    We have investigated light scattering from polaritons and plasmaritons in CdS near resonance. These results are compared with computer-calculated dispersion curves for these excitations. We find a good agreement between theory and experiments.     Performance of formulae based estimates of glomerular filtration rate for carboplatin dosing in stage 1 seminoma

    <b>Background:</b> Single cycle carboplatin, dosed by glomerular filtration rate (GFR), is standard adjuvant therapy for stage 1 seminoma. Accurate measurement of GFR is essential for correct dosing. Isotopic methods remain the gold standard for the determination of GFR. Formulae to estimate GFR have improved the assessment of renal function in non-oncological settings. We assessed the utility of these formulae for carboplatin dosing.<p></p> <b>Methods:</b> We studied consecutive subjects receiving adjuvant carboplatin for stage 1 seminoma at our institution between 2007 and 2012. Subjects underwent 51Cr-ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) measurement of GFR with carboplatin dose calculated using the Calvert formula. Theoretical carboplatin doses were calculated from estimated GFR using Chronic Kidney Disease-Epidemiology (CKD-EPI), Management of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) and Cockcroft–Gault (CG) formulae with additional correction for actual body surface area (BSA). Carboplatin doses calculated by formulae were compared with dose calculated by isotopic GFR; a difference <10% was considered acceptable.<p></p> <b>Results:</b> 115 patients were identified. Mean isotopic GFR was 96.9 ml/min/1.73 m2. CG and CKD-EPI tended to overestimate GFR whereas MDRD tended to underestimate GFR. The CKD-EPI formula had greatest accuracy. The CKD-EPI formula, corrected for actual BSA, performed best; 45.9% of patients received within 10% of correct carboplatin dose. Patients predicted as underdosed (13.5%) by CKD-EPI were more likely to be obese (p = 0.013); there were no predictors of the 40.5% receiving an excess dose.<p></p> <b>Conclusions:</b> Our data support further evaluation of the CKD-EPI formula in this patient population but clinically significant variances in carboplatin dosing occur using non-isotopic methods of GFR estimation. Isotopic determination of GFR should remain the recommended standard for carboplatin dosing when accuracy is essential.<p></p&gt

    Distributed Approximation of Minimum Routing Cost Trees

    We study the NP-hard problem of approximating a Minimum Routing Cost Spanning Tree in the message passing model with limited bandwidth (CONGEST model). In this problem one tries to find a spanning tree of a graph GG over nn nodes that minimizes the sum of distances between all pairs of nodes. In the considered model every node can transmit a different (but short) message to each of its neighbors in each synchronous round. We provide a randomized (2+ϵ)(2+\epsilon)-approximation with runtime O(D+lognϵ)O(D+\frac{\log n}{\epsilon}) for unweighted graphs. Here, DD is the diameter of GG. This improves over both, the (expected) approximation factor O(logn)O(\log n) and the runtime O(Dlog2n)O(D\log^2 n) of the best previously known algorithm. Due to stating our results in a very general way, we also derive an (optimal) runtime of O(D)O(D) when considering O(logn)O(\log n)-approximations as done by the best previously known algorithm.     The niche construction perspective: A critical appraisal

    Niche construction refers to the activities of organisms that bring about changes in their environments, many of which are evolutionarily and ecologically consequential. Advocates of niche construction theory (NCT) believe that standard evolutionary theory fails to recognize the full importance of niche construction, and consequently propose a novel view of evolution, in which niche construction and its legacy over time (ecological inheritance) are described as evolutionary processes, equivalent in importance to natural selection. Here, we subject NCT to critical evaluation, in the form of a collaboration between one prominent advocate of NCT, and a team of skeptics. We discuss whether niche construction is an evolutionary process, whether NCT obscures or clarifies how natural selection leads to organismal adaptation, and whether niche construction and natural selection are of equivalent explanatory importance. We also consider whether the literature that promotes NCT overstates the significance of niche construction, whether it is internally coherent, and whether it accurately portrays standard evolutionary theory. Our disagreements reflect a wider dispute within evolutionary theory over whether the neo-Darwinian synthesis is in need of reformulation, as well as different usages of some key terms (e.g. evolutionary process)

