Theoretical Aspects of Charge Correlations in -(BEDT-TTF)
A review is given on the theoretical studies of charge correlations in
-(BEDT-TTF). Various studies show that within a purely electronic
model on the -type lattice with the on-site and the nearest
neighbor and interactions, the diagonal stripe, c-axis three-fold,
and the vertical stripe charge correlations are favored in the regime , , and , respectively. In the realistic parameter
regime of , there is a competition between c-axis three fold state
and the diagonal stripe state. Since these are different from the
experimentally observed a-axis three fold and the horizontal stripe charge
correlations, additional effects have to be included in order to understand the
experiments. The electron-lattice coupling, which tends to distort the lattice
into the -type, is found to favor the horizontal stripe state,
suggesting that the occurrence of this stripe ordering in the actual materials
may not be of purely electronic origin. On the other hand, distant
electron-electron interactions have to be considered in order to understand the
a-axis three fold correlation, whose wave vector is close to the nesting vector
of the Fermi surface. These studies seem to suggest that the minimal model to
understand the charge correlation in -(BEDT-TTF) may be more
complicated than expected. Future problems regarding the competition between

Ionic Conductivities of Molten CuI and AgI-CuI Mixtures
Ionic conductivities σ for molten CuI and AgI-CuI mixtures were measured in the temperature ranges of approximately 580-800 and 500-850 °C, respectively. The value of σ for molten CuI in the range is smaller than that for molten CuBr and CuCl. σ for molten AgI-CuI mixtures decreases with increasing CuI-concentration. The activation energies Ea for molten AgI-CuI system were determined from the analysis of temperature dependence of σ by using the by Arrhenius type equation. Ea for molten AgI-CuI gradually increase with increasing CuIconcentration
Variational Monte Carlo Study of the Kondo Necklace Model with Geometrical Frustration
We investigate the ground state of the Kondo necklace model on
geometrically-frustrated lattices by the variational Monte Carlo simulation. To
explore the possibility of a partially-ordered phase, we employ an extension of
the Yosida-type wave function as a variational state, which can describe a
coexistence of spin-singlet formation due to the Kondo coupling and magnetic
ordering by the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction. We show the
benchmark of the numerical simulation to demonstrate the high precision brought
by the optimization of a large number of variational parameters. We discuss the
ground-state phase diagram for the model on the kagome lattice in comparison

Layer-specific morphological and molecular differences in neocortical astrocytes and their dependence on neuronal layers
Non-pial neocortical astrocytes have historically been thought to comprise largely a nondiverse population of protoplasmic astrocytes. Here we show that astrocytes of the mouse somatosensory cortex manifest layer-specific morphological and molecular differences. Two- and three-dimensional observations revealed that astrocytes in the different layers possess distinct morphologies as reflected by differences in cell orientation, territorial volume, and arborization. The extent of ensheathment of synaptic clefts by astrocytes in layer II/III was greater than that by those in layer VI. Moreover, differences in gene expression were observed between upper-layer and deep-layer astrocytes. Importantly, layer-specific differences in astrocyte properties were abrogated in reeler and Dab1 conditional knockout mice, in which neuronal layers are disturbed, suggesting that neuronal layers are a prerequisite for the observed morphological and molecular differences of neocortical astrocytes. This study thus demonstrates the existence of layer-specific interactions between neurons and astrocytes, which may underlie their layer-specific functions
Clear sky fraction above Indonesia: an analysis for astronomical site selection
We report a study of cloud cover over Indonesia based on meteorological
satellite data, spanning over the past 15 years (from 1996 to 2010) in order to
be able to select a new astronomical site capable to host a multi-wavelength
astronomical observatory. High spatial resolution of meteorological satellite
data acquired from {\it Geostationary Meteorological Satellite 5} ({\it GMS
5}), {\it Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 9} ({\it GOES 9}),
and {\it Multi-functional Transport Satellite-1R} ({\it MTSAT-1R}) are used to
derive yearly average clear fractions over the regions of Indonesia. This
parameter is determined from temperature measurement of the IR3 channel (water
vapor, 6.7 m) for high altitude clouds (cirrus) and from the IR1 channel
(10.7 m) for lower altitude clouds. Accordingly, an algorithm is developed
to detect the corresponding clouds. The results of this study are then adopted
to select the best possible sites in Indonesia to be analysed further by
performing in situ measurements planned for the coming years. The results
suggest that regions of East Nusa Tenggara, located in south-eastern part of
Indonesia, are the most promising candidates for such an astronomical site.
Yearly clear sky fraction of this regions may reach better than 70 per cent

Effects of Long-Range Correlations on Nonmagnetic Mott Transitions in Hubbard model on Square Lattice
The mechanism of Mott transition in the Hubbard model on the square lattice
is studied without explicit introduction of magnetic and superconducting
correlations, using a variational Monte Carlo method. In the trial wave
functions, we consider various types of binding factors between a
doubly-occupied site (doublon, D) and an empty site (holon, H), like a
long-range type as well as a conventional nearest-neighbor type, and add
independent long-range D-D (H-H) factors. It is found that a wide choice of D-H
binding factor leads to Mott transitions at critical values near the band
width. We renew the D-H binding picture of Mott transitions by introducing two
characteristic length scales, the D-H binding length l_{DH} and the minimum D-D
distance l_{DD}, which we appropriately estimate. A Mott transition takes place
at l_{DH}=l_{DD}. In the metallic regime (l_{DH}>l_{DD}), the domains of D-H
pairs overlap with one another, thereby doublons and holons can move
independently by exchanging the partners one after another. In contrast, the

