Returns on FDI: Does the U.S. Really Do Better?
According to the U.S. external accounts, U.S. investors earn a significantly higher rate of return on their foreign investments than foreigners earn in the United States. This continued strong performance has produced a positive net investment income balance despite the deterioration in the U.S. net asset position in recent years. We examine the major competing explanations for the apparent differential between the rates of return. In particular, almost the entire difference occurs in FDI, where American firms operating abroad appear to earn a persistently higher return than that earned by foreign firms operating in the U.S. We first review a number of explanations in the literature for this differential. We then offer some new evidence on the role of income shifting between jurisdictions with varying rates of taxation. Using country-specific income and tax data, we find that about one-third of the excess return earned by U.S. corporations abroad can be explained by firms reporting "extra" income in low tax jurisdictions of their affiliates.

Grindr Users Take More Risks, but Are More Open to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Pre-exposure Prophylaxis: Could This Dating App Provide a Platform for HIV Prevention Outreach?
BackgroundTechnology has changed the way that men who have sex with men (MSM) seek sex. More than 60% of MSM in the United States use the internet and/or smartphone-based geospatial networking apps to find sex partners. We correlated use of the most popular app (Grindr) with sexual risk and prevention behavior among MSM.MethodsA nested cohort study was conducted between September 2018 and June 2019 among MSM receiving community-based human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening in central San Diego. During the testing encounter, participants were surveyed for demographics, substance use, risk behavior (previous 3 months), HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use, and Grindr usage. Participants who tested negative for HIV and who were not on PrEP were offered immediate PrEP.ResultsThe study included 1256 MSM, 1090 of whom (86.8%) were not taking PrEP. Overall, 580 of 1256 (46%) participants indicated that they used Grindr in the previous 7 days. Grindr users reported significantly higher risk behavior (greater number of male partners and condomless sex) and were more likely to test positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea (8.6% vs 4.7% of nonusers; P = .005). Grindr users were also more likely to be on PrEP (18.7% vs 8.7% of nonusers; P < .001) and had fewer newly diagnosed HIV infections (9 vs 26 among nonusers; P = .014). Grindr users were also nearly twice as likely as nonusers to initiate PrEP (24.6% vs 14%; P < .001).ConclusionsGiven the higher risk behavior and greater acceptance of PrEP among MSM who used Grindr, Grindr may provide a useful platform to promote HIV and STI testing and increase PrEP uptake
Evolution of the Gas Mass Fraction of Progenitors to Today's Massive Galaxies: ALMA Observations in the CANDELS GOODS-S Field
We present an ALMA survey of dust continuum emission in a sample of 70
galaxies in the redshift range z=2-5 selected from the CANDELS GOODS-S field.
Multi-Epoch Abundance Matching (MEAM) is used to define potential progenitors
of a z = 0 galaxy of stellar mass 1.5 10^11 M_sun. Gas masses are derived from
the 850um luminosity. Ancillary data from the CANDELS GOODS-S survey are used
to derive the gas mass fractions. The results at z<=3 are mostly in accord with
expectations: The detection rates are 75% for the z=2 redshift bin, 50% for the
z=3 bin and 0% for z>=4. The average gas mass fraction for the detected z=2
galaxies is f_gas = 0.55+/-0.12 and f_gas = 0.62+/-0.15 for the z=3 sample.
This agrees with expectations for galaxies on the star-forming main sequence,
and shows that gas fractions have decreased at a roughly constant rate from z=3
to z=0. Stacked images of the galaxies not detected with ALMA give upper limits
to f_gas of <0.08 and <0.15, for the z=2 and z=3 redshift bins. None of our
galaxies in the z=4 and z=5 sample are detected and the upper limit from
stacked images, corrected for low metallicity, is f_gas<0.66. We do not think
that lower gas-phase metallicities can entirely explain the lower dust
luminosities. We briefly consider the possibility of accretion of very
low-metallicity gas to explain the absence of detectable dust emission in our

Polar flagella glycosylation in Aeromonas: genomic characterization and involvement of a specific glycosyltransferase (Fgi-1) in heterogeneous flagella glycosylation
Polar flagella from mesophilic Aeromonas strains have previously been shown to be modified with a range of glycans. Mass spectrometry studies of purified polar flagellins suggested the glycan typically includes a putative pseudaminic acid like derivative; while some strains are modified with this single monosaccharide, others modified with a heterologous glycan. In the current study, we demonstrate that genes involved in polar flagella glycosylation are clustered in highly polymorphic genomic islands flanked by pseudaminic acid biosynthetic genes (pse). Bioinformatic analysis of mesophilic Aeromonas genomes identified three types of polar flagella glycosylation islands (FGIs), denoted Group I, II and III. FGI Groups I and III are small genomic islands present in Aeromonas strains with flagellins modified with a single monosaccharide pseudaminic acid derivative. Group II were large genomic islands, present in strains found to modify polar flagellins with heterogeneous glycan moieties. Group II, in addition to pse genes, contained numerous glycosyltransferases and other biosynthetic enzymes. All Group II strains shared a common glycosyltransferase downstream of luxC that we named flagella glycosylation island 1, fgi-1, in A. piscicola AH-3. We demonstrate that Fgi-1 transfers the first sugar of the heterogeneous glycan to the pseudaminic acid derivative linked to polar flagellins and could be used as marker for polysaccharidic glycosylation of Aeromonas polar flagella
The Family Navigator: A pilot intervention to support intensive care unit family surrogates
Background
Although communication problems between family surrogates and intensive care unit (ICU) clinicians have been documented, there are few effective interventions. Nurses have the potential to play an expanded role in ICU communication and decision making.
