    Perceptions locales de la manifestation des changements climatiques et mesures d’adaptation dans la gestion de la fertilitĂ© des sols dans la Commune de Banikoara au Nord- BĂ©nin

    Objectifs: L’étude a pour objectif d’analyser les dĂ©terminants biophysiques des changements climatiques et les mesures d’adaptations dĂ©veloppĂ©es par les producteurs notamment dans la gestion de la fertilitĂ© des sols au Nord-BĂ©nin.MĂ©thodologie et RĂ©sultats: Les donnĂ©es ont Ă©tĂ© collectĂ©es auprĂšs de focus groupes d’effectif variant de 6 à 12 personnes rĂ©alisĂ©s dans chacun des dix arrondissements de la Commune de Banikoara. Une enquĂȘte auprĂšs de 986 producteurs a Ă©tĂ© rĂ©alisĂ©e sur les perceptions, les mesures d’adaptation et les dĂ©terminants socio-Ă©conomiques des changements climatiques. Les donnĂ©es sont analysĂ©es avec le test d’indĂ©pendance de ΧÂČ, l’analyse factorielle des correspondances suivie ou non de la classification ascendante hiĂ©rarchique. Ensuite une rĂ©gression logistique polychotomique ordinale a Ă©tĂ© utilisĂ©e en vue de modĂ©liser la relation entre les dĂ©terminants socio-Ă©conomiques des producteurs enquĂȘtĂ©s et le niveau de fertilitĂ© de leur sol. Les rĂ©sultats ont permis d’identifier 24 perceptions liĂ©es aux changements climatiques et 63 stratĂ©gies d’adaptation. Les stratĂ©gies d’adaptation dĂ©pendaient des niveaux de prospĂ©ritĂ© mais n’avaient pas de relation avec l’appartenance aux classes d’ñges. Les dĂ©terminants socioĂ©conomiques les plus liĂ©s Ă  la fertilitĂ© des sols sont la location de parcelles, le nombre de charrues et le nombre de charrettes.Conclusion et Application des RĂ©sultats: L’amĂ©lioration du niveau de prospĂ©ritĂ© des producteurs est un élĂ©ment clĂ© de leur adaptation aux changements climatiques. La possession de charrues, de charrettes et la disponibilitĂ© des terres sont les dĂ©terminants socio-Ă©conomiques qui expliquent au mieux l’adaptation des producteurs aux changements climatiques dans la gestion de la fertilitĂ© des sols.Local perceptions of manifestation of climate change and adaptation measures in the management of soil fertility in the Municipality of Banikoara in North BeninObjectives: The study aims to analyze the biophysical determinants of climate change and adaptation measures developed by such producers in the management of soil fertility in northern Benin.Methodology and Results: Data were collected from focus groups of staff ranging from 6 to 12 people made in each of the ten districts of the Municipality of Banikoara. A survey of 986 farmers was conducted on perceptions, adaptation and socio-economic determinants of climate change. The data were analyzed with the chi-square test of independence, the correspondence analysis or not followed by the hierarchical clustering. Then polychotomous ordinal logistic regression was used to model the relationship between socio-economic determinants of producers surveyed and the fertility of their soil. The results identified 24 perceptions related to climate change and adaptation strategies 63. Adaptation strategies depended on the levels of prosperity but had no relationship with the membership age groups. Socio-economic determinants related to most soil fertility include the rental plots, the number of plows and the number of carts.Conclusion and Application of Results: Improving the level of prosperity of the producers is a key element of their adaptation to climate change. Possession of plows, carts and land availability are the socioeconomic determinants that explain the adaptation of the best producers to climate change in the management of soil fertilit

    Scoping review on vector-borne diseases in urban areas : transmission dynamics, vectorial capacity and co-infection

