Health and Safety Events for Latino Families: Collaborating to Create \u3ci\u3eEl Día de los Niños Celebración\u3c/i\u3e
Latino immigrants to rural counties within North Carolina are at an increased risk for experiencing injury, health complications, and chronic illness. This is due largely to the fact that many new immigrants arrive with limited knowledge of the health and safety risks that are present in their communities. To reduce the incidence of injury and health complications, programs must be developed to increase local awareness of these risks. This article outlines the collaborative efforts of one rural North Carolina community to develop and implement a community-based health and safety event for Latino families
Enhanced reaction kinetics in biological cells
The cell cytoskeleton is a striking example of "active" medium driven
out-of-equilibrium by ATP hydrolysis. Such activity has been shown recently to
have a spectacular impact on the mechanical and rheological properties of the
cellular medium, as well as on its transport properties : a generic tracer
particle freely diffuses as in a standard equilibrium medium, but also
intermittently binds with random interaction times to motor proteins, which
perform active ballistic excursions along cytoskeletal filaments. Here, we
propose for the first time an analytical model of transport limited reactions
in active media, and show quantitatively how active transport can enhance
reactivity for large enough tracers like vesicles. We derive analytically the
average interaction time with motor proteins which optimizes the reaction rate,
and reveal remarkable universal features of the optimal configuration. We
discuss why active transport may be beneficial in various biological examples:
cell cytoskeleton, membranes and lamellipodia, and tubular structures like

Variable stars in the Fornax dSph Galaxy. II. Pulsating stars below the horizontal branch
We have carried out an intensive survey of the northern region of the Fornax
dwarf spheroidal galaxy with the aim of detecting the galaxy's short--period
pulsating stars (P<0.25 days). Observations collected over three consecutive
nights with the Wide Field Imager of the 2.2m MPI telescope at ESO allowed us
to detect 85 high-amplitude (0.20-1.00 mag in B-light) variable stars with
periods in the range from 0.046 to 0.126 days, similar to SX Phoenicis stars in
Galactic metal-poor stellar populations. The plots of the observed periods vs.
the B and V magnitudes show a dispersion largely exceeding the observational
errors. To disentangle the matter, we separated the first-overtone from the
fundamental-mode pulsators and tentatively identified a group of subluminous
variables, about 0.35 mag fainter than the others. Their nature as either
metal-poor intermediate-age stars or stars formed by the merging of close
binary systems is discussed. The rich sample of the Fornax variables also led
us to reconstruct the Period-Luminosity relation for short-period pulsating
stars. An excellent linear fit, M(V)=-1.83(+/-0.08)-3.65(+/-0.07) log P(fund),
was obtained using 153 Delta Scuti and SX Phoenicis stars in a number of

