    German Perception Verbs: Automatic Classification of Prototypical and Multiple Non-literal Meanings

    This paper presents a token-based automatic classification of German perception verbs into literal vs. multiple non-literal senses. Based on a corpus-based dataset of German perception verbs and their systematic meaning shifts, we identify one verb of each of the four perception classes optical, acoustic, olfactory, haptic, and use Decision Trees relying on syntactic and semantic corpus-based features to classify the verb uses into 3-4 senses each. Our classifier reaches accuracies between 45.5% and 69.4%, in comparison to baselines between 27.5% and 39.0%. In three out of four cases analyzed our classifier’s accuracy is significantly higher than the according baseline

    HIV diagnosis disclosure to infected children and adolescents; challenges of family caregivers in the Central Region of Ghana

    Background Disclosure of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) to infected older children and adolescents is essential for both personal health maintenance and HIV prevention within the larger population. Non-disclosure of HIV status has been identified as one of the potential barriers to optimum adherence especially in children and adolescents. Like many other countries in the SSA region, Ghana has significant number of children and adolescents infected by HIV, who have increased survival times, due to increased access to ART. However, both family caregivers and healthcare workers face an array of challenges with the disclosure process, including the timing, what information about the child’s HIV status should be shared with him/her and how to go about it. The aim of the study was to identify family caregiver factors associated with non-disclosure of HIV status to infected children and adolescents accessing Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) at the three main ART sites within the Central Region of Ghana. Methods A quantitative analytical survey was conducted among 103 family caregivers of HIV infected children (aged 6–17 years) assessing ART services in the Central Region of Ghana. Data were analyzed using SSPS version 21. Results The age range of caregivers was 20–69 years. The study found a low disclosure rate (23.3%) among caregivers. Majority of the caregivers (80.6%) lacked knowledge on the process of disclosure (how and what to tell child), and majority (64%) also had never received guidance about the disclosure process from their healthcare providers. The main barriers to disclosure were caregiver lack of knowledge regarding the disclosure process and when to disclose, the fear of child’s reaction, and fear of stigmatization and associated negative social consequences. Conclusion These findings suggest a lesser involvement of health care providers in preparing caregivers for the disclosure process. This therefore highlight the need for the National HIV/AIDS/STI Control Program to strengthen the involvement and training of healthcare providers in HIV diagnosis disclosure to infected children, based on context-specific policy guidelines informed by the WHO recommendations

    Nodular lymphocyte predominant hodgkin lymphoma and T cell/histiocyte rich large B cell lymphoma : endpoints of a spectrum of one disease?

    In contrast to the commonly indolent clinical behavior of nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL), T cell/histiocyte rich large B cell lymphoma (THRLBCL) is frequently diagnosed in advanced clinical stages and has a poor prognosis. Besides the different clinical presentations of these lymphoma entities, there are variants of NLPHL with considerable histopathologic overlap compared to THRLBCL. Especially THRLBCL-like NLPHL, a diffuse form of NLPHL, often presents a histopathologic pattern similar to THRLBCL, suggesting a close relationship between both lymphoma entities. To corroborate this hypothesis, we performed gene expression profiling of microdissected tumor cells of NLPHL, THRLBCL-like NLPHL and THRLBCL. In unsupervised analyses, the lymphomas did not cluster according to their entity. Moreover, even in supervised analyses, very few consistently differentially expressed transcripts were found, and for these genes the extent of differential expression was only moderate. Hence, there are no clear and consistent differences in the gene expression of the tumor cells of NLPHL, THRLBCL-like NLPHL and THRLBCL. Based on the gene expression studies, we identified BAT3/BAG6, HIGD1A, and FAT10/UBD as immunohistochemical markers expressed in the tumor cells of all three lymphomas. Characterization of the tumor microenvironment for infiltrating T cells and histiocytes revealed significant differences in the cellular composition between typical NLPHL and THRLBCL cases. However, THRLBCL-like NLPHL presented a histopathologic pattern more related to THRLBCL than NLPHL. In conclusion, NLPHL and THRLBCL may represent a spectrum of the same disease. The different clinical behavior of these lymphomas may be strongly influenced by differences in the lymphoma microenvironment, possibly related to the immune status of the patient at the timepoint of diagnosis

    Transmission Dynamics of COVID-19 in Ghana and the Impact of Public Health Interventions

    This study characterized COVID-19 transmission in Ghana in 2020 and 2021 by estimating the time-varying reproduction number (Rt) and exploring its association with various public health interventions at the national and regional levels. Ghana experienced four pandemic waves, with epidemic peaks in July 2020 and January, August, and December 2021. The epidemic peak was the highest nationwide in December 2021 with Rt ≥ 2. Throughout 2020 and 2021, per-capita cumulative case count by region increased with population size. Mobility data suggested a negative correlation between Rt and staying home during the first 90 days of the pandemic. The relaxation of movement restrictions and religious gatherings was not associated with increased Rt in the regions with fewer case burdens. Rt decreased from \u3e 1 when schools reopened in January 2021 to \u3c 1 after vaccination rollout in March 2021. Findings indicated most public health interventions were associated with Rt reduction at the national and regional levels

    A3^{3}COSMOS: Dissecting the gas content of star-forming galaxies across the main sequence at 1.2 z\leq z < 1.6

    We aim to understand the physical mechanisms that drive star formation in a sample of mass-complete (>109.5M^{9.5}M_{\odot}) star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 1.2 z\leq z < 1.6. We selected SFGs from the COSMOS2020 catalog and applied a uvuv-domain stacking analysis to their archival Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) data. Our stacking analysis provides precise measurements of the mean molecular gas mass and size of SFGs. We also applied an image-domain stacking analysis on their \textit{HST} ii-band and UltraVISTA JJ- and KsK_{\rm s}-band images. Correcting these rest-frame optical sizes using the RhalfstellarlightR_{\rm half-stellar-light}-to-RhalfstellarmassR_{\rm half-stellar-mass} conversion at rest 5,000 angstrom, we obtain the stellar mass size of MS galaxies. Across the MS (-0.2 < Δ\DeltaMS < 0.2), the mean molecular gas fraction of SFGs increases by a factor of \sim1.4, while their mean molecular gas depletion time decreases by a factor of \sim1.8. The scatter of the MS could thus be caused by variations in both the star formation efficiency and molecular gas fraction of SFGs. The majority of the SFGs lying on the MS have RFIRR_{\rm FIR} \approx RstellarR_{\rm stellar}. Their central regions are subject to large dust attenuation. Starbursts (SBs, Δ\DeltaMS>0.7) have a mean molecular gas fraction \sim2.1 times larger and mean molecular gas depletion time \sim3.3 times shorter than MS galaxies. Additionally, they have more compact star-forming regions (\sim2.5~kpc for MS galaxies vs. \sim1.4~kpc for SBs) and systematically disturbed rest-frame optical morphologies, which is consistent with their association with major-mergers. SBs and MS galaxies follow the same relation between their molecular gas mass and star formation rate surface densities with a slope of 1.11.2\sim1.1-1.2, that is, the so-called KS relation.Comment: 20 pages, 17 figure
