    Trade and child labor: a general equilibrium analysis

    This paper augments the existing literature on trade and child labor by exploring the effects of terms of trade changes in the context of a three good general equilibrium model, where one of the goods is a non-traded good. We find that under quasi-linear preferences the effect of the terms of trade on child labor depends critically on the pattern of substitutability (or complimentarity) in the excess demand functions between the export good and the non-traded good. We extend the analysis to the case where factors move freely between the three goods as in a Heckscher-Ohlin type framework. Finally, we show that a balanced budget policy of taxing the education of skilled families and subsidizing the education of unskilled families must reduce child labor without any impact on aggregate welfare.Child labor ; Balance of payments

    AQUEOUS BARK EXTRACT OF TERMINALIA ARJUNA PROTECTS AGAINST PHENYLHYDRAZINE INDUCED OXIDATIVE DAMAGE IN GOAT RED BLOOD CELL MEMBRANE BOUND AND METABOLIC ENZYMES

    Objective: The objective of the present study is to determine the phenylhydrazine (PHZ) induced oxidative stress mediated alteration in the metabolic status and morphology of the red blood cells (RBC) and amelioration of the same by aqueous bark extract of Terminalia arjuna (TA).Methods: Fresh goat blood collected from local Kolkata Corporation approved slaughter house, was used for the present study. Packed cells were prepared from the freshly collected goat blood and were divided into four groups as follows for further studies i. e Group I: Control (CON), Group II: TA bark extract treated, named T5C (5 mg/ml, incubation mixture; positive control), Group III: PHZ treated (1 mM), Group IV: PHZ treated+TA bark extract at a dose of 5 mg/ml, named as P+T5. ROS, superoxide anion radical, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity were determined. Intracellular iron and intracellular nitrate concentration were estimated. Activities of various membrane-bound enzymes like Na+/K+-ATPase, Mg2+-ATPase and Ca2+-ATPase and Ach-E were determined. Moreover, the activities of some metabolic enzymes like glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), hexokinase, aldolase, lactase dehydrogenase were also studied. In addition, the morphological structure of RBCs was also determined.Results: PHZ treatment caused significant alterations in RBC morphology as well as altered the activities of membrane-bound as well as metabolic enzymes. All these changes following oxidative stress were found to be ameliorated when the RBCs were co-treated with PHZ and aqueous bark extract of TA. However, aqueous bark extract of TA alone did not exhibit any such changes in RBC.Conclusion: The aqueous bark extract of TA ameliorates PHZ-induced oxidative damages in goat RBC possibly by an antioxidant mechanism(s).     Etiologic factors related to unsatisfactory ThinPrep cervical cytology: Evaluation and potential solutions to improve

    BACKGROUND: In cervical cytology, the unsatisfactory rates for ThinPrep (TP) are slightly higher compared to SurePath. We examined various causes and explored potential for resolution of this discrepancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Totally, 19,422 cases were reviewed and 1000 unsatisfactory specimens were selected and analyzed. 531 specimens were available for wash protocol. Out of 114 unsatisfactory specimens associated with atrophic cellular changes (ACC), 48 were resubmitted by provider and reevaluated. RESULTS: Lubricant and lubricant-like debris/contamination (LUBE) was the most common cause of unsatisfactory specimens (68%; 681/1000) followed by blood (7.5%); ACC only (without other interfering factors) (2.4%); inflammation (3.0%); and combinations thereof (1.9%). 11.5% showed scant cellularity without an identifiable cause. 3.3% were virtually acellular. Wash protocol improved cellularity in 48% (256/531) of cases. However, only 29% (73/256) of those were satisfactory (with more than 5000 cells). Quantitative reduction in LUBE after wash protocol varied with different morphological subtypes. Interpretation patterns on satisfactory specimens after wash protocol were comparable to the results on selected cohort of specimens during the same study period. Out of 114 ACC, wash protocol was performed on 68 ACC specimens leading to satisfactory TP in 24% (16/68). Totally, 48 cases reported as unsatisfactory with ACC, were resubmitted by the providers between 2 weeks and 2 years. 44 (92%) showed increased cellularity, out of which 52% (23/44) did not show ACC. CONCLUSION: LUBE was the most common cause of unsatisfactory TP in addition to interference by blood and association with atrophic changes. Knowing the morphological spectrum of LUBE would help to identify it as the cause of unsatisfactory TP. Communicating the cause of unsatisfactory TP such as LUBE, ACC, and blood would hint the provider to take appropriate precaution during submission of the repeat specimen, leading to improved patient care

    Clinical Characteristics of Breast Cancers in African‐American Women with Benign Breast Disease: A Comparison to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program

    Benign breast disease ( BBD ) is a very common condition, diagnosed in approximately half of all A merican women throughout their lifecourse. White women with BBD are known to be at substantially increased risk of subsequent breast cancer; however, nothing is known about breast cancer characteristics that develop after a BBD diagnosis in A frican‐ A merican women. Here, we compared 109 breast cancers that developed in a population of A frican‐ A merican women with a history of BBD to 10,601 breast cancers that developed in a general population of A frican‐ A merican women whose cancers were recorded by the M etropolitan D etroit C ancer S urveillance S ystem ( MDCSS population). Demographic and clinical characteristics of the BBD population were compared to the MDCSS population, using chi‐squared tests, F isher's exact tests, t ‐tests, and W ilcoxon tests where appropriate. K aplan– M eier curves and Cox regression models were used to examine survival. Women in the BBD population were diagnosed with lower grade (p = 0.02), earlier stage cancers (p = 0.003) that were more likely to be hormone receptor‐positive (p = 0.03) compared to the general metropolitan Detroit A frican‐ A merican population. In situ cancers were more common among women in the BBD cohort (36.7%) compared to the MDCSS population (22.1%, p < 0.001). Overall, women in the BBD population were less likely to die from breast cancer after 10 years of follow‐up (p = 0.05), but this association was not seen when analyses were limited to invasive breast cancers. These results suggest that breast cancers occurring after a BBD diagnosis may have more favorable clinical parameters, but the majority of cancers are still invasive, with survival rates similar to the general A frican‐ A merican population.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/109284/1/tbj12331.pd

