INDUCED AGGRESSION IN JEAB: A SURVEY OF PUBLICATIONS

    Get PDF
Early experimental research on induced aggression aimed to set the direct relation between aversive stimulation and aggressive behavior. The generality of the phenomenon was evaluated with variations in the subjects’ species and in the inducting stimuli. Seminal studies on induced aggression were published in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (JEAB). The objectives of the present study were systematically present the temporal distribution of publications on induced aggression in JEAB and describe the studies’ methodological aspects. The terms “aggress*”, “fight*”, and “attack*” were searched in the Wiley Online Library database, and selecting criteria were applied. Fifty- eight articles were analyzed. The global representativeness of publications about induced aggression in JEAB is 1.1%. Between 1962 and 1981, there were regular publications about induced aggression in the journal, representing 2.8% of the publications in JEAB in the referred period. During this interval, a first period of publications was marked by investigations involving the exposition of rats and squirrel monkeys to electric shock, which would result in fighting and biting aggressive responses, respectively; a second period was marked by studies involving the exposition of pigeons to schedules of reinforcement, resulting in aggressive pecking responses. The publication pattern of induced aggression on JEAB is in agreement with previous indications regarding the temporal distribution of general publications on induced aggression. Limitations of the present work are discussed, and suggestions for additional research are provided. Keywords: induced aggression, JEAB, survey

A comparison of automated machine learning tools for predicting energy building consumption in smart cities

In this paper, we explore and compare three recently proposed Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) tools (AutoGluon, H2 O, Oracle AutoMLx) to create a single regression model that is capable of predicting smart city energy building consumption values. Using a recently collected one year hourly energy consumption dataset, related with 29 buildings from a Portuguese city, we perform several Machine Learning (ML) computational experiments, assuming two sets of input features (with and without lagged data) and a realistic rolling window evaluation. Furthermore, the obtained results are compared with a univariate Time Series Forecasting (TSF) approach, based on the automated FEDOT tool, which requires generating a predictive model for each building. Overall, competitive results, in terms of both predictive and computational effort performances, were obtained by the input lagged AutoGluon single regression modeling approach.FCT - Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e a Tecnologia(UIDB/00319/2020

Bank relationships and corporate governance : a survey of the literature from the perspective of SMEs

    Get PDF
The aim of this work is to review and systematise the literature on how bank relationships, corporate governance and the interdependence between them can influence corporate performance. The banks and the enterprises establish relationships which enable them to overcome problems of asymmetrical information thereby alleviating difficulties felt in obtaining financial resources. In addition, the specificities that SMEs face, namely their ownership structure, as they are often owned and controlled by families, lead us to study the role played by corporate governance and the various control mechanisms in achieving corporate objectives. These features confer an important supervisory role on credit institutions which stem from the information they hold

    Zipper-based modular and deforested computations

In this paper we present a methodology to implement multiple traversal algorithms in a functional programming setting. The implementations we obtain s of highly modular and intermediate structure free programs, that rely on the concept of functional zippers to navigate on data structures.Even though our methodology is developed and presented under Haskell, a lazy functional language, we do not make essential use of laziness. This is an essential difference with respect to other attribute grammar embeddings. This also means that an approach similar to ours can be followed in a strict functional setting such as Ocaml, for example. In the paper, our technique is applied to a significant number of problems that are well-known to the functional programming community, demonstrating its practical interest.- (undefined

A performance comparison between different industrial real-time indoor localization systems for mobile platforms

    Get PDF
The flexibility and versatility associated with autonomous mobile robots (AMR) have facilitated their integration into different types of industries and tasks. However, as the main objective of their implementation on the factory floor is to optimize processes and, consequently, the time associated with them, it is necessary to take into account the environment and congestion to which they are subjected. Localization, on the shop floor and in real time, is an important requirement to optimize the AMRs’ trajectory management, thus avoiding livelocks and deadlocks during their movements in partnership with manual forklift operators and logistic trains. Threeof the most commonly used localization techniques in indoor environments (time of flight, angle of arrival, and time difference of arrival), as well as two of the most commonly used indoor localization methods in the industry (ultra-wideband, and ultrasound), are presented and compared in this paper. Furthermore, it identifies and compares three industrial indoor localization solutions: Qorvo, Eliko Kio, and Marvelmind, implemented in an industrial mobile platform, which is the main contribution of this paper. These solutions can be applied to both AMRs and other mobile platforms, such as forklifts and logistic trains. In terms of results, the Marvelmind system, which uses an ultrasound method, was the best solution. This work is co-financed by Component 5-Capitalization and Business Innovation, integrated in the Resilience Dimension of the Recovery and Resilience Plan within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR) of the European Union (EU), framed in the Next Generation EU, for the period 2021–2026, within project Produtech_R3, with reference 60.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This paper discusses the ethnographic experiences in a barber shop located in Porto Alegre’s central area. From observating the barber shop’s everyday life, someone realizes that conflict emerges as the main form of association in that place. Then, the conflict makes it possible to the barbers to reflect on themselves and on their relanshionships with each other, also providing the researcher means to elaborate the characters of this ethnography. This work also contains considerations on the territoriality of the barber shop in order to understand the entrance of the ethnographer in the field of research and on the connections between Georg Simmel’s concepts of sociability and conflit in the barber shop’s everyday life
