Magnetoelectricity at room temperature in Bi0.9-xTbxLa0.1FeO3 system
Magnetoelectric compounds with the general formula, Bi0.9-xRxLa0.1FeO3 (R
=Gd, Tb, Dy, etc.), have been synthesized. These show the coexistence of
ferroelectricity and magnetism, possess high dielectric constant and exhibit
magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. Such materials may be of great
significance in basic as well as applied research.Comment: 11 pages of text and figure

Magnetoelectric ordering of BiFeO3 from the perspective of crystal chemistry
In this paper we examine the role of crystal chemistry factors in creating
conditions for formation of magnetoelectric ordering in BiFeO3. It is generally
accepted that the main reason of the ferroelectric distortion in BiFeO3 is
concerned with a stereochemical activity of the Bi lone pair. However, the lone
pair is stereochemically active in the paraelectric orthorhombic beta-phase as
well. We demonstrate that a crucial role in emerging of phase transitions of
the metal-insulator, paraelectric-ferroelectric and magnetic disorder-order
types belongs to the change of the degree of the lone pair stereochemical
activity - its consecutive increase with the temperature decrease. Using the
structural data, we calculated the sign and strength of magnetic couplings in
BiFeO3 in the range from 945 C down to 25 C and found the couplings, which
undergo the antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition with the temperature
decrease and give rise to the antiferromagnetic ordering and its delay in
regard to temperature, as compared to the ferroelectric ordering. We discuss
the reasons of emerging of the spatially modulated spin structure and its
suppression by doping with La3+.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 3 table

The effect of substrate clamping on the paraelectric to antiferroelectric phase transition in Nd-doped BiFeO₃ thin films
Thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO₂/Si substrates using pulsed laser deposition from a target with a composition (Bi₀.₈₂₅Nd₀.₁₇₅Fe₀.₉₇Ti₀.₀₃O₃) with 5 mol% excess Bi₂O₃ within the antiferroelectric (AFE) region of the NdFeO₃-BiFeO₃ phase diagram. However, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that films consisted of a mosaic microstructure in which (AFE), ferroelectric (FE) and paraelectric (PE) phases coexisted. Variation in the spatial distribution of Nd is typically greater in bulk ceramics than in thin films and therefore, the absence of single phase AFE cannot be attributed to local changes in composition. Instead, it is proposed that clamping due to mismatch in thermal expansion coefficient with the substrate suppresses the large volume change associated with the PE-FE and PE-AFE transition in bulk and its absence in the thin film prevents an avalanche-like transition throughout grains, which in bulk sustains single phase AFE, irrespective of local deviations in the Nd concentration
Magnetic structures and reorientation transitions in noncentrosymmetric uniaxial antiferromagnets
A phenomenological theory of magnetic states in noncentrosymmetric tetragonal
antiferromagnets is developed, which has to include homogeneous and
inhomogeneous terms (Lifshitz-invariants) derived from Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya
couplings. Magnetic properties of this class of antiferromagnets with low
crystal symmetry are discussed in relation to its first known members, the
recently detected compounds Ba2CuGe2O7 and K2V3O8. Crystallographic symmetry
and magnetic ordering in these systems allow the simultaneous occurrence of
chiral inhomogeneous magnetic structures and weak ferromagnetism. New types of
incommensurate magnetic structures are possible, namely, chiral helices with
rotation of staggered magnetization and oscillations of the total
magnetization. Field-induced reorientation transitions into modulated states
have been studied and corresponding phase diagrams are constructed. Structures
of magnetic defects (domain-walls and vortices) are discussed. In particular,
vortices, i.e. localized non-singular line defects, are stabilized by the
inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in uniaxial noncentrosymmetric
antiferromagnets.Comment: 18 pages RevTeX4, 13 figure
Simple top-down preparation of magnetic BiGdFeTiO nanoparticles by ultrasonication of multiferroic bulk material
We present a simple technique to synthesize ultrafine nanoparticles directly
from bulk multiferroic perovskite powder. The starting materials, which were
ceramic pellets of the nominal compositions of
BiGdFeTiO (x = 0.00-0.20), were prepared
initially by a solid state reaction technique, then ground into
micrometer-sized powders and mixed with isopropanol or water in an ultrasonic
bath. The particle size was studied as a function of sonication time with
transmission electron microscopic imaging and electron diffraction that
confirmed the formation of a large fraction of single-crystalline nanoparticles
with a mean size of 11-13 nm. A significant improvement in the magnetic
behavior of BiGdFeTiO nanoparticles compared to
their bulk counterparts was observed at room temperature. This sonication
technique may be considered as a simple and promising route to prepare
ultrafine nanoparticles for functional applications.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
The ESPRI project: astrometric exoplanet search with PRIMA I. Instrument description and performance of first light observations
The ESPRI project relies on the astrometric capabilities offered by the PRIMA
facility of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer for the discovery and study
of planetary systems. Our survey consists of obtaining high-precision
astrometry for a large sample of stars over several years and to detect their
barycentric motions due to orbiting planets. We present the operation
principle, the instrument's implementation, and the results of a first series
of test observations. A comprehensive overview of the instrument infrastructure
is given and the observation strategy for dual-field relative astrometry is
presented. The differential delay lines, a key component of the PRIMA facility
which was delivered by the ESPRI consortium, are described and their
performance within the facility is discussed. Observations of bright visual
binaries are used to test the observation procedures and to establish the
instrument's astrometric precision and accuracy. The data reduction strategy
for astrometry and the necessary corrections to the raw data are presented.
Adaptive optics observations with NACO are used as an independent verification
of PRIMA astrometric observations. The PRIMA facility was used to carry out
tests of astrometric observations. The astrometric performance in terms of
precision is limited by the atmospheric turbulence at a level close to the
theoretical expectations and a precision of 30 micro-arcseconds was achieved.
In contrast, the astrometric accuracy is insufficient for the goals of the
ESPRI project and is currently limited by systematic errors that originate in
the part of the interferometer beamtrain which is not monitored by the internal
metrology system. Our observations led to the definition of corrective actions
required to make the facility ready for carrying out the ESPRI search for
extrasolar planets.Comment: 32 pages, 39 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy and

Oscillations in Procyon A: First results from a multi-site campaign
Procyon A is a bright F5IV star in a binary system. Although the distance,
mass and angular diameter of this star are all known with high precision, the
exact evolutionary state is still unclear. Evolutionary tracks with different
ages and different mass fractions of hydrogen in the core pass, within the
errors, through the observed position of Procyon A in the Hertzsprung-Russell
diagram. For more than 15 years several different groups have studied the
solar-like oscillations in Procyon A to determine its evolutionary state.
Although several studies independently detected power excess in the
periodogram, there is no agreement on the actual oscillation frequencies yet.
This is probably due to either insufficient high-quality data (i.e., aliasing)
or due to intrinsic properties of the star (i.e., short mode lifetimes). Now a
spectroscopic multi-site campaign using 10 telescopes world-wide (minimizing
aliasing effects) with a total time span of nearly 4 weeks (increase the
frequency resolution) is performed to identify frequencies in this star and
finally determine its properties and evolutionary state.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures to be published in the proceedings of HELAS II
