Patterson v. McLean: A Confirmation of the New Right at the U.S. Supreme Court

In two consecutive national elections a conservative, Ronald Reagan, was elected President of the United States. When Justice Lewis Powell announced his retirement during the late months of the Reagan administration, it was apparent that the President's last appointment could shift the ideology of the Court to conservatism for the first time since the presidency of Dwight Eisenhower. President Reagan's prior appointments, Sandra Day O'Connor and Antonin Scalia, had joined William Rehnquist, an appointee of President Nixon and Bryon White, an appointee of President Kennedy to comprise a vociferous minority of four in many instances, especially cases involving civil rights. The unexpected opportunity for the appointment of a conservative jurist caused great anxiety in the media and in the U.S. Senate, the later having confirmation power over presidential appointments to the Supreme Court. This article examines the consequences of the Senate's confirmation of Justice Anthony Kennedy to the Supreme Court. The impact, which was immediate and dramatic, indicates that conservative ideology will predominate on major civil rights issues for the remainder of this century

Proctolin and an Endogenous Proctolin-Like Peptide Enhance the Contractility of the Limulus Heart

Synthetic proctolin increases the force but not the rate of heart contractions of Limulus in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The threshold of this effect is 3 × 10−10M and the ED50 is approximately 10−8M. At concentrations up to 10−7 M, proctolin has no effect on the rhythmic electrical activity of the isolated cardiac ganglion, and it does not change the simple and compound postsynaptic potentials recorded at the cardiac neuromuscular junction. Proctolin acts directly on the cardiac muscle fibres. Electrically stimulated myocardia show a proctolin-induced increase in contraction amplitude with the same concentration dependence as the intact heart. A compound with an apparent molecular weight of 700–800 occurs in the Limulus nervous system, particularly in the cardiac ganglion. This compound resembles proctolin in being heat-stable, resistant to trypsin and chymotrypsin cleavage, and losing activity in a time-dependent manner in response to treatment with leucine aminopeptidase or pronase. This peptide induces spontaneous contractions and a contracture of the cockroach hindgut in a manner similar to proctolin. Moreover, the Limulus inotropic peptide, like proctolin, increases the force of contraction of the Limulus heart without affecting beat frequency. It is concluded that an endogenous, proctolin-like peptide is an inotropic modulator of the Limulus heart, acting directly on the muscle fibres and not affecting cardiac ganglion activity

The Visible Invisible Object: A Photographic Enquiry 'Recording' A Lived Life

Abstract The Visible Invisible Object: A Photographic Enquiry ‘Recording’ A Lived Life David George Sullivan This practice-led research project is centred upon a photographic ‘recording’ of everyday ‘objects’, which has been built up since 2004. I have ‘recorded’ everyday ‘objects’ that I have experienced using the camera lens, selected because of the form of the ‘thing’ and to act as a vehicle to signify the ‘encounter’, or a related signified memory. The images act as signifiers. The aim of this practice is to ‘record’ ‘encounters’ and memories through the positing of ‘objects’; to make a selection from this body of work and consider the relation between images, between images and their subject, and between images and a lived life. This led me to a distinctive phenomenological approach to a photographic – based practice. The sequence of chapters in the written thesis is intended to reflect the research process. It moves from a consideration of the individual photograph, to groups or suites of images, and thence to a larger body of work. In a series of parallel movements the act of taking the photograph, the consideration of images in relation to each other, and the relation between the image and possibilities of narrative become the focus of discussion. In each of these sections relevant examples from other practitioners and theoretical writings, strongly based in phenomenology contextualise specific aspects of my practice and my practical research. The practical element of the project is represented by a portfolio presentation of a selection of my images at the beginning of the thesis along with their accompanying texts, and by an exhibition of a similar selection of images also with their accompanying texts taken from my body of work. Both of these presentations parallel the discursive structure of the thesis supporting the enquiry through performing or demonstrating aspects of individual images, groups of images and the story-telling or narrative capacities of the photographs. Extracts from personal narratives are presented alongside some of the photographs. In other sections, the importance of the word - image relationship is comparatively analysed by presenting a further set of artwork, which remain untitled, and without narrative

Group discussion versus persuasive speech in changing behavior

    Get PDF
There has been much research concerning attitude change, but few studies examining concomitant changes in behavior. Those studies that have studied behavioral changes have produced inconsistent results The present study was directed at exploring the relationship between different methods of changing behavior. Forty-six undergraduate students were assigned to either a control, persuasive speech, general discussion, or problem-solving discussion conditions. Experimental conditions were measured by two dependent variables: the number of volunteers (behavioral intention) and appearance at a meeting the following day (overt behavior). With regard to behavioral intentions, persuasive speech did not differ from controls; both types of discussion were equally more effective than a persuasive speech. With regard to overt behavior, no subjects, in any condition, appeared at the meeting. It was concluded that attitudes are not necessari iy consistent with actions

Heritability of pain catastrophizing and associations with experimental pain outcomes: a twin study

This study used a twin paradigm to examine genetic and environmental contributions to pain catastrophizing and the observed association between pain Catastrophizing and cold-pressor task (CPT) outcomes. Male and female monozygotic (n = 206) and dizygotic twins (n = 194) torn the University of Washington Twin Registry completed a measure of pain catastrophizing and performed a CPT challenge, As expected, pain catastrophizing emerged as a significant predictor of several CPT outcomeS, including cold-pressor Immersion Tolerance, Pain Tolerance, and Delayed Pain Rating. The heritability estimate for pain catastrophizing was found to be 37% with the remaining 63% of variance attributable to unique environmental influence. Additionally, the Observed associations between pain catastrophizing and CPT outcomes were not found attributable to shared genetics or environmental exposure, which suggests a direct relationship between catastrophizing and experimental pain. outcomes. This Study is the first to examine the heritability of pain catastrophizing and potential processes by which pain catastrophizing is related to experimental pain response

RF Roaming System Locator: A Modular Omnidirectional Antenna System

    Get PDF
Drones are increasingly common in everything from entertainment to delivery services. Currently, GPS and wireless triangulation are the two main methods of tracking drones and collision avoidance. The main problem with these two methods are accuracy and mobility. This thesis goes into building a system that is able to solve the two main drawbacks, by using a completely contained antenna system. The system is robust and can work in a variety of environments and situations. While the thesis focuses on drone tracking, the system is built with modularity in mind and can be adapted to track other RF signals with proper RF down conversion modules. This thesis will go in depth in how this aforementioned system was conceptualized, designed, built, and evaluated