    BACKGROUND: Transmission dynamics, vectorial capacity, and co-infections have substantial impacts on vector-borne diseases (VBDs) affecting urban and suburban populations. Reviewing key factors can provide insight into priority research areas and offer suggestions for potential interventions. MAIN BODY: Through a scoping review, we identify knowledge gaps on transmission dynamics, vectorial capacity, and co-infections regarding VBDs in urban areas. Peer-reviewed and grey literature published between 2000 and 2016 was searched. We screened abstracts and full texts to select studies. Using an extraction grid, we retrieved general data, results, lessons learned and recommendations, future research avenues, and practice implications. We classified studies by VBD and country/continent and identified relevant knowledge gaps. Of 773 articles selected for full-text screening, 50 were included in the review: 23 based on research in the Americas, 15 in Asia, 10 in Africa, and one each in Europe and Australia. The largest body of evidence concerning VBD epidemiology in urban areas concerned dengue and malaria. Other arboviruses covered included chikungunya and West Nile virus, other parasitic diseases such as leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis, and bacterial rickettsiosis and plague. Most articles retrieved in our review combined transmission dynamics and vectorial capacity; only two combined transmission dynamics and co-infection. The review identified significant knowledge gaps on the role of asymptomatic individuals, the effects of co-infection and other host factors, and the impacts of climatic, environmental, and socioeconomic factors on VBD transmission in urban areas. Limitations included the trade-off from narrowing the search strategy (missing out on classical modelling studies), a lack of studies on co-infections, most studies being only descriptive, and few offering concrete public health recommendations. More research is needed on transmission risk in homes and workplaces, given increasingly dynamic and mobile populations. The lack of studies on co-infection hampers monitoring of infections transmitted by the same vector. CONCLUSIONS: Strengthening VBD surveillance and control, particularly in asymptomatic cases and mobile populations, as well as using early warning tools to predict increasing transmission, were key strategies identified for public health policy and practice

    In Vitro and In Vivo Investigation of the Efficacy of Arylimidamide DB1831 and Its Mesylated Salt Form - DB1965 - against Trypanosoma cruzi Infection

    Chagas disease is caused by infection with the intracellular protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. At present, nifurtimox and benznidazole, both compounds developed empirically over four decades ago, represent the chemotherapeutic arsenal for treating this highly neglected disease. However, both drugs present variable efficacy depending on the geographical area and the occurrence of natural resistance, and are poorly effective against the later chronic stage. As a part of a search for new therapeutic opportunities to treat chagasic patients, pre-clinical studies were performed to characterize the activity of a novel arylimidamide (AIA - DB1831 (hydrochloride salt) and DB1965 (mesylate salt)) against T.cruzi. These AIAs displayed a high trypanocidal effect in vitro against both relevant forms in mammalian hosts, exhibiting a high selectivity index and a very high efficacy (IC50 value/48 h of 5–40 nM) against intracellular parasites. DB1965 shows high activity in vivo in acute experimental models (mouse) of T.cruzi, showing a similar effect to benznidazole (Bz) when compared under a scheme of 10 daily consecutive doses with 12.5 mg/kg. Although no parasitological cure was observed after treating with 20 daily consecutive doses, a combined dosage of DB1965 (5 mg/kg) with Bz (50 mg/kg) resulted in parasitaemia clearance and 100% animal survival. In summary, our present data confirmed that aryimidamides represent promising new chemical entities against T.cruzi in therapeutic schemes using the AIA alone or in combination with other drugs, like benznidazole

    Vitamin D in the general population of young adults with autism in the Faroe Islands

    Vitamin D deficiency has been proposed as a possible risk factor for developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD). 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) levels were examined in a cross-sectional population-based study in the Faroe Islands. The case group consisting of a total population cohort of 40 individuals with ASD (aged 15–24 years) had significantly lower 25(OH)D3 than their 62 typically-developing siblings and their 77 parents, and also significantly lower than 40 healthy age and gender matched comparisons. There was a trend for males having lower 25(OH)D3 than females. Effects of age, month/season of birth, IQ, various subcategories of ASD and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule score were also investigated, however, no association was found. The very low 25(OH)D3 in the ASD group suggests some underlying pathogenic mechanism

    Transcription of toll-like receptors 2, 3, 4 and 9, FoxP3 and Th17 cytokines in a susceptible experimental model of canine Leishmania infantum infection