    Imperfect Detectors in Linear Optical Quantum Computers

    We discuss the effects of imperfect photon detectors suffering from loss and noise on the reliability of linear optical quantum computers. We show that for a given detector efficiency, there is a maximum achievable success probability, and that increasing the number of ancillary photons and detectors used for one controlled sign flip gate beyond a critical point will decrease the probability that the computer will function correctly. We have also performed simulations of some small logic gates and estimate the efficiency and noise levels required for the linear optical quantum computer to function properly.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

    Highly perturbed molecular gas in infalling cluster galaxies : the case of CGCG97-079

    Date of Acceptance: 14/07/2015We report on CO (J = 2 → 1) mapping with the IRAM 30-m HEtrodyne Receiver Array (HERA) of CGCG 97-079, an irregular galaxy in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 1367 (z = 0.022). We find that ˜80 per cent of the detected CO (J = 2 → 1) is projected within a 16 arcsec2 (6.5 kpc2) region to the north and west of the optical/NIR centre, with the intensity maximum offset ˜10 arcsec (4 kpc) NW of the optical/NIR centre and ˜7 arcsec (3 kpc) south-east of the H I intensity maximum. Evolutionary synthesis models indicate CGCG 97-079 experienced a burst of star formation ˜108 yr ago, most likely triggered by a tidal interaction with CGCG 97-073. For CGCG 97-079 we deduce an infall velocity to the cluster of ˜1000 km s-1 and moderate ram pressure (Pram ≈ 10-11 dyne cm-2). The observed offset in CGCG 97-079 of the highest density H I and CO (J = 2 → 1) from the stellar components has not previously been observed in galaxies currently undergoing ram pressure stripping, although previous detailed studies of gas morphology and kinematics during ram pressure stripping were restricted to significantly more massive galaxies with deeper gravitational potential wells. We conclude the observed cold gas density maxima offsets are most likely the result of ram pressure and/or the high-speed tidal interaction with CGCG 97-073. However ram pressure stripping is likely to be playing a major role in the perturbation of lower density gas.Peer reviewe

    Approximating the inspiral of test bodies into Kerr black holes

    We present a new approximate method for constructing gravitational radiation driven inspirals of test-bodies orbiting Kerr black holes. Such orbits can be fully described by a semi-latus rectum pp, an eccentricity ee, and an inclination angle ι\iota; or, by an energy EE, an angular momentum component LzL_z, and a third constant QQ. Our scheme uses expressions that are exact (within an adiabatic approximation) for the rates of change (p˙\dot{p}, e˙\dot{e}, ι˙\dot{\iota}) as linear combinations of the fluxes (E˙\dot{E}, Lz˙\dot{L_z}, Q˙\dot{Q}), but uses quadrupole-order formulae for these fluxes. This scheme thus encodes the exact orbital dynamics, augmenting it with approximate radiation reaction. Comparing inspiral trajectories, we find that this approximation agrees well with numerical results for the special cases of eccentric equatorial and circular inclined orbits, far more accurate than corresponding weak-field formulae for (p˙\dot{p}, e˙\dot{e}, ι˙\dot{\iota}). We use this technique to study the inspiral of a test-body in inclined, eccentric Kerr orbits. Our results should be useful tools for constructing approximate waveforms that can be used to study data analysis problems for the future LISA gravitational-wave observatory, in lieu of waveforms from more rigorous techniques that are currently under development.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR

    Exact two-particle eigenstates in partially reduced QED

    We consider a reformulation of QED in which covariant Green functions are used to solve for the electromagnetic field in terms of the fermion fields. It is shown that exact few-fermion eigenstates of the resulting Hamiltonian can be obtained in the canonical equal-time formalism for the case where there are no free photons. These eigenstates lead to two- and three-body Dirac-like equations with electromagnetic interactions.