    Human Papillomavirus Infection and Cervical Dysplasia in a Subset of Arab American Women

    Background: With limited health data on Arab Americans (AAs), we sought to describe the health-seeking behaviors, prevalence of abnormal cervical cytology and high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) serotypes, and the relationship with socioeconomic factors among a subset of AA women. Methods: Retrospective observational cohort study of women undergoing routine cancer screening at the Arab-American Center for Economic and Social Services clinic. Data collected included demographics, tobacco use, gross monthly income, prior Papanicolaou (Pap) smear history, and results of cervical cytology and high-risk HPV testing. Results: Of 430 women, 74 (17%) reported that they had never had a Pap smear. Three hundred eighty-eight (90%) women had cervical cytology interpreted as negative for intraepithelial lesion, the remaining 42 (10%) women had abnormal results. Thirteen (3%) women reported prior abnormal Pap smear, which was significantly associated with additional abnormal Pap smear on multivariable analyses (odds ratio 65.46; 95% confidence interval [CI] 17.01-338.62; p \u3c 0.001). One hundred twenty-five (29%) women were tested for high-risk HPV serotypes; 106 (91%) had negative results, 4 (3%) were positive for HPV-16, 7 (6%) were positive for other high-risk serotypes, and 8 results were not recorded. A negative HPV screen was significantly associated with a negative Pap smear (Fisher\u27s exact test p = 0.006). There was no significant association between abnormal cervical cytology and evaluated socioeconomic factors. Conclusions: Additional population based-studies to determine cervical dysplasia/cancer and HPV prevalence in women of Middle Eastern descent are needed

    Impact of positive cytology in uterine serous carcinoma: A reassessment

    Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of peritoneal cytology status among other clinicopathological parameters in uterine serous carcinoma (USC). Methods: A retrospective study of 148 patients diagnosed with uterine serous carcinoma from 1997 to 2016 at two academic medical centers in the Detroit metropolitan area was done. A central gynecologic pathologist reviewed all available slides and confirmed the histologic diagnosis of each case of USC. We assessed the prognostic impact of various clinicopathological parameters on overall survival (OS) and endometrial cancer-specific survival (ECSS). Those parameters included race, body mass index (BMI), stage at diagnosis, tumor size, lymphovascular invasion (LVSI), peritoneal cytology status, receipt of adjuvant treatment, and comorbidity count using the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). We used Cox proportional hazards models and 95% confidence intervals for statistical analysis. Results: Positive peritoneal cytology had a statistically significant effect on OS (HR: 2.09, 95% CI: [1.19, 3.68]) and on ECSS (HR: 2.02, 95% CI: [1.06 - 3.82]). LVSI had a statistically significant effect on both OS (HR: 2.27, 95% CI: [1.14, 4.53]) and ECSS (HR: 3.45, 95% CI: [1.49, 7.99]). Black or African American (AA) race was also found to have a significant effect on both OS (HR: 1.92, 95% CI: [1.07, 3.47]) and ECSS (HR: 2.01, 95% CI: [1.02, 3.98]). Other factors including BMI and tumor size \u3e 1 cm did not show a statistically significant impact on OS or ECSS. Conclusions: Peritoneal washings with positive cytology and LVSI are important prognostic tools that may have a significant impact on overall survival in USC and can be used as independent negative prognosticators to help guide adjuvant treatment

    Analysis of the expression of human tumor antigens in ovarian cancer tissues

    Biomarkers for early detection of cancer have great clinical diagnostic potential. Numerous reports have documented the generation of humoral immune responses that are triggered in response to changes in protein expression patterns in tumor tissues and these biomarkers are referred to as tumor associated antigens (TAAs). Using a high-throughput technology, we previously identified 65 proteins as diagnostically useful TAAs by profiling the humoral immune responses in ovarian cancer (OVCA) patients. Here we determined the expression status of some of those TAAs in tissues from OVCA patients. The protein expression patterns of 4 of those 65 antigens, namely NASP, RCAS1, Nijmegen breakage syndrome1 (NBS1) and eIF5A, along with p53 and Her2 (known molecular prognosticators) and two proteins that interact with NBS1, MRE11 and RAD50, were assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC). NASP and RCAS1 proteins were more frequently expressed in ovarian cancer tissues than with normal ovarian tissue and serous cystadenomas and MRE11 was less frequently expressed. When evaluated simultaneously, only NASP and MRE11 remained statistically significant with sensitivity of 66% and specificity of 89%. None of these proteins’ expression levels were prognostic for survival. Together, our results indicate that occurrence of humoral immune responses against some of these TAAs in OVCA patients is triggered by antigen protein overexpression

    Search for new particles in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search is presented for new particles produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1), collected in 2017-2018 with the CMS detector. Machine learning techniques are used to define separate categories for events with narrow jets from initial-state radiation and events with large-radius jets consistent with a hadronic decay of a W or Z boson. A statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data sample of 36 fb(-1), collected in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model background expectation determined from control samples in data. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the branching fraction of an invisible decay of the Higgs boson, as well as constraints on simplified models of dark matter, on first-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to quarks and neutrinos, and on models with large extra dimensions. Several of the new limits, specifically for spin-1 dark matter mediators, pseudoscalar mediators, colored mediators, and leptoquarks, are the most restrictive to date.Peer reviewe
