Gap Equations and Electroweak Symmetry Breaking
Recently a new dynamical symmetry breaking model of electroweak interactions
was proposed based on interacting fermions. Two fermions of different SU(2)
representations form a symmetry breaking condensate and generate the lepton and
quark masses. The weak gauge bosons get their usual standard model masses from
a gauge invariant Lagrangian of a composite doublet scalar field. The new
fermion fields become massive by condensation. In this note the gap equations
are given in the linearized (mean field) approximation and the conditions for
symmetry breaking and mass generation are presented. Perturbative unitarity
constrains the self-couplings and the masses of the new fermions, a raw
spectrum is given.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Signaling via PI3K/FOXO1A pathway modulates formation and survival of human embryonic stem cell-derived endothelial cells
Vascular derivatives of human embryonic stem cells (hESC) are being developed as sources of tissue-specific cells for organ regeneration. However, identity of developmental pathways that modulate the specification of endothelial cells is not known yet. We studied phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-Forkhead box O transcription factor 1A (FOXO1A) pathways during differentiation of hESC toward endothelial lineage and on proliferation, maturation, and cell death of hESC-derived endothelial cells (hESC-EC). During differentiation of hESC, expression of FOXO1A transcription factor was linked to the expression of a cluster of angiogenesis- and vascular remodeling-related genes. PI3K inhibitor LY294002 activated FOXO1A and induced formation of CD31(+) hESC-EC. In contrast, differentiating hESC with silenced FOXO1A by small interfering RNA (siRNA) showed lower mRNA levels of CD31 and angiopoietin2. LY294002 decreased proliferative activity of purified hESC-EC, while FOXO1A siRNA increased their proliferation. LY294002 inhibits migration and tube formation of hESC-EC; in contrast, FOXO1A siRNA increased in vitro tube formation activity of hESC-EC. After in vivo conditioning of cells in athymic nude rats, cells retain their low FOXO1A expression levels. PI3K/FOXO1A pathway is important for function and survival of hESC-EC and in the regulation of endothelial cell fate. Understanding these properties of hESC-EC may help in future applications for treatment of injured organs
Steppe woodlands with Tatarian Maple (Aceri tatarici-Quercetum pubescentis-roboris) on the great Hungarian plain and its neighbourhood. An unfinished synthesis with supplementary notes
This paper presents the so far only partially published research material of the late Bálint Zólyomi on one of his major fields of interest, the forest steppe vegetation. The phytosociological tables presented here were found in his bequest indicating that he was going to publish a grand synthesis on this topic, which, however, has not come true. Since no written text accompanied the original tables, a historical overview and a short explanation to the tables are also provided
Fundamentals of interface phenomena in advanced bulk nanoscale materials
The review is devoted to a study of interface phenomena influencing advanced properties of nanoscale materials processed by means of severe plastic deformation, high-energy ball milling and their combinations. Interface phenomena include processes of interface defect structure relaxation from a highly nonequilibrium state to an equilibrium condition, grain boundary phase transformations and enhanced grain boundary and triple junction diffusivity. On the basis of an experimental investigation, a theoretical description of the key interfacial phenomena controlling the functional properties of advanced bulk nanoscale materials has been conducted. An interface defect structure investigation has been performed by TEM, high-resolution x-ray diffraction, atomic simulation and modeling. The problem of a transition from highly non-equilibrium state to an equilibrium one, which seems to be responsible for low thermostability of nanoscale materials, was studied. Also enhanced grain boundary diffusivity is addressed. Structure recovery and dislocation emission from grain boundaries in nanocrystalline materials have been investigated by analytical methods and modeling
Effects of Extra Dimensions on Unitarity and Higgs Boson Mass
We study the unitarity constraint on the two body Higgs boson elastic
scattering in the presence of extra dimensions. The contributions from exchange
of spin-2 and spin-0 Kaluza-Klein states can have large effect on the partial
wave amplitude. Unitarity condition restrict the maximal allowed value for the
ratio of the center of mass energy to the gravity scale to be less than
one. Although the constraint on the standard Higgs boson mass for of order
