    Price competition with consumer confusion

Article posted with permission.This paper proposes a model in which identical sellers of a homogeneous product compete in both prices and price frames (i.e., ways to present price information). Frame choices affect the comparability of price offers and may cause consumer confusion and lower price sensitivity. In equilibrium, firms randomize their frame choices to obfuscate price comparisons and sustain positive profits. The nature of the equilibrium depends on whether frame differentiation or frame complexity is more confusing. Moreover, an increase in the number of competitors induces firms to rely more on frame complexity, and this may boost industry profits and lower consumer surplus

    Objective: To investigate possible short-term effects of voluntary weight loss on ovarian steroid proļ¬les in young women, in light of better established long-term effects in older women. Design: We tested for an association of voluntary weight change over the course of a menstrual cycle with salivary E2 and P proļ¬les in the same menstrual cycle. Setting: Students were recruited in a college residence hall, and they provided daily saliva samples to a researcher living nearby. Patient(s): The 65 women who participated were all college students and ranged in age between 18 and 23 years. Intervention(s): None. Main Outcome Measure(s): Weight was assessed in the ļ¬rst week of the menstrual cycle and ļ¬rst week of the following menstrual cycle. Estradiol and P were measured by radioimmunoassay in daily saliva samples. Result(s): We did not detect a suppressive effect of weight loss on the overall level of either hormone. However, we did ļ¬nd evidence for more distinct follicular and luteal E2 peaks in women who gained weight. Peak luteal P also arrived about 2 days earlier in women who gained weight. Conclusion(s): This ļ¬nding adds to evidence that short-term response of ovarian function to weight loss in young women is less pronounced than long-term response in older women.AnthropologyHuman Evolutionary Biolog

    Diffusion due to the Beam-Beam Interaction and Fluctuating Fields in Hadron Colliders

    Random fluctuations in the tune, beam offsets and beam size in the presence of the beam-beam interaction are shown to lead to significant particle diffusion and emittance growth in hadron colliders. We find that far from resonances high frequency noise causes the most diffusion while near resonances low frequency noise is responsible for the large emittance growth observed. Comparison of different fluctuations shows that offset fluctuations between the beams causes the largest diffusion for particles in the beam core.Comment: 5 pages, 3 postscript figure

    Expected gamma-ray emission of supernova remnant SN 1987A

    A nonlinear kinetic theory of cosmic ray (CR) acceleration in supernova remnants is employed to re-examine the nonthermal properties of the remnant of SN 1987A for an extended evolutionary period of 5--100 yr. It is shown that an efficient production of nuclear CRs leads to a strong modification of the outer supernova remnant shock and to a large downstream magnetic field Bdā‰ˆ20B_\mathrm{d}\approx 20 mG. The shock modification and the strong field are required to yield the steep radio emission spectrum observed, as well as to considerable synchrotron cooling of high energy electrons which diminishes their X-ray synchrotron flux. These features are also consistent with the existing X-ray observations. The expected \gr energy flux at TeV-energies at the current epoch is nearly ĻµĪ³FĪ³ā‰ˆ4Ɨ10āˆ’13\epsilon_{\gamma}F_{\gamma}\approx 4\times 10^{-13} erg cm2^2sāˆ’1^{-1} under reasonable assumptions about the overall magnetic field topology and the turbulent perturbations of this field.     Positron lifetime spectroscopy was used to study native vacancy defects in semi-insulating silicon carbide. The material is shown to contain (i) vacancy clusters consisting of 4--5 missing atoms and (ii) Si vacancy related negatively charged defects. The total open volume bound to the clusters anticorrelates with the electrical resistivity both in as-grown and annealed material. Our results suggest that Si vacancy related complexes compensate electrically the as-grown material, but migrate to increase the size of the clusters during annealing, leading to loss of resistivity.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Many Roads to Synchrony: Natural Time Scales and Their Algorithms

    We consider two important time scales---the Markov and cryptic orders---that monitor how an observer synchronizes to a finitary stochastic process. We show how to compute these orders exactly and that they are most efficiently calculated from the epsilon-machine, a process's minimal unifilar model. Surprisingly, though the Markov order is a basic concept from stochastic process theory, it is not a probabilistic property of a process. Rather, it is a topological property and, moreover, it is not computable from any finite-state model other than the epsilon-machine. Via an exhaustive survey, we close by demonstrating that infinite Markov and infinite cryptic orders are a dominant feature in the space of finite-memory processes.     Application and Analysis of Bounded-Impulse Trajectory Models with Analytic Gradients

    In the companion paper, analytic methods were presented for computing the Jacobian entries for two-sided direct shooting trajectory models that utilize the bounded-impulse approximation. In this paper we discuss practical implementation considerations. Efficient computation of the mathematical components required to compute the partials is discussed and a guiding numerical example is provided for validation purposes. A solar electric power model suitable for preliminary mission design is presented, including a method for handling thruster cut-off events that result in non-smooth derivatives. The challenges associated with incorporating the SPICE ephemeris system into an optimization framework are discussed and an alternative is presented that results in smooth time partials. Application problems illustrate the benefits of employing analytic Jacobian calculations vs. using the method of finite differences. The importance of accurately modeling hardware and operational constraints at the preliminary design stage, and the benefits of using an analytic Jacobian in a solver that combines the monotonic basin hopping heuristic method with a local gradient search are also explored

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.WNK kinases, along with their upstream regulators (CUL3/KLHL3) and downstream targets (the SPAK/OSR1 kinases and the cation-Cl- cotransporters [CCCs]), comprise a signaling cascade essential for ion homeostasis in the kidney and nervous system.
