Infrared laser pulse triggers increased singlet oxygen production in tumour cells
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a technique developed to treat the ever-increasing global incidence of cancer. This technique utilises singlet oxygen (1O2) generation via a laser excited photosensitiser (PS) to kill cancer cells. However, prolonged sensitivity to intensive light (6–8 weeks for lung cancer), relatively low tissue penetration by activating light (630 nm up to 4 mm), and the cost of PS administration can limit progressive PDT applications. The development of quantum-dot laser diodes emitting in the highest absorption region (1268 nm) of triplet oxygen (3O2) presents the possibility of inducing apoptosis in tumour cells through direct 3O2 → 1O2 transition. Here we demonstrate that a single laser pulse triggers dose-dependent 1O2 generation in both normal keratinocytes and tumour cells and show that tumour cells yield the highest 1O2 far beyond the initial laser pulse exposure. Our modelling and experimental results support the development of direct infrared (IR) laser-induced tumour treatment as a promising approach in tumour PDT
The Effect of Human Insect Repellents on Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenne) Growth and Recovery
Turfgrass damage has been observed from misapplications of human insect repellents. Minimal research has been conducted to determine the cause of the damage. Greenhouse research trials were initiated in November 2016 to survey various human insect repellents on turfgrass growth and recovery. Insect repellents resulted in a wide range of damage. No common trend was observed, although the research trial shows possible repellents to be used around turfgrass that will minimize turfgrass injury
Improved Limits on Spin-Dependent WIMP-Proton Interactions from a Two Liter CFI Bubble Chamber
Data from the operation of a bubble chamber filled with 3.5 kg of CFI
in a shallow underground site are reported. An analysis of ultrasound signals
accompanying bubble nucleations confirms that alpha decays generate a
significantly louder acoustic emission than single nuclear recoils, leading to
an efficient background discrimination. Three dark matter candidate events were
observed during an effective exposure of 28.1 kg-day, consistent with a neutron
background. This observation provides the strongest direct detection constraint
to date on WIMP-proton spin-dependent scattering for WIMP masses

Quantitative and Qualitative Assessment of Aquatic Macroinvertebrate in Streams and Springs of Forested Fen Forest Preserve, Kane County, Illinois, Final Report
Fox River Forested Fen Forest Preserve, Kane County, near Elgin, Illinois, is a new acquisition of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County and a new Illinois nature preserve. Because of its geographical proximity and plant community similarity to Trout Park Nature Preserve, Forested Fen probably has a similar aquatic macroinvertebrate fauna to that of Trout Park. Quantitative and qualitative sampling was conducted in April and May 2015 to answer this question. Several coldwater aquatic macroinvertebrates were found to inhabit the Forest Fen stream. The south and north branches of the stream differed markedly in from each other in terms of abundance, total taxa richness, and EPT (sensitive insect) richness, the north branch being the better of the two. Less than half of the historical EPT richness (most sensitive of aquatic insects) reported from Trout Park was present in Forested Fen. Forest Fen compare better to two other regional springbrook systems. Suggested management includes replanting of the area in white cedar to increase resistance to water temperature changes, and removal of the artificial pond that increases water temperature and disrupts dispersal routes.Kane County Forest Preserve DIstrictunpublishednot peer reviewedOpe
