    Environments and Morphologies of Red Sequence Galaxies with Residual Star Formation in Massive Clusters

    We present a photometric investigation into recent star formation in galaxy clusters at z ~ 0.1. We use spectral energy distribution templates to quantify recent star formation in large X-ray selected clusters from the LARCS survey using matched GALEX NUV photometry. These clusters all have signs of red sequence galaxy recent star formation (as indicated by blue NUV-R colour), regardless of cluster morphology and size. A trend in environment is found for these galaxies, such that they prefer to occupy low density, high cluster radius environments. The morphology of these UV bright galaxies suggests that they are in fact red spirals, which we confirm with light curves and Galaxy Zoo voting percentages as morphological proxies. These UV bright galaxies are therefore seen to be either truncated spiral galaxies, caught by ram pressure in falling into the cluster, or high mass spirals, with the photometry dominated by the older stellar population.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 pages, 11 figure

    Evidence for anisotropic quenching in massive galaxy clusters at z ≈ 0.5

    A recent observational result finds that the quenching of satellites in groups at z = 0.08 has an angular dependence relative to the semimajor axis of the central galaxy. This observation is described as ‘anisotropic quenching’ or ‘angular conformity’. In this paper, I study the variation in the colour of a mass-limited sample of satellite galaxies relative to their angle from the major axis of the brightest cluster galaxy in the CLASH clusters up to z ∼ 0.5, 4 Gyr further in lookback time. The same result is found: galaxies close to the major axis are more quenched than those along the minor axis. I also find that the star-forming galaxies tend to avoid a region ±45○ from the major axis. This quenching signal is thought to be driven by AGN outflows along the minor axis, reducing the density of the intergalactic medium and thus the strength of ram pressure. Here, I will discuss potential alternative mechanisms. Finally, I note that the advent of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and Euclid surveys will allow for a more detailed study of this phenomenon and its evolution

    Measurement of the intracluster light at z ~ 1

    A significant fraction of the total photospheric light in nearby galaxy clusters is thought to be contained within the diffuse intracluster light (ICL), which extends 100s of kpc from cluster cores. The study of the ICL can reveal details of the evolutionary histories and processes occurring within galaxy clusters, however since it has a very low surface brightness it is often difficult to detect. We present here the first measurements of the ICL as a fraction of total cluster light at z \sim 1 using deep J-band (1.2 {\mu}m) imaging from HAWK-I on the VLT. We investigate the ICL in 6 X-ray selected galaxy clusters at 0.8< z <1.2 and find that the ICL below isophotes {\mu}(J) = 22 mag/arcsec2 constitutes 1-4% of the total cluster light within a radius R500. This is broadly consistent with simulations of the ICL at a similar redshift and when compared to nearby observations suggests that the fraction of the total cluster light that is in the ICL has increased by a factor 2 - 4 since z\sim1. We also find the fraction of the total cluster light contained within the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) to be 2.0-6.3% at these redshifts, which in 5 out of 6 cases is larger than the fraction of the ICL component, in contrast to results from nearby clusters. This suggests that the evolution in cluster cores involves substantial stripping activity at late times, in addition to the early build up of the BCG stellar mass through merging. The presence of significant amounts of stellar light at large radii from these BCGs may help towards solving the recent disagreement between the semi-analytic model predictions of BCG mass growth (e.g. De Lucia & Blaziot, 2007) and the observed large masses and scale sizes reported for BCGs at high redshift.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures.     Early Quenching of Massive Protocluster Galaxies Around <i>z</i>=2.2 Radio Galaxies

    Radio galaxies are among the most massive galaxies in the high-redshift Universe and are known to often lie in protocluster environments. We have studied the fields of seven z = 2.2 radio galaxies with High Acuity Wide field K-band Imager (HAWK-I) narrow-band and broad-band imaging in order to map out their environment using Hα emitters (HAEs). The results are compared to the blank field HAE survey HiZELS. All of the radio galaxy fields are overdense in HAEs relative to a typical HiZELS field of the same area and four of the seven are richer than all except one of 65 essentially random HiZELS subfields of the same size. The star formation rates of the massive HAEs are lower than those necessary to have formed their stellar population in the preceding Gyr – indicating that these galaxies are likely to have formed the bulk of their stars at higher redshifts, and are starting to quench

