    We report synthesis of colloids with polymer core and inorganic shell consisting of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) which can be used as building blocks for the preparation of conducting composite films. Polymer colloids based on copolymer of styrene and butyl acrylate with variable film formation temperature and functional surface have been prepared by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization. Polymer particles with average size between 140 nm and 220 nm and narrow size distribution were used as templates for deposition of AgNPs by microwave-assisted reduction of silver precursors in aqueous medium. The loading of the AgNPs on the polymer particle surface has been increased up to 60 wt.-%. Obtained hybrid colloids were used for preparation of composite films. The electrical conductivity of the composite films starts to increase if the AgNPs loading on the polymer particle surface is above 20 wt.-%

    Effects of the K+π+ννˉK^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu} and of other processes on the mixing hierarchies in the four-generation model

    We analyze in the four-generation model the first measurement of the branching ratio of rare kaon decay K+π+νnuˉK^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{nu}, along with the other processes of KLKSK_L-K_S mass difference ΔmK\Delta m_K, CP-violating parameter ϵK,BdBdˉ\epsilon_K, B_d-\bar{B_d} mixing, BsBsˉB_s-\bar{B_s} mixing, B(KLμμˉ)B(K_L\to\mu\bar{\mu}), and the upper bound values of D0D0ˉD^0-\bar{D^0} mixing and B(KLπ0ννˉ)B(K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}), and try to search for mixing of the fourth generation in the hierarchical mixing scheme of the Wolfenstein parametrization. Using the results for the mixing of the fourth generation, we discuss predictions of the D0D0ˉD^0-\bar{D^0} mixing (ΔmD\Delta m_D) and the branching ratio of directly CP-violating decay process KLπ0ννˉK_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}, and the effects on the CP asymmetry in neutral B meson decays and the unitarity triangle.Comment: 29 pages written in LaTex. 6 figures(drawn on LaTeX).     Modulation control and spectral shaping of optical fiber supercontinuum generation in the picosecond regime

    Numerical simulations are used to study how fiber supercontinuum generation seeded by picosecond pulses can be actively controlled through the use of input pulse modulation. By carrying out multiple simulations in the presence of noise, we show how tailored supercontinuum Spectra with increased bandwidth and improved stability can be generated using an input envelope modulation of appropriate frequency and depth.     Die im ersten Band der neuen "Schriftenreihe für Kulturökologie und Literaturdidaktik" versammelten "Narrativen Delikatessen" eröffnen ein breites Spektrum kultureller Dimensionen von Ernährung und stecken damit ein neues Forschungsgebiet ab, das im Zuge globaler Ernährungskrisen von immer größerer Relevanz ist. Die Beiträge untersuchen literarische, mediale und künstlerische Darstellungen von Ernährung in diachroner und synchroner Perspektive und legen komplexe Wechselwirkungen zwischen gesellschaftlichen und ästhetisch transformierten Diskursen offen. Dezidierte Mikroanalysen einzelner Texte stehen dabei neben überblicksartigen Untersuchungen zu spezifischen Motiven oder kulturellen Konstanten in der Inszenierung von Essen. Durch interdisziplinäre Verschränkungen gehen die Betrachtungen über den literaturwissenschaftlichen Tellerrand hinaus und erweitern die Forschungsperspektiven zum Themenkomplex Ernährung auf vielfältige Weise

    Time-lapse characterization of hydrothermal seawater and microbial interactions with basaltic tephra at Surtsey Volcano

    A new International Continental Drilling Program (ICDP) project will drill through the 50-yearoldedifice of Surtsey Volcano, the youngest of the Vestmannaeyjar Islands along the south coast of Iceland, to perform interdisciplinary time-lapse investigations of hydrothermal and microbial interactions with basaltic tephra. The volcano, created in 1963–1967 by submarine and subaerial basaltic eruptions, was first drilled in 1979. In October 2014, a workshop funded by the ICDP convened 24 scientists from 10 countries for 3 and a half days on Heimaey Island to develop scientific objectives, site the drill holes, and organize logistical support. Representatives of the Surtsey Research Society and Environment Agency of Iceland also participated. Scientific themes focus on further determinations of the structure and eruptive processes of the type locality of Surtseyan volcanism, descriptions of changes in fluid geochemistry and microbial colonization of the subterrestrial deposits since drilling 35 years ago, and monitoring the evolution of hydrothermal and biological processes within the tephra deposits far into the future through the installation of a Surtsey subsurface observatory. The tephra deposits provide a geologic analog for developing specialty concretes with pyroclastic rock and evaluating their long-term performance under diverse hydrothermal conditions

    Termite sensitivity to temperature affects global wood decay rates.

    Deadwood is a large global carbon store with its store size partially determined by biotic decay. Microbial wood decay rates are known to respond to changing temperature and precipitation. Termites are also important decomposers in the tropics but are less well studied. An understanding of their climate sensitivities is needed to estimate climate change effects on wood carbon pools. Using data from 133 sites spanning six continents, we found that termite wood discovery and consumption were highly sensitive to temperature (with decay increasing >6.8 times per 10°C increase in temperature)-even more so than microbes. Termite decay effects were greatest in tropical seasonal forests, tropical savannas, and subtropical deserts. With tropicalization (i.e., warming shifts to tropical climates), termite wood decay will likely increase as termites access more of Earth's surface

    DSC investigation of the undercooling of SnAgCu solder alloys

    This study investigates the undercooling of commercially available SnAgCu solder alloys by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC - rate 10 K/min). The results for solder spheres of 0 260 μm (free standing, no interfacial reaction) show that Sn-based solder alloys (investigated alloys Sn99.9; SnCu0.5; SnCu0.7; SnCu1.2; SnAg3.0; SnAg4.0; SnAg3.0Cu0.5; SnAg3.0Cu1.2; SnAg4.0Cu1.2; SnAg3.8Cu0.7) solidify with significant undercooling ranging from 16.9 K to 81.7 K in the present study. It is also shown that undercooling can strongly vary from alloy to alloy and even during subsequent measurements of the same sample. Furthermore the results indicate that undercooling increases with decreasing sample size, which has to be taken into account if the interconnect size becomes smaller
