    Traces in monoidal categories

The main result of this paper is the construction of a trace and a trace pairing for endomorphisms satisfying suitable conditions in a monoidal category. This construction is a common generalization of the trace for endomorphisms of dualizable ob jects in a balanced monoidal category and the trace of nuclear operators on a locally convex topological vector space with the approximation property

An enrichment of KK-theory over the category of symmetric spectra

In [6] Higson showed that the formal properties of the Kasparov KK-theory groups are best understood if one regards KK(A,B) for separable C*-algebras A,B as the morphism set of a category KK. In category language the composition and exterior KKproduct give KK the structure of a symmetric monoidal category which is enriched over abelian groups. We show that the enrichment of KK can be lifted to an enrichment over the category of symmetric spectra

Suppression of spin-exchange relaxation in tilted magnetic fields within the geophysical range

We present a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the relaxation of spin coherence due to the spin-exchange mechanism arising in the electronic ground states of alkali-metal vapor atoms. As opposed to the well-explored formation of a stretched state in a longitudinal geometry (magnetic field parallel to the laser propagation direction) we employ adapted hyperfine-selective optical pumping in order to suppress spin-exchange relaxation. By comparing measurements of the intrinsic relaxation rate of the spin coherence in the ground state of cesium atoms with detailed density-matrix simulations we show that the relaxation due to spin-exchange collisions can be reduced substantially even in a tilted magnetic field of geomagnetic strength, the major application case of scalar magnetic surveying. This explains the observed striking improvement in sensitivity and further deepens the understanding of the light- narrowed Mx magnetometer, which was presented recently. Additionally, new avenues for investigating the dynamics in alkali-metal atoms governed by the spin-exchange interaction and interacting with arbitrary external fields open up

The quantum light source consists of an InGaAs QD which is deterministically integrated within a monolithic microlens with a distributed Bragg reflector as back-side mirror, which is triggered using the frequency-doubled emission of a mode-locked vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (ML-VECSEL). The utilized compact and stable laser system allows us to excite the single-QD microlens at a wavelength of 508 nm with a pulse repetition rate close to 500 MHz at a pulse width of 4.2 ps. Probing the photon statistics of the emission from a single QD state at saturation, we demonstrate single-photon emission of the QD-microlens chip with g(2)(0) < 0.03 at a record-high single-photon flux of (143 ± 16) MHz collected by the first lens of the detection system. Our approach is fully compatible with resonant excitation schemes using wavelength tunable ML-VECSELs, which will optimize the quantum optical properties of the single-photon emission in terms of photon indistinguishability.BMBF, 03V0630, Entwicklung einer Halbleiterbasierten Einzelphotonenquelle für die Quanteninformationstechnologie (QSOURCE)DFG, 43659573, SFB 787: Halbleiter - Nanophotonik: Materialien, Modelle, BauelementeDFG, 192635911, GRK 1782: Funktionalisierung von HalbleiternDFG, 223848855, SFB 1083: Struktur und Dynamik innerer Grenzfläche

High-quality single InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot growth on a CMOS-compatible silicon substrate for quantum photonic applications

We present the direct heteroepitaxial growth of high-quality InGaAs quantum dots on silicon, enabling scalable, cost-effective quantum photonics devices compatible with CMOS technology. GaAs heterostructures are grown on silicon via a GaP buffer and defect-reducing layers. These epitaxial quantum dots exhibit optical properties akin to those on traditional GaAs substrates, promising vast potential for the heteroepitaxy approach. They demonstrate strong multi-photon suppression with g(2)(τ)=(3.7±0.2)×10−2g^{(2)}(\tau)=(3.7\pm 0.2) \times 10^{-2} and high photon indistinguishability V=(66±19)V=(66\pm 19)% under non-resonance excitation. We achieve up to (18±118\pm 1)% photon extraction efficiency with a backside distributed Bragg mirror, marking a crucial step toward silicon-based quantum nanophotonics

Pro-adrenomedullin to predict severity and outcome in community-acquired pneumonia [ISRCTN04176397]

INTRODUCTION: Pro-adrenomedullin (proADM) is helpful for individual risk assessment and outcome prediction in sepsis. A major cause of sepsis is community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). The aim of this study was to investigate the value of proADM levels for severity assessment and outcome prediction in CAP. METHODS: Data from 302 patients admitted to the emergency department with CAP were included in a prospective observational study. Procalcitonin, C-reactive protein levels, leukocyte count, clinical variables and the pneumonia severity index (PSI) were measured. ProADM levels were measured with a new sandwich immunoassay for mid regional ProADM (MR-proADM, Brahms AG, Hennigsdorf/Berlin, Germany). RESULTS: ProADM levels, in contrast to C-reactive protein and leukocyte count, increased with increasing severity of CAP, classified according to the PSI score (ANOVA, p < 0.001). In patients who died during follow-up, proADM levels on admission were significantly higher compared to levels in survivors (2.1 (1.5 to 3.0) versus 1.0 (0.6 to 1.6) nmol/l, p < 0.001). In a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis for survival, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) for proADM was 0.76 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.71–0.81), which was significantly higher compared to procalcitonin (p = 0.004), C-reactive protein (p < 0.001) and total leukocyte count (p = 0.001) and similar to the AUC of the PSI (0.73, p = 0.54). A clinical model including the PSI and proADM increased the prognostic accuracy to predict failure compared to a model relying on the PSI alone (AUC, 0.77 (0.70 to 0.84), p = 0.03). CONCLUSION: ProADM, as a novel biomarker, is a useful tool for the risk stratification of patients with CAP
