    Mechanical pruning and soil organic amending in two terroirs. Effects on wine chemical composition and sensory profile

    The knowledge about the interaction between mechanical pruning and soil organic amending is still scarce. This study aimed to examine the effects of the interaction between these two practices on wine quality. Syrah grapes from two trial fields in Portugal subjected to two different pruning systems (mechanical pruning; hand spur pruning) and five different organic amendment treatments (control, biochar, municipal solid waste compost, cattle manure, and sewage sludge) were harvested and vinified for four years. Mechanical pruning significantly reduced wine alcoholic strength, pH, and total anthocyanins. Mechanical pruning and organic amendments, tendentially reduced wine total phenols and tannin power, known as an “estimation of the astringency potential of the wines”. Tasters found low but significant differences in global appreciation with the pruning system. Sludge tended to reduce wine global appreciation more than municipal solid waste compost and cattle manure, while biochar had no effect on tasters’ preference when compared to the control. There was strong relation between yield and tasters’ preference only above 6 kg/vine and 8 kg/vine depending on the terroir. Mechanical pruning tendentially has significant effects on wine quality when yield raises above a certain level. Thus, with this pruning system, the choice of the organic amendment and its amount must be done considering the destiny of the produced grapes.     Juvenile hormone binding protein traffic - Interaction with ATP synthase and lipid transfer proteins.

    International audienceJuvenile hormone (JH) controls insect development, metamorphosis and reproduction. In insect hemolymph a significant proportion of JH is bound to juvenile hormone binding protein (JHBP), which serves as a carrier supplying the hormone to the target tissues. To shed some light on JHBP passage within insect tissues, the interaction of this carrier with other proteins from Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) was investigated. Our studies revealed the presence of JHBP within the tracheal epithelium and fat body cells in both the membrane and cytoplasmic sections. We found that the interaction between JHBP and membrane proteins occurs with saturation kinetics and is specific and reversible. ATP synthase was indicated as a JHBP membrane binding protein based upon SPR-BIA and MS analysis. It was found that in G. mellonella fat body, this enzyme is present in mitochondrial fraction, plasma membranes and cytosol as well. In the model system containing bovine F(1) ATP synthase and JHBP, the interaction between these two components occurs with K(d)=0.86 nM. In hemolymph we detected JHBP binding to apolipophorin, arylphorin and hexamerin. These results provide the first demonstration of the physical interaction of JHBP with membrane and hemolymph proteins which can be involved in JHBP molecule traffic

    The “Historical Materials BAG”: A New Facilitated Access to Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction Analyses for Cultural Heritage Materials at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility

    International audienceThe European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) has recently commissioned the new Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS). The gain in brightness as well as the continuous development of beamline instruments boosts the beamline performances, in particular in terms of accelerated data acquisition. This has motivated the development of new access modes as an alternative to standard proposals for access to beamtime, in particular via the “block allocation group” (BAG) mode. Here, we present the recently implemented “historical materials BAG”: a community proposal giving to 10 European institutes the opportunity for guaranteed beamtime at two X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) beamlines—ID13, for 2D high lateral resolution XRPD mapping, and ID22 for high angular resolution XRPD bulk analyses—with a particular focus on applications to cultural heritage. The capabilities offered by these instruments, the specific hardware and software developments to facilitate and speed-up data acquisition and data processing are detailed, and the first results from this new access are illustrated with recent applications to pigments, paintings, ceramics and wood

    Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la vida cotidiana de los 'niños tuberculosos', provenientes de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, que fueron internados en el Hospital Marítimo, ubicado a 400km de la metrópolis, en la localidad marítima de Mar del Plata. En 1893, surgió la idea en la Sociedad de Beneficencia de la Capital Federal de fundar un hospital y el Asilo Marítimo destinado a niños enfermos de tuberculosis ósea en general, a niños débiles y convalecientes y también al tratamiento de pacientes con tuberculosis extra-pulmonar. En este artículo, se pretende avanzar en la comprensión de dos problemáticas vinculadas entre sí: por un lado las características de la ingerencia institucionalizada de la Sociedad de Beneficencia y por el otro, la experiencia que estos niños tuberculosos vivieron en ese ámbito.<br>The objective of this work is to analyze the daily life of 'tubercular children'" coming from the city of Buenos Aires. They were hospitalized in the Maritime Asylum located in the seaside city of Mar del Plata, 400 kilometers from the capital. In 1893, in the Charitable Society of the Federal Capital, the idea arose of founding a hospital and maritime asylum for children ill with osseous tuberculosis in general, weak and convalescing children and the treatment of patients with extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. This paper attempts to advance the understanding of two inter-related topics: on the one hand, the characteristics of the institutionalized meddling of the Charitable Society, and, on the other, the experience that these tubercular children had in this institution