    Deep-CEE I: Fishing for Galaxy Clusters with Deep Neural Nets:A Deep Learning Search for Galaxy Clusters

    We introduce Deep-CEE (Deep Learning for Galaxy Cluster Extraction and Evaluation), a proof of concept for a novel deep learning technique, applied directly to wide-field colour imaging to search for galaxy clusters, without the need for photometric catalogues. This technique is complementary to traditional methods and could also be used in combination with them to confirm galaxy cluster candidates. We use a state-of-the-art probabilistic algorithm, adapted to localize and classify galaxy clusters from other astronomical objects in SDSS imaging. As there is an abundance of labelled data for galaxy clusters from previous classifications in publicly available catalogues, we do not need to rely on simulated data. This means we keep our training data as realistic as possible, which is advantageous when training a deep learning algorithm. Ultimately, we will apply our model to surveys such as LSST and Euclid to probe wider and deeper into unexplored regions of the Universe. This will produce large samples of both high redshift and low mass clusters, which can be utilized to constrain both environment-driven galaxy evolution and cosmology

    Near-ultraviolet signatures of environment-driven galaxy quenching in Sloan Digital Sky Survey groups

We have investigated the effect of group environment on residual star formation in galaxies, using Galaxy Evolution Explorer near-ultraviolet (NUV) galaxy photometry with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey group catalogue of Yang et al. We compared the (NUV - r) colours of grouped and non-grouped galaxies, and find a significant increase in the fraction of red sequence galaxies with blue (NUV - r) colours outside of groups. When comparing galaxies in mass-matched samples of satellite (non-central), and non-grouped galaxies, we found a > 4σ difference in the distribution of (NUV - r) colours, and an (NUV - r) blue fraction > 3σ higher outside groups. A comparison of satellite and non-grouped samples has found the NUV fraction is a factor of ~2 lower for satellite galaxies between 10 10.5 and 10 10.7 M ⊙ , showing that higher mass galaxies are more likely to have residual star formation when not influenced by a group potential. There was a higher (NUV - r) blue fraction of galaxies with lower Sérsic indices (n < 3) outside of groups, not seen in the satellite sample. We have used stellar population models of Bruzual & Charlot with multiple burst, or exponentially declining star formation histories to find that many of the (NUV - r) blue non-grouped galaxies can be explained by a slow (~2 Gyr) decay of star formation, compared to the satellite galaxies. We suggest that taken together, the difference in (NUV - r) colours between samples can be explained by a population of secularly evolving, non-grouped galaxies, where star formation declines slowly. This slow channel is less prevalent in group environments where more rapid quenching can occur

    Epigenetic stability of repressed states involving the histone variant macroH2A revealed by nuclear transfer to Xenopus oocytes

    How various epigenetic mechanisms restrict chromatin plasticity to determine the stability of repressed genes is poorly understood. Nuclear transfer to Xenopus oocytes induces the transcriptional reactivation of previously silenced genes. Recent work suggests that it can be used to analyze the epigenetic stability of repressed states. The notion that the epigenetic state of genes is an important determinant of the efficiency of nuclear reprogramming is supported by the differential reprogramming of given genes from different starting epigenetic configurations. After nuclear transfer, transcription from the inactive X chromosome of post-implantation-derived epiblast stem cells is reactivated. However, the same chromosome is resistant to reactivation when embryonic fibroblasts are used. Here, we discuss different kinds of evidence that link the histone variant macroH2A to the increased stability of repressed states. We focus on developmentally regulated X chromosome inactivation and repression of autosomal pluripotency genes, where macroH2A may help maintain the long-term stability of the differentiated state of somatic cells

    Using Diets to Reveal Overlap and Egg Predation among Benthivorous Fishes in Lake Michigan