Objectives
To conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial of the Family Navigator (FN), a distinct nursing role to address family members’ unmet communication needs early in an ICU stay.
Methods
An inter-disciplinary team developed the FN protocol. A randomized controlled pilot intervention trial of the FN was performed in a tertiary referral hospital ICU to test the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention. The intervention addressed informational and emotional communication needs through daily contact using structured clinical updates, emotional and informational support modules, family meeting support and follow-up phone calls.
Results
Twenty-six surrogate/patient pairs (13 per study arm) were enrolled. Surrogates randomized to the intervention had contact with the FN 90% or more of eligible patient days. All surrogates agreed or strongly agreed that they would recommend the FN to other families. Open-ended comments from both surrogates and clinicians were uniformly positive. For both groups, 100% of baseline data collection interviews and 81% of 6–8 week follow-up interviews were completed.
Conclusions
A fully integrated nurse empowered to facilitate decision making is a feasible intervention in the ICU setting. It is well-received by ICU families and staff. A larger randomized controlled trial is needed to demonstrate an impact on important outcomes, such as surrogate well-being and decision quality
Contribution of common and rare variants to bipolar disorder susceptibility in extended pedigrees from population isolates.
Current evidence from case/control studies indicates that genetic risk for psychiatric disorders derives primarily from numerous common variants, each with a small phenotypic impact. The literature describing apparent segregation of bipolar disorder (BP) in numerous multigenerational pedigrees suggests that, in such families, large-effect inherited variants might play a greater role. To identify roles of rare and common variants on BP, we conducted genetic analyses in 26 Colombia and Costa Rica pedigrees ascertained for bipolar disorder 1 (BP1), the most severe and heritable form of BP. In these pedigrees, we performed microarray SNP genotyping of 838 individuals and high-coverage whole-genome sequencing of 449 individuals. We compared polygenic risk scores (PRS), estimated using the latest BP1 genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics, between BP1 individuals and related controls. We also evaluated whether BP1 individuals had a higher burden of rare deleterious single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and rare copy number variants (CNVs) in a set of genes related to BP1. We found that compared with unaffected relatives, BP1 individuals had higher PRS estimated from BP1 GWAS statistics (P = 0.001 ~ 0.007) and displayed modest increase in burdens of rare deleterious SNVs (P = 0.047) and rare CNVs (P = 0.002 ~ 0.033) in genes related to BP1. We did not observe rare variants segregating in the pedigrees. These results suggest that small-to-moderate effect rare and common variants are more likely to contribute to BP1 risk in these extended pedigrees than a few large-effect rare variants
Ability-Based Methods for Personalized Keyboard Generation
This study introduces an ability-based method for personalized keyboard
generation, wherein an individual's own movement and human-computer interaction
data are used to automatically compute a personalized virtual keyboard layout.
Our approach integrates a multidirectional point-select task to characterize
cursor control over time, distance, and direction. The characterization is
automatically employed to develop a computationally efficient keyboard layout
that prioritizes each user's movement abilities through capturing directional
constraints and preferences. We evaluated our approach in a study involving 16
participants using inertial sensing and facial electromyography as an access
method, resulting in significantly increased communication rates using the
personalized keyboard (52.0 bits/min) when compared to a generically optimized
keyboard (47.9 bits/min). Our results demonstrate the ability to effectively
characterize an individual's movement abilities to design a personalized
keyboard for improved communication. This work underscores the importance of
integrating a user's motor abilities when designing virtual interfaces.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
Rotational dynamics and heating of trapped nanovaterite particles
We synthesize, optically trap, and rotate individual nanovaterite crystals with a mean particle radius of 423 nm. Rotation rates of up to 4.9 kHz in heavy water are recorded. Laser-induced heating due to residual absorption of the nanovaterite particle results in the superlinear behavior of the rotation rate as a function of trap power. A finite element method based on the Navier-Stokes model for the system allows us to determine the residual optical absorption coefficient for a trapped nanovaterite particle. This is further confirmed by the theoretical model. Our data show that the translational Stokes drag force and rotational Stokes drag torque need to be modified with appropriate correction factors to account for the power dissipated by the nanoparticle
Long-term efficacy of first-line ibrutinib treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia in patients with TP53 aberrations : a pooled analysis from four clinical trials
TP53 aberrations [del(17p) or TP53 mutation] predict poor survival with chemoimmunotherapy in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). We evaluated long-term efficacy and safety of first-line ibrutinib-based therapy in patients with CLL bearing TP53 aberrations in a pooled analysis across four studies: PCYC-1122e, RESONATE-2 (PCYC-1115/16), iLLUMINATE (PCYC-1130) and ECOG-ACRIN E1912. The pooled analysis included 89 patients with TP53 aberrations receiving first-line treatment with single-agent ibrutinib (n = 45) or ibrutinib in combination with an anti-CD20 antibody (n = 44). All 89 patients had del(17p) (53% of 89 patients) and/or TP53 mutation (91% of 58 patients with TP53 sequencing results available). With a median follow-up of 49·8 months (range, 0·1-95·9), median progression-free survival was not reached. Progression-free survival rate and overall survival rate estimates at four years were 79% and 88%, respectively. Overall response rate was 93%, including complete response in 39% of patients. No new safety signals were identified in this analysis. Forty-six percent of patients remained on ibrutinib treatment at last follow-up. With median follow-up of four years (up to eight years), results from this large, pooled, multi-study data set suggest promising long-term outcomes of first-line ibrutinib-based therapy in patients with TP53 aberrations.