Effect of Doublon-Holon Binding on Mott transition---Variational Monte Carlo Study of Two-Dimensional Bose Hubbard Models
To understand the mechanism of Mott transitions in case of no magnetic
influence, superfluid-insulator (Mott) transitions in the S=0 Bose Hubbard
model at unit filling are studied on the square and triangular lattices, using
a variational Monte Carlo method. In trial many-body wave functions, we
introduce various types of attractive correlation factors between a
doubly-occupied site (doublon, D) and an empty site (holon, H), which play a
central role for Mott transitions, in addition to the onsite repulsive
(Gutzwiller) factor. By optimizing distance-dependent parameters, we study
various properties of this type of wave functions. With a hint from the Mott
transition arising in a completely D-H bound state, we propose an improved
picture of Mott transitions, by introducing two characteristic length scales,
the D-H binding length and the minimum D-D exclusion length
. Generally, a Mott transition occurs when becomes
comparable to . In the conductive (superfluid) state, domains of
D-H pairs overlap with each other (); thereby D and
H can propagate independently as density carriers by successively exchanging
the partners. In contrast, intersite repulsive Jastrow (D-D and H-H) factors

Structure and Ionic Diffusion in Molten NaI, RbI, and NaI-RbI mixture
Static structure factors of molten NaI, RbI, and their mixture of (RbI)0.3(NaI)0.7 are measured up to high-Q region by using the high-energy Xray diffraction technique. Moreover, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are carried out, and the simulation results well reproduce the diffraction data. The partial structure factors, partial pair distribution functions, and ionic diffusion coefficients calculated by the MD simulations are reported in detail. The mixing effects of cations on the structure and ionic diffusion are also discussed
Efficient generation of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)-pseudotypes bearing morbilliviral glycoproteins and their use in quantifying virus neutralising antibodies
Morbillivirus neutralising antibodies are traditionally measured using either plaque reduction neutralisation tests (PRNTs) or live virus microneutralisation tests (micro-NTs). While both test formats provide a reliable assessment of the strength and specificity of the humoral response, they are restricted by the limited number of viral strains that can be studied and often present significant biological safety concerns to the operator. In this study, we describe the adaptation of a replication-defective vesicular stomatitis virus (VSVΔG) based pseudotyping system for the measurement of morbillivirus neutralising antibodies. By expressing the haemagglutinin (H) and fusion (F) proteins of canine distemper virus (CDV) on VSVΔG pseudotypes bearing a luciferase marker gene, neutralising antibody titres could be measured rapidly and with high sensitivity. Further, by exchanging the glycoprotein expression construct, responses against distinct viral strains or species may be measured. Using this technique, we demonstrate cross neutralisation between CDV and peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV). As an example of the value of the technique, we demonstrate that UK dogs vary in the breadth of immunity induced by CDV vaccination; in some dogs the neutralising response is CDV-specific while, in others, the neutralising response extends to the ruminant morbillivirus PPRV. This technique will facilitate a comprehensive comparison of cross-neutralisation to be conducted across the morbilliviruses

Antitumor Activity of Pembrolizumab in Biomarker-Unselected Patients With Recurrent and/or Metastatic Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Results From the Phase Ib KEYNOTE-012 Expansion Cohort.
Purpose Treatment with pembrolizumab, an anti-programmed death-1 antibody, at 10 mg/kg administered once every 2 weeks, displayed durable antitumor activity in programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) -positive recurrent and/or metastatic (R/M) head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in the KEYNOTE-012 trial. Results from the expansion cohort, in which patients with HNSCC, irrespective of biomarker status, received a fixed dose of pembrolizumab at a less frequent dosing schedule, are reported. Patients and Methods Patients with R/M HNSCC, irrespective of PD-L1 or human papillomavirus status, received pembrolizumab 200 mg intravenously once every 3 weeks. Imaging was performed every 8 weeks. Primary end points were overall response rate (ORR) per central imaging vendor (Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors v1.1) and safety. Secondary end points included progression-free survival, overall survival, and association of response and PD-L1 expression. Patients who received one or more doses of pembrolizumab were included in analyses. Results Of 132 patients enrolled, median age was 60 years (range, 25 to 84 years), 83% were male, and 57% received two or more lines of therapy for R/M disease. ORR was 18% (95% CI, 12 to 26) by central imaging vendor and 20% (95% CI, 13 to 28) by investigator review. Median duration of response was not reached (range, ≥ 2 to ≥ 11 months). Six-month progression-free survival and overall survival rates were 23% and 59%, respectively. By using tumor and immune cells, a statistically significant increase in ORR was observed for PD-L1-positive versus -negative patients (22% v 4%; P = .021). Treatment-related adverse events of any grade and grade ≥ 3 events occurred in 62% and 9% of patients, respectively. Conclusion Fixed-dose pembrolizumab 200 mg administered once every 3 weeks was well tolerated and yielded a clinically meaningful ORR with evidence of durable responses, which supports further development of this regimen in patients with advanced HNSCC
