    Drosophila melanogaster mutant tan

    Drosophila melanogaster gene tan was originally discovered in the early 20th century as a mutant strain lacking the dark pi gment pattern of wild-type (wt) f lies and, therefore, showing a light yellowish brown color (McEwen, 1918). Flies lack ing Tan function also exhibited abnormalities in vision (Benzer, 1967; Inoue et al. , 1988; True et al. , 2005), and tan males displayed an abnormal courtship behavior (Cook, 1980; Tomkins et al. , 1982). tan 1 ( t 1 ) and tan 3 ( t 3 ) alleles were found as spontaneous mutations, t 3 mutant being apparently lighter than t 1 (Brehme, 1941). tan is the structural gene for N- β -alanyldopamine hydrolase (NBAD-hydrolase or Tan protein), the enzyme that generates dopamine (DA) from NBAD (Wright, 1987; True et al. , 2005). Tan is expressed as a precursor protein of 43.7 kDa. Th is precursor is clea ved into two subunits of 29.9 and 13.8 kDa that apparently conform together a he terodimeric active protein (Wagner et al. , 2007). The enzyme that generates NBAD from DA, th e opposite reaction to the one catalyzed by Tan, is the NBAD-synthase or E bony protein (Wright, 1987; Pérez et al ., 1997), which is codified by the gene ebony . Since both Tan and Ebony ar e involved in cuticle tanni ng, carcinine re gulation, and NBAD metabolism in nervous tissue (Wright, 1987; Pérez et al. , 1997, 2004; Hovemann et al. , 1998; Borycz et al. , 2002; True et al. , 2005), it has been suggested that they function together in a system regulating the levels of dopamine during cuticle sclerotization a nd histamine in the visual metabolism (Borycz et al. , 2002; Pérez et al. , 2010). During the last few years, several publicati ons appeared regarding NBAD-synthase (Wappner et al ., 1996a, b; Pérez et al ., 1997, 2002, 2004, 2010; Hovemann et al. , 1998; Borycz et al. , 2002; Wittkopp et al., 2002; Schachter et al ., 2007), but very little is known about tan (True et al. , 2005; Wagner et al. , 2007).     Grand Unification Scale CP Violating Phases And The Electric Dipole Moment

    The question of CP violating phases in supersymmetry and electric dipole moments (EDMs) is considered within the framework of supergravity grand unification (GUT) models with a light (<\stackrel{<}{\sim}1 TeV) mass spectrum. In the minimal model, the nearness of the t-quark Landau pole automatically suppresses the t-quark cubic soft breaking phase at the electroweak scale. However, current EDM data require the quadratic soft breaking phase to be small at the electroweak scale unless tanβ\beta is small (tanβ<\beta\stackrel{<}{\sim}3), and the EDM data combined with the requirement of electroweak symmetry breaking require this phase to be both large and highly fine tuned at the GUT scale unless tanβ\beta is small. Non minimal models are also examined, and generally show the same behavior.Comment: 28 pages, latex, 15 figure

    Ammonia emissions from livestock production in Chile: an inventory and uncertainty analysis

    Indexación: Web of Science; Scielo.The objective of this work was to quantify the country's NH3 emissions from livestock production. This calculation was based on the mass flow of total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN). The analysis was performed for all 15 geographical regions in Chile. The definition of livestock subcategories was based on data from the Chilean Agriculture and Forestry Census as well as technical reports published by the Chilean National Statistics Institute. Significant differences were observed among the sources of livestock emissions in Chile's regions, and there was high variability depending on the degree of livestock confinement. In 2013, the total calculated emissions were 69.1 kt NH3/year (± 31.1). The O’Higgins Region had the highest NH3 emissions in Chile, representing 45% of the total. In terms of livestock production, 45% of the emissions were generated by pigs, 22% by poultry, 16% by cattle, 11% by equines and 4% by sheep. Emissions from the TAN that was available during manure and slurry management and the degree of animal confinement were the primary sources of uncertainty. This uncertainty could be greatly reduced by developing regional emission factors and by including the degree of animal confinement in Chile's national statistics such as the Agriculture, Livestock and Forestry Census.http://www.scielo.cl/scielo.php?pid=S0718-95162016005000005&script=sci_abstrac

    Strain-induced quantum dots by self-organized stressors

    Novel in situ method to produce quantum dots is reported. Three‐dimensional confinement of carriers to a GaInAs/GaAs quantum welldots is observed by photoluminescence. The confinement potential is induced by stressors, formed by self‐organizing growth of InP nanoscale islands on top barrier GaAssurface. Two transitions arising from the strain‐induced quantum dots produced by two types of InP islands are identified. The luminescence from higher electronic states of the quantum dots having a level splitting of 8 meV is also observed.Peer reviewe
