    A search for rapid optical variability in radio-quiet quasars

    The detection of rapid variability on a time-scale of hours in radio-quiet quasars (RQQSOs) could be a powerful discriminator between starburst, accretion disc and relativistic jet models of these sources. This paper contains an account of a dedicated search for rapid optical variability in RQQSOs. The technique used differential photometry between the RQQSO and stars in the same field of view of the CCD. The 23 RQQSOs that were observed all have high luminosities (-27 1. The total amount of observation time was about 60 hours and these observations are part of an ongoing programme, started in September 1990, to search for rapid variability in RQQSOs. No evidence for short-term variability greater than about 0.1 magnitudes was detected in any of the 23 sources, however long-term variability was recorded for the radio-quiet quasar PG 2112+059. The finding charts are included here because they identify the RQQSO and the reference stars used in the photometry, and hence are available for use by other observers.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&AS. 10 pages, 3 figures.     Meta-model Pruning

    Large and complex meta-models such as those of Uml and its profiles are growing due to modelling and inter-operability needs of numerous\ud stakeholders. The complexity of such meta-models has led to coining\ud of the term meta-muddle. Individual users often exercise only a small\ud view of a meta-muddle for tasks ranging from model creation to construction\ud of model transformations. What is the effective meta-model that represents\ud this view? We present a flexible meta-model pruning algorithm and\ud tool to extract effective meta-models from a meta-muddle. We use\ud the notion of model typing for meta-models to verify that the algorithm\ud generates a super-type of the large meta-model representing the meta-muddle.\ud This implies that all programs written using the effective meta-model\ud will work for the meta-muddle hence preserving backward compatibility.\ud All instances of the effective meta-model are also instances of the\ud meta-muddle. We illustrate how pruning the original Uml metamodel\ud produces different effective meta-models

    Pathogenicity of Botryosphaeria species isolated from declining grapevines in sub tropical regions of Eastern Australia

    From 2002 to 2004, vines from 11 vineyards in the Hunter Valley region and from 4 vineyards in Mudgee (New South Wales, Australia) were inspected for foliar and wood symptoms of Eutypa dieback and Botryosphaeria canker. Eutypa lata was not isolated, however species of Botryosphaeria were frequently isolated from dead and declining spurs, cordons and trunks. Two species conforming to the anamorphs of Diplodia and Fusicoccum were isolated. Cultures on PDA producing a yellow pigment, and hyaline aseptate conidia (14-23.5 x 8-13 μm in size) were identified as B. lutea. Cultures with dark brown, 1-septate, ornamented conidia (15-25 x 8-14 μm in size) at maturity were identified as B. obtusa. Pathogenicity tests were conducted on detached green shoots, detached one-year-old canes and glasshouse-grown grapevines. In all situations, disease symptoms were reproduced and Koch’s postulates were fulfilled. The results demonstrate the potential of B. obtusa and B. lutea as primary pathogens of Vitis vinifera.

    Steel, JC ORCiD: 0000-0003-3608-7542Intravitreal injection of recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) might be an alternative approach for retinal gene therapy for certain applications. Although the jelly-like substance consists mainly of water, anti-viral antibodies against various viruses such as HIV or HSV have been observed in the human vitreous and anti-AAV neutralising antibodies (NAbs) in rhesus macaque vitreous have also been detected. In this study, the human vitreous humour was obtained from 70 post mortem unpaired eye cups and 10 paired eye cups from the Queensland Eye Bank. The transduction efficiency of 1-3 · 108 vcg of recombinant AAV-2, -5, -6 and -8 expressing secreted nanoluciferase was measured following transduction of ARPE-19 and Cos-7 cells at vitreous humour dilutions from 1:2 to 1:10 000. At vitreous humour dilution of 1:2, a reduction in transduction of over 50% was observed for AAV2 in 50.5% of samples and for AAV6 in 66.2% of samples. Only 23.2% of tested samples showed similar reduction in transduction efficiency for AAV5, and for AAV8 only 2.5% of samples inhibited transduction by 50% at 1:2 dilution. Differences in serum antibody levels have been previously observed in a similar Australian population, but low transduction inhibition at vitreous humour dilutions of 1:100 suggests that the concentration of NAbs within the vitreous humour is lower than in human serum. In addition, this study also reported an increase in transduction efficiency for AAV8 at highest vitreous humour concentrations, supporting previous reports that human albumin can increase AAV transduction but only in some serotypes

    Stimulated Raman spin coherence and spin-flip induced hole burning in charged GaAs quantum dots

    High-resolution spectral hole burning (SHB) in coherent nondegenerate differential transmission spectroscopy discloses spin-trion dynamics in an ensemble of negatively charged quantum dots. In the Voigt geometry, stimulated Raman spin coherence gives rise to Stokes and anti-Stokes sidebands on top of the trion spectral hole. The prominent feature of an extremely narrow spike at zero detuning arises from spin population pulsation dynamics. These SHB features confirm coherent electron spin dynamics in charged dots, and the linewidths reveal spin spectral diffusion processes.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Systematic effects and a new determination of the primordial abundance of 4He and dY/dZ from observations of blue compact galaxies

    We use spectroscopic observations of a sample of 82 HII regions in 76 blue compact galaxies to determine the primordial helium abundance Yp and the slope dY/dZ from the Y-O/H linear regression. To improve the accuracy of the dY/dZ measurement, we have included new spectrophotometric observations of 33 HII regions which span a large metallicity range, with oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H) varying between 7.43 and 8.30 (Zsun/30<Z<Zsun/4). For a subsample of 7 HII regions, we derive the He mass fraction taking into account known systematic effects, including collisional and fluorescent enhancements of HeI emission lines, collisional excitation of hydrogen emission, underlying stellar HeI absorption and the difference between the temperatures Te(HeII) in the He^+ zone and Te(OIII) derived from the collisionally excited [OIII] lines. We find that the net result of all the systematic effects combined is small, changing the He mass fraction by less than 0.6%. By extrapolating the Y vs. O/H linear regression to O/H=0 for 7 HII regions of this subsample, we obtain Yp=0.2421+/-0.0021 and dY/dO=5.7+/-1.8, which corresponds to dY/dZ=3.7+/-1.2, assuming the oxygen mass fraction to be O=0.66Z. In the framework of the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis theory, this Yp corresponds to Omega_b h^2 = 0.012^+0.003_-0.002, where h is the Hubble constant in units of 100 km/s/Mpc. This is smaller at the 2sigma level than the value obtained from recent deuterium abundance and microwave background radiation measurements. The linear regression slope dY/dO=4.3+/-0.7 (corresponding to dY/dZ=2.8+/-0.5) for the whole sample of 82 HII regions is similar to that derived for the subsample of 7 HII regions, although it has a considerably smaller uncertainty.Comment: 53 pages, 3 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