    Ecological stability in the Laurentian Great Lakes has been altered by nonindigenous species, such as the Round Goby Neogobius melanostomus and dreissenid mussels, and by declines in native amphipods Diporeia spp. We evaluated whether these changes could influence diet overlap between three benthivorous fishes (Slimy Sculpin Cottus cognatus, Deepwater Sculpin Myoxocephalus thompsonii, and Round Goby) and whether predation on eggs of native species was occurring. We examined diets of fish collected at depths of 69â 128 m in Lake Michigan offshore of Frankfort and Muskegon, Michigan, and Two Rivers and Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, during Januaryâ May 2009 and 2010. Important prey (by dry weight proportion and by percent frequency of occurrence) for Slimy Sculpin were Mysis (0.34; 45%), Diporeia (0.16; 34%), and Limnocalanus macrurus (0.22; 68%); important prey for Deepwater Sculpin were Mysis (0.74; 92%) and Diporeia (0.16; 54%). Round Goby consumed mainly bivalves (i.e., dreissenids: 0.68; 95%) and Mysis (0.15; 37%). The two sculpin species consumed the eggs of Bloaters Coregonus hoyi (Slimy Sculpin: 0.04, 11%; Deepwater Sculpin: 0.02, 7%) and the eggs of Deepwater Sculpin (Slimy Sculpin: 0.03, 13%; Deepwater Sculpin: 0.05, 16%) during Februaryâ May at all sites. Round Goby also consumed eggs of these species but at lower levels (â ¤0.01; <1%). Diet overlap was identified between sculpin species at Frankfort and Sturgeon Bay, suggesting possible interspecific competition, but their diets did not overlap at Two Rivers; diet overlap was never observed between Round Goby and either sculpin species. Given that (1) diet overlap varied by site and (2) diet proportions varied spatially more than temporally, benthivores appear to be exhibiting localized responses to recent ecological changes.     Better living with non-memory led dementia: Protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial of a web-based caregiver educational programme

    Background Non-memory-led dementias such as posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) are low prevalent and often affect individuals under the age of 65. Tailored educational and support resources for caregivers of people living with these dementia phenotypes are scarce and unevenly distributed geographically. Web-based educational programmes are emerging as promising alternatives to improve caregiver self-efficacy and well-being. Here, we present the protocol of a study aiming to assess the feasibility of a co-produced online educational programme for caregivers of people living PCA, PPA and bvFTD: the Better Living with Non-memory-led Dementia programme. Methods A randomised controlled feasibility trial will be conducted on a sample of 30 caregivers of people living with PCA, PPA and bvFTD. Participants will be recruited among members of the support organisation Rare Dementia Support (based at UCL in the UK). The intervention group will be given access to an 8-week co-produced web-based educational programme consisting of 6 modules addressing education about PCA, PPA and bvFTD and support strategies for the person with dementia and for the caregiver. The control group will receive treatment as usual (TAU). Feasibility will be measured through feasibility of recruitment, clinical measurement tools and acceptability. Clinical measures will be used to assess preliminary efficacy and data on completion rates, missing data and variability used to decide on measures to be included in a full-scale trial. Allocation ratio will be 2:1 (intervention:control) stratified by diagnosis. Feasibility of recruitment and acceptability will be assessed. Clinical measures will be administered at baseline and 8-week and 3-month post-randomisation. The control group will be offered access to the intervention at the completion of data collection. Participants will be unblinded, and all measures will be self-reported online. Discussion Online-delivered educational programmes show potential for improving care competency of caregivers and may contribute to overcoming geographical inequalities in local provision of support services. This pilot study will inform a fully powered international trial to determine the effectiveness of Better Living with Non-memory-led Dementia. Trial registration This trial has been registered prospectively on the Clinical Trials Registry on 1st September 2022, registration number NCT05525377

    The XMM Cluster Survey: The Stellar Mass Assembly of Fossil Galaxies

    This paper presents both the result of a search for fossil systems (FSs) within the XMM Cluster Survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the results of a study of the stellar mass assembly and stellar populations of their fossil galaxies. In total, 17 groups and clusters are identified at z < 0.25 with large magnitude gaps between the first and fourth brightest galaxies. All the information necessary to classify these systems as fossils is provided. For both groups and clusters, the total and fractional luminosity of the brightest galaxy is positively correlated with the magnitude gap. The brightest galaxies in FSs (called fossil galaxies) have stellar populations and star formation histories which are similar to normal brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). However, at fixed group/cluster mass, the stellar masses of the fossil galaxies are larger compared to normal BCGs, a fact that holds true over a wide range of group/cluster masses. Moreover, the fossil galaxies are found to contain a significant fraction of the total optical luminosity of the group/cluster within 0.5R200, as much as 85%, compared to the non-fossils, which can have as little as 10%. Our results suggest that FSs formed early and in the highest density regions of the universe and that fossil galaxies represent the end products of galaxy mergers in groups and clusters.
