Parasporal proteins as an approach to control diseases:genetic modifications, and characterization

    Get PDF
Parasporal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are well studied in various fields of environmental biotechnology and recently in medical biology. Correspondingly, this dissertation presents the use of site-directed mutagenesis technologies to obtain mutant cry and parasporin proteins with different effects against vector-borne diseases and human cancer cell lines. The use of in silico modeling offers a possible explanation of how the altered residues are involved in changing their structure and interacting with cell membrane receptors. The proteins from this work can be used as targets for new studies that will provide more information about the mechanism of action of Bt proteins, and open the door to the employment of these biomolecules in combating diseases

Real-time estimation of free spaces in regulated on-street parking spaces using artificial neural networks

[EN] In this paper we will develop a methodology for estimating the percentage of free parking spaces available in the area of the city where a user is interested through a real-time query in a mobile app. The smartphone screen will provide a colour-coded map of the requested area that indicates the saturation state of the parking spaces.

    Get PDF

EEG Classification with Discrete Wavelet Transforms and Energy Distribution

    Get PDF
The overall aim of this investigation is to allow paralyzed individuals to regain motor movement with thought controlled robotic devices and in doing so provide them with a higher level of independence. The specific goal of this project is to classify EEG movement signals through a combination of discrete wavelet transforms and energy distribution. Using the energy distribution of these signals a neural network can be implemented to more accurately differentiate distinct motor movements

    Get PDF

A Proof-theoretic approach to logic programming

    Get PDF
Projet CHLOEWe develop the foundations of Horn clause logic programming in a proof-theoretic style. We present a formal unification system for first order terms including a syntactic representation of environments and formalisms for the bottom-up and top down computation of answers in a unified formal setting. In passing, we propose an abstrac unification machine. We also discuss the possibility and implications of representing logic program evaluation strategies in the lambda calculus

Interpretation of dam deformation and leakage with boosted regression trees

Predictive models are essential in dam safety assessment. They have been traditionally based on simple statistical tools such as the hydrostatic-season-time (HST) model. These tools are well known to have limitations in terms of accuracy and reliability. In the recent years, the examples of application of machine learning and related techniques are becoming more frequent as an alternative to HST. While they proved to feature higher flexibility and prediction accuracy, they are also more difficult to interpret. As a consequence, the vast majority of the research is limited to prediction accuracy estimation. In this work, one of the most popular machine learning techniques (boosted regression trees), was applied to model 8 radial displacements and 4 leakage flows at La Baells Dam. The possibilities of model interpretation were explored: the relative influence of each predictor was computed, and the partial dependence plots were obtained. Both results were analysed to draw conclusions on dam response to environmental variables, and its evolution over time. The results show that this technique can efficiently identify dam performance changes with higher flexibility and reliability than simple regression models

Posterior Lingual Abscess; Report of Two Cases

    Get PDF
The lingual abscess is rare due to several protective mechanisms against infection in this location. Concretely, the abscess in the base of the tongue (posterior lingual abscess) is even more exceptional. Its prompt detection is crucial to avoid potentially fatal airway complications. To familiarize physicians with this condition, we report 2 cases of posterior lingual abscess. Both were referred to our emergency department due to minor oropharyngeal complaints. Finally, both were diagnosed and required surgical drainage. The clinical evolution was successful: both were discharged in less than 72 hours and follow-up one week later confirmed clinical recover