    Canine leishmaniosis (CanL) due to Leishmania infantum is a chronic zoonotic systemic disease resulting from complex interactions between protozoa and the canine immune system. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are essential components of the innate immune system and facilitate the early detection of many infections. However, the role of TLRs in CanL remains unknown and information describing TLR transcription during infection is extremely scarce. The aim of this research project was to investigate the impact of L. infantum infection on canine TLR transcription using a susceptible model. The objectives of this study were to evaluate transcription of TLRs 2, 3, 4 and 9 by means of quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in skin, spleen, lymph node and liver in the presence or absence of experimental L. infantum infection in Beagle dogs. These findings were compared with clinical and serological data, parasite densities in infected tissues and transcription of IL-17, IL-22 and FoxP3 in different tissues in non-infected dogs (n = 10), and at six months (n = 24) and 15 months (n = 7) post infection. Results revealed significant down regulation of transcription with disease progression in lymph node samples for TLR3, TLR4, TLR9, IL-17, IL-22 and FoxP3. In spleen samples, significant down regulation of transcription was seen in TLR4 and IL-22 when both infected groups were compared with controls. In liver samples, down regulation of transcription was evident with disease progression for IL-22. In the skin, upregulation was seen only for TLR9 and FoxP3 in the early stages of infection. Subtle changes or down regulation in TLR transcription, Th17 cytokines and FoxP3 are indicative of the silent establishment of infection that Leishmania is renowned for. These observations provide new insights about TLR transcription, Th17 cytokines and Foxp3 in the liver, spleen, lymph node and skin in CanL and highlight possible markers of disease susceptibility in this model

    Nitrogen-limited mangrove ecosystems conserve N through dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium

    Earlier observations in mangrove sediments of Goa, India have shown denitrification to be a major pathway for N loss1. However, percentage of total nitrate transformed through complete denitrification accounted for <0–72% of the pore water nitrate reduced. Here, we show that up to 99% of nitrate removal in mangrove sediments is routed through dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). The DNRA process was 2x higher at the relatively pristine site Tuvem compared to the anthropogenically-influenced Divar mangrove ecosystem. In systems receiving low extraneous nutrient inputs, this mechanism effectively conserves and re-circulates N minimizing nutrient loss that would otherwise occur through denitrification. In a global context, the occurrence of DNRA in mangroves has important implications for maintaining N levels and sustaining ecosystem productivity. For the first time, this study also highlights the significance of DNRA in buffering the climate by modulating the production of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide

    Nocturnal blood pressure fall as predictor of diabetic nephropathy in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hypertensive patients with reduced blood pressure fall (BPF) at night are at higher risk of cardiovascular events (CVE).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We evaluated in hypertensive diabetic patients, if a reduced nocturnal BPF can precedes the development of diabetic nephropathy (DN). We followed 70 patients with normal urinary albumin excretion (UAE) for two years. We performed 24-hours ambulatory BP monitoring in baseline and at the end of the study.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Fourteen (20%) patients (GI) developed DN (N = 11) and/or CVE (n = 4). Compared to the remaining 56 patients (GII) in baseline, GI had similar diurnal systolic (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP), but higher nocturnal SBP (138 ± 15 vs 129 ± 16 mmHg; p < 0.05) and DBP (83 ± 12 vs 75 ± 11 mmHg; p < 0,05). Basal nocturnal SBP correlated with occurrence of DN and CVE (R = 0.26; P < 0.05) and with UAE at the end of the study (r = 0.3; p < 0.05). Basal BPF (%) correlated with final UAE (r = -0.31; p < 0.05). In patients who developed DN, reductions occurred in nocturnal systolic BPF (12 ± 5 vs 3 ± 6%, p < 0,01) and diastolic BPF (15 ± 8 vs 4 ± 10%, p < 0,01) while no changes were observed in diurnal SBP (153 ± 17 vs 156 ± 16 mmHg, NS) and DBP (91 ± 9 vs 90 ± 7 mmHg, NS). Patients with final UAE < 20 Όg/min, had no changes in nocturnal and diurnal BP.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results suggests that elevations in nocturnal BP precedes DN and increases the risk to develop CVE in hypertensive patients with T2DM.</p