Revisiting visitors for modular extension of executable DSMLs
Executable Domain-Specific Modeling Languages (xDSMLs) are typically defined by metamodels that specify their abstract syntax, and model interpreters or compilers that define their execution semantics. To face the proliferation of xDSMLs in many domains, it is important to provide language engineering facilities for opportunistic reuse, extension, and customization of existing xDSMLs to ease the definition of new ones. Current approaches to language reuse either require to anticipate reuse, make use of advanced features that are not widely available in programming languages, or are not directly applicable to metamodel-based xDSMLs. In this paper, we propose a new language implementation pattern, named Revisitor, that enables independent extensibility of the syntax and semantics of metamodel-based xDSMLs with incremental compilation and without anticipation. We seamlessly implement our approach alongside the compilation chain of the Eclipse Modeling Framework, thereby demonstrating that it is directly and broadly applicable in various modeling environments. We show how it can be employed to incrementally extend both the syntax and semantics of the fUML language without requiring anticipation or re-compilation of existing code, and with acceptable performance penalty compared to classical handmade visitors
Progress in the development of a biopesticide for the structural treatment of grain stores
Chemical insecticides are used to protect stored grain from infestation by stored product insects and mites. In the UK only a limited number of products are available for application and there are concerns about safety, pest resistance and environmental impact of these conventional pesticides. Biological control offers an alternative to the use of chemical insecticides. The potential for biological control of storage pests in the UK using an insect-specific fungus, Beauveria bassiana, to treat the structure of the stores, has previously been established. However, this study also highlighted areas where improvements were needed; specifically to improve the uptake of the fungal conidia by the pests and to improve their germination and penetration into the pests. In addition it was necessary to ensure that potential formulations had a good shelf-life and to develop a mass production method to consistently produce high quality fungal conidia. A four year project has recently been completed examining these areas in detail. The work has concentrated on two different fungal isolates of B. bassiana, both of which were found from insects in UK grain stores. Optimisation of production methods, formulation and delivery systems has resulted in prototype formulations that exhibit good viability over periods up to one year and that have good efficacy against a range of storage insect pests under conditions that are likely to be found in UK grain stores. Pilot scale trials using three species of stored product beetle have shown that significant levels of control can be achieved. An overview of the key findings is presented. The study has made a significant contribution to the development of a biopesticide as a structural treatment for grain storage areas in the UK.Keywords: Biological control; Beauveria bassiana; Oryzaephilus surinamensis; Structural treatment; Biopesticid
EEG-based effective connectivity distinguishes between unresponsive states with and without report of conscious experience and correlates with brain complexity
Objective methods for distinguishing conscious from unconscious states in humans are of key importance for clinical evaluation of general anesthesia and patients with disorders or consciousness. Here, we test the generalizability of a DTF-based algorithm - a measure of effective connectivity - as an objective measure of conscious experience during anesthesia and correlate it with a well-tested index of consciousness: the Perturbational Complexity Index (PCI). We reanalyzed EEG data from an experimental study in which 18 healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to one of three types of general anesthesia: propofol, xenon, and ketamine. EEG was recorded before and during anesthesia, and DTF was calculated from every 1-second segment of the EEG data to quantify the effective connectivity between channel pairs. This was used to classify the state of each participant as either conscious or unconscious, and the classifications were compared with the participant’s delayed report of experience, and the PCI. The algorithm was more likely to classify participants as conscious in the awake state than during propofol and xenon anesthesia (p0.05). Furthermore, the DTF-based confidence of being classified as conscious was highly correlated with PCI (r2=0.48, p<0.05). These results provide further support for the notion that effective connectivity measured between EEG electrodes can be used to distinguish between conscious and unconscious states in humans
Weak Interaction Studies with 6He
The 6He nucleus is an ideal candidate to study the weak interaction. To this
end we have built a high-intensity source of 6He delivering ~10^10 atoms/s to
experiments. Taking full advantage of that available intensity we have
performed a high-precision measurement of the 6He half-life that directly
probes the axial part of the nuclear Hamiltonian. Currently, we are preparing a
measurement of the beta-neutrino angular correlation in 6He beta decay that
will allow to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model in the form of

UKIDSS detections of cool brown dwarfs - proper motions of 14 known T5 dwarfs and discovery of three new T5.5-T6 dwarfs
AIMS: We contribute to improving the census of cool brown dwarfs (late-T and
Y dwarfs) in the immediate solar neighbourhood. METHODS: By combining
near-infrared (NIR) data of UKIDSS with mid-infrared WISE and other available
NIR (2MASS) and red optical (SDSS -band) multi-epoch data we detect high
proper motion (HPM) objects with colours typical of late spectral types
(T5). We use NIR low-resolution spectroscopy for the classification of new
candidates. RESULTS: We determined new proper motions for 14 known T5.5-Y0
dwarfs, many of them being significantly (2-10 times) more accurate than
previous ones. We detected three new candidates, ULAS J0954+0623, ULAS
J1152+0359, and ULAS J1204-0150, by their HPMs and colours. Using previously
published and new UKIDSS positions of the known nearby T8 dwarf WISE J0254+0223
we improved its trigonometric parallax to 16520 mas. For the three new
objects we obtained NIR spectroscopic follow-up with LBT/LUCIFER classifying
them as T5.5 and T6 dwarfs. With their estimated spectroscopic distances of
about 25-30 pc, their proper motions of about 430-650 mas/yr lead to tangential
velocities of about 50-80 km/s typical of the Galactic thin disk population.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, plus 3 pages with 5 tables (online material),
