    Invasive fish disrupt host-pathogen dynamics leading to amphibian declines

    Sudden disease outbreaks may not necessarily reflect a recent pathogen introduction but may instead arise from the disruption of a host-pathogen equilibrium. Together with invasive species, emerging pathogens pose significant threats to biodiversity. The dynamics of each stressor have been studied separately, yet rarely when interacting. Using a 40-year dataset, we tested the hypothesis that the introduction of an invasive fish leads to such a disruption, manifested by ranavirosis outbreaks on amphibian hosts. MCP sequencing revealed the historical presence of two major Ranavirus clades, with low prevalence. The introduction of fish was not followed by the emergence of new viruses, but rather by an increase in the prevalence of the strains already present, fitting the ‘endemic pathogen hypothesis’. Two decades after the first die-offs, one amphibian species persists in extremely low numbers, but Ranavirus prevalence is closer to the enzootic phase that preceded the outbreaks. Models show that host population collapse and lack of recovery are best explained by the concerted interaction of Ranavirus and invasive fish. We provide robust evidence that invasive species can impact naïve communities by disrupting the host-pathogen balance, exacerbating health threats.     Simplified Models for LHC New Physics Searches

    This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We also comment on future developments that may be useful as more data is gathered and analyzed by the experiments.Comment: 40 pages, 2 figures.     Presynaptic Activity of an Isolated Fraction from Rhinella schneideri Poison

    Purpose: Rhinella schneideri is a toad found in many regions of the South America. The poison of the glands has cardiotoxic effect in animals and neuromuscular effects in mice and avian preparation. The purpose of this work was to identify the toxin responsible for the neuromuscular effect in avian and mice neuromuscular preparation. Methods: The methanolic extract from R. schneideri poison was fractioned by reversed phase HPLC. The purity and molecular mass were determined by LC/MS mass spectrometry. Chick biventer cervicis and mouse phrenic-nerve diaphragm were used as neuromuscular preparations to identify the toxin. Results: The purification resulted in 32 fractions, which 4 of them were active in neuromuscular preparation. The toxin of fraction 20 were chosen for better reproducibility of the whole extract activity and its molecular mass was 730.6 Da. The toxin produced facilitation of the muscle contraction followed by a complete neuromuscular blockade in chick biventer cervicis preparation in 90 min without interfering with the exogenous response to ACh and KCl. The quantal content was increased from 128 ± 13 (control) to 216 ± 44 (after 5 min and sustained until 60 min) in the presence of the toxin. Conclusion: In conclusion, our results demonstrated that the neuromuscular action of the poison of Rhinella schneideri is a multitoxin effect. More, the present work first isolated a 730.6 Da toxin that better represent the whole poison neuromuscular effect, to which is attributed a presynaptic action in avian and mouse neuromuscular preparation

    Host–Guest Chemistry in Boron Nitride Nanotubes: Interactions with Polyoxometalates and Mechanism of Encapsulation

    Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are an emerging class of molecular container offering new functionalities and possibilities for studying molecules at the nanoscale. Herein, BNNTs are demonstrated as highly effective nanocontainers for polyoxometalate (POM) molecules. The encapsulation of POMs within BNNTs occurs spontaneously at room temperature from an aqueous solution, leading to the self-assembly of a POM@BNNT host−guest system. Analysis of the interactions between the host-nanotube and guest-molecule indicate that Lewis acid−base interactions between W=O groups of the POM (base) and B-atoms of the BNNT lattice (acid) likely play a major role in driving POM encapsulation, with photoactivated electron transfer from BNNTs to POMs in solution also contributing to the process. The transparent nature of the BNNT nanocontainer allows extensive investigation of the guest-molecules by photoluminescence, Raman, UV−vis absorption, and EPR spectroscopies. These studies revealed considerable energy and electron transfer processes between BNNTs and POMs, likely mediated via defect energy states of the BNNTs and resulting in the quenching of BNNT photoluminescence at room temperature, the emergence of new photoluminescence emissions at cryogenic temperatures (<100 K), a photochromic response, and paramagnetic signals from guest-POMs. These phenomena offer a fresh perspective on host−guest interactions at the nanoscale and open pathways for harvesting the functional properties of these hybrid systems

    International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force consensus proposal: Medical treatment of canine epilepsy in Europe

    In Europe, the number of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) licensed for dogs has grown considerably over the last years. Nevertheless, the same questions remain, which include, 1) when to start treatment, 2) which drug is best used initially, 3) which adjunctive AED can be advised if treatment with the initial drug is unsatisfactory, and 4) when treatment changes should be considered. In this consensus proposal, an overview is given on the aim of AED treatment, when to start long-term treatment in canine epilepsy and which veterinary AEDs are currently in use for dogs. The consensus proposal for drug treatment protocols, 1) is based on current published evidence-based literature, 2) considers the current legal framework of the cascade regulation for the prescription of veterinary drugs in Europe, and 3) reflects the authors’ experience. With this paper it is aimed to provide a consensus for the management of canine idiopathic epilepsy. Furthermore, for the management of structural epilepsy AEDs are inevitable in addition to treating the underlying cause, if possible
