    Adaptive Lattice Algorithms for Passive Array Data

    This paper reports the development of an algorithm for the processing of data from an array of broad-band sensors using lattice type processor. The problem is to enhance the look-direction signal in the presence of spatially distributed interference sources and sensor self noise by employing a multi-channel processor subject to the constraint that it has a desired response for look-direction signals. The multichannel lattice algorithm proposed here possess stage by stage decoupling, and do not involve an arbitrary size of the step length, unlike conventional tapped-delay-line algorithms

    Delaunay graph mapping based mesh deformation for simulation of a spanwise rigid and flexible flapping NACA0012 wing using DES with parallel implementation

    A flapping NACA0012 wing with spanwise rigid and flexible configurations is simulated using the Delaunay graph mapping based mesh deformation technique. This mesh deformation scheme is quite efficient and gives a good alternate to the spring analogy due to its non-iterative nature and simple implementation. It is also well suited for the parallel implementation due to its preservation of the original mesh topology. The preliminary simulated case is spanwise rigid at Garrick frequency of 1.82 and Reynolds number 30,000, corresponding to the experimental data by Heathcote et. al [AIAA- 2006-2870]. The results obtained for this case are in a good agreement with the experimental data for the instantaneous thrust. The simulation also predicts the lag in flapping motion cycle and generated thrust due to the dynamic effects of the flapping cycle and a corresponding phase lag is depicted in the thrust during the flapping cycle.     CAKE (Cosmic Abundances below Knee Energies) was a prototype balloon experiment for the determination of the charge spectra and of abundances of the primary cosmic-rays (CR) with Z>>10. It was a passive instrument made of layers of CR39 and Lexan nuclear track detectors; it had a geometric acceptance of ∼\sim0.7 m2^2sr for Fe nuclei. Here, the scanning and analysis strategies, the algorithms used for the off-line filtering and for the tracking in automated mode of the primary cosmic rays are presented, together with the resulting CR charge distribution and their abundances.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figure

    A bovine lymphosarcoma cell line infected with theileria annulata exhibits an irreversible reconfiguration of host cell gene expression

    Theileria annulata, an intracellular parasite of bovine lymphoid cells, induces substantial phenotypic alterations to its host cell including continuous proliferation, cytoskeletal changes and resistance to apoptosis. While parasite induced modulation of host cell signal transduction pathways and NFκB activation are established, there remains considerable speculation on the complexities of the parasite directed control mechanisms that govern these radical changes to the host cell. Our objectives in this study were to provide a comprehensive analysis of the global changes to host cell gene expression with emphasis on those that result from direct intervention by the parasite. By using comparative microarray analysis of an uninfected bovine cell line and its Theileria infected counterpart, in conjunction with use of the specific parasitacidal agent, buparvaquone, we have identified a large number of host cell gene expression changes that result from parasite infection. Our results indicate that the viable parasite can irreversibly modify the transformed phenotype of a bovine cell line. Fifty percent of genes with altered expression failed to show a reversible response to parasite death, a possible contributing factor to initiation of host cell apoptosis. The genes that did show an early predicted response to loss of parasite viability highlighted a sub-group of genes that are likely to be under direct control by parasite infection. Network and pathway analysis demonstrated that this sub-group is significantly enriched for genes involved in regulation of chromatin modification and gene expression. The results provide evidence that the Theileria parasite has the regulatory capacity to generate widespread change to host cell gene expression in a complex and largely irreversible manner

    Hadamard upper bound on optimum joint decoding capacity of Wyner Gaussian cellular MAC

    This article presents an original analytical expression for an upper bound on the optimum joint decoding capacity of Wyner circular Gaussian cellular multiple access channel (C-GCMAC) for uniformly distributed mobile terminals (MTs). This upper bound is referred to as Hadamard upper bound (HUB) and is a novel application of the Hadamard inequality established by exploiting the Hadamard operation between the channel fading matrix G and the channel path gain matrix Ω. This article demonstrates that the actual capacity converges to the theoretical upper bound under the constraints like low signal-to-noise ratios and limiting channel path gain among the MTs and the respective base station of interest. In order to determine the usefulness of the HUB, the behavior of the theoretical upper bound is critically observed specially when the inter-cell and the intra-cell time sharing schemes are employed. In this context, we derive an analytical form of HUB by employing an approximation approach based on the estimation of probability density function of trace of Hadamard product of two matrices, i.e., G and Ω. A closed form of expression has been derived to capture the effect of the MT distribution on the optimum joint decoding capacity of C-GCMAC. This article demonstrates that the analytical HUB based on the proposed approximation approach converges to the theoretical upper bound results in the medium to high signal to noise ratio regime and shows a reasonably tighter bound on optimum joint decoding capacity of Wyner GCMAC

    The clinical features of the piriformis syndrome: a systematic review

    Piriformis syndrome, sciatica caused by compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle, has been described for over 70 years; yet, it remains controversial. The literature consists mainly of case series and narrative reviews. The objectives of the study were: first, to make the best use of existing evidence to estimate the frequencies of clinical features in patients reported to have PS; second, to identify future research questions. A systematic review was conducted of any study type that reported extractable data relevant to diagnosis. The search included all studies up to 1 March 2008 in four databases: AMED, CINAHL, Embase and Medline. Screening, data extraction and analysis were all performed independently by two reviewers. A total of 55 studies were included: 51 individual and 3 aggregated data studies, and 1 combined study. The most common features found were: buttock pain, external tenderness over the greater sciatic notch, aggravation of the pain through sitting and augmentation of the pain with manoeuvres that increase piriformis muscle tension. Future research could start with comparing the frequencies of these features in sciatica patients with and without disc herniation or spinal stenosis

    Macular sensitivity and fixation patterns in normal eyes and eyes with uveitis with and without macular edema

    PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the relationship between macular sensitivity and thickness in eyes with uveitic macular edema (UME). DESIGN: This study is a prospective observational case series. METHODS: The setting for this study was clinical practice. The study included 59 (28 with UME, 31 without UME) eyes of 26 patients with uveitis and 19 eyes of 10 normal subjects. The procedure followed was fundus-related perimetry and retinal thickness map with an automated fundus perimetry/tomography system. Main outcome measures included quantification of macular sensitivity, fixation pattern, and relationship between macular sensitivity and thickness. RESULTS: Fixation stability revealed that 56 eyes (93.44%) had stable fixation (\u3e75% within the central 2° of point of fixation); three eyes (6.56%) were relatively unstable (75% located within 4°); and no eye had unstable fixation (50% of fixation point within 0.5 mm of foveal center); seven eyes (11.86%) had peri-central fixation location (25% \u3c 50% within 0.5 mm); and seven eyes (11.86%) had eccentric (280 μm. CONCLUSIONS: Perimetry quantification of macular sensitivity and retinal thickness, in association with other factors, may offer novel information regarding the impact of UME on retinal function