one is considerably relaxed, for small the constraint is similar to that in
the Standard Model. The resulting bound on the Higgs boson mass is not
dramatically altered if perturbative calculations are required to be valid up
to the maximal allowed value for .Comment: References added, RevTex, 9 pages with two figure
Prolactin stress response does not predict brood desertion in a polyandrous shorebird
One of the fundamental principles of the life-history theory is that parents need to balance their resources between current and future offspring. Deserting the dependent young is a radical life-history decision that saves resources for future reproduction but that may cause the current brood to fail. Despite the importance of desertion for reproductive success, and thus fitness, the neuroendocrine mechanisms of brood desertion are largely unknown. We investigated two candidate hormones that may influence brood desertion in the Kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus: prolactin ('parental hormone') and corticosterone ('stress hormone'). Kentish plovers exhibit an unusually diverse mating and parental care system: brood desertion occurs naturally since either parent (the male or the female) may desert the brood after the chicks hatch and mate with a new partner shortly after. We measured the hormone levels of parents at hatching using the standard capture and restraint protocol. We subsequently followed the broods to determine whether a parent deserted the chicks. We found no evidence that either baseline or stress-induced prolactin levels of male or female parents predicted brood desertion. Although stress-induced corticosterone levels were generally higher in females compared with males, individual corticosterone levels did not explain the probability of brood desertion. We suggest that, in this species, low prolactin levels do not trigger brood desertion. In general, we propose that the prolactin stress response does not reflect overall parental investment in a species where different parts of the breeding cycle are characterized by contrasting individual investment strategies. Production of Radioactive Isotopes through Cosmic Muon Spallation in KamLAND
Radioactive isotopes produced through cosmic muon spallation are a background
for rare-event detection in detectors, double--decay experiments,
and dark-matter searches. Understanding the nature of cosmogenic backgrounds is
particularly important for future experiments aiming to determine the pep and
CNO solar neutrino fluxes, for which the background is dominated by the
spallation production of C. Data from the Kamioka liquid-scintillator
antineutrino detector (KamLAND) provides valuable information for better
understanding these backgrounds, especially in liquid scintillators, and for
checking estimates from current simulations based upon MUSIC, FLUKA, and
GEANT4. Using the time correlation between detected muons and neutron captures,
the neutron production yield in the KamLAND liquid scintillator is measured to
be . For other isotopes,
the production yield is determined from the observed time correlation related
to known isotope lifetimes. We find some yields are inconsistent with
extrapolations based on an accelerator muon beam experiment.Comment: 16 pages, 20 figure
New results on solar neutrino fluxes from 192 days of Borexino data
We report the direct measurement of the ^7Be solar neutrino signal rate
performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran
Sasso. The interaction rate of the 0.862 MeV ^7Be neutrinos is
49+-3(stat)+-4(syst) counts/(day * 100ton). The hypothesis of no oscillation
for ^7Be solar neutrinos is inconsistent with our measurement at the 4sigma
level. Our result is the first direct measurement of the survival probability
for solar nu_e in the transition region between matter-enhanced and
vacuum-driven oscillations. The measurement improves the experimental
determination of the flux of ^7Be, pp, and CNO solar nu_e, and the limit on the
magnetic moment of neutrinos
Search for electron antineutrino interactions with the Borexino Counting Test Facility at Gran Sasso
Electron antineutrino interactions above the inverse beta decay energy of
protons (E_\bar{\nu}_e>1.8) where looked for with the Borexino Counting Test
Facility (CTF). One candidate event survived after rejection of background,
which included muon-induced neutrons and random coincidences. An upper limit on
the solar flux, assumed having the B solar neutrino energy
spectrum, of 1.1 cm~s (90% C.L.) was set with a 7.8
ton year exposure. This upper limit corresponds to a solar neutrino
transition probability, , of 0.02 (90% C.L.).
Predictions for antineutrino detection with Borexino, including geoneutrinos,
are discussed on the basis of background measurements performed with the CTF.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 5 table
