    Rights or containment? The politics of Aboriginal cultural heritage in Victoria

    Aboriginal cultural heritage protection, and the legislative regimes that underpin it, constitute important mechanisms for Aboriginal people to assert their rights and responsibilities. This is especially so in Victoria, where legislation vests wide-ranging powers and control of cultural heritage with Aboriginal communities. However, the politics of cultural heritage, including its institutionalisation as a scientific body of knowledge within the state, can also result in a powerful limiting of Aboriginal rights and responsibilities. This paper examines the politics of cultural heritage through a case study of a small forest in north-west Victoria. Here, a dispute about logging has pivoted around differing conceptualisations of Aboriginal cultural heritage values and their management. Cultural heritage, in this case, is both a powerful tool for the assertion of Aboriginal rights and interests, but simultaneously a set of boundaries within which the state operates to limit and manage the challenge those assertions pose. The paper will argue that Aboriginal cultural heritage is a politically contested and shifting domain structured around Aboriginal law and politics, Australian statute and the legacy of colonial history

    Assessment of the cortisol awakening response: expert consensus guidelines

    The cortisol awakening response (CAR), the marked increase in cortisol secretion over the first 30–45 min after morning awakening, has been related to a wide range of psychosocial, physical and mental health parameters, making it a key variable for psychoneuroendocrinological research. The CAR is typically assessed from self-collection of saliva samples within the domestic setting. While this confers ecological validity, it lacks direct researcher oversight which can be problematic as the validity of CAR measurement critically relies on participants closely following a timed sampling schedule, beginning with the moment of awakening. Researchers assessing the CAR thus need to take important steps to maximize and monitor saliva sampling accuracy as well as consider a range of other relevant methodological factors. To promote best practice of future research in this field, the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology initiated an expert panel charged with (i) summarizing relevant evidence and collective experience on methodological factors affecting CAR assessment and (ii) formulating clear consensus guidelines for future research. The present report summarizes the results of this undertaking. Consensus guidelines are presented on central aspects of CAR assessment, including objective control of sampling accuracy/adherence, participant instructions, covariate accounting, sampling protocols, quantification strategies as well as reporting and interpreting of CAR data. Meeting these methodological standards in future research will create more powerful research designs, thus yielding more reliable and reproducible results and helping to further advance understanding in this evolving field of research

    Identifying diachronic topic-based research communities by clustering shared research trajectories

    Communities of academic authors are usually identified by means of standard community detection algorithms, which exploit ‘static’ relations, such as co-authorship or citation networks. In contrast with these approaches, here we focus on diachronic topic-based communities –i.e., communities of people who appear to work on semantically related topics at the same time. These communities are interesting because their analysis allows us to make sense of the dynamics of the research world –e.g., migration of researchers from one topic to another, new communities being spawn by older ones, communities splitting, merging, ceasing to exist, etc. To this purpose, we are interested in developing clustering methods that are able to handle correctly the dynamic aspects of topic-based community formation, prioritizing the relationship between researchers who appear to follow the same research trajectories. We thus present a novel approach called Temporal Semantic Topic-Based Clustering (TST), which exploits a novel metric for clustering researchers according to their research trajectories, defined as distributions of semantic topics over time. The approach has been evaluated through an empirical study involving 25 experts from the Semantic Web and Human-Computer Interaction areas. The evaluation shows that TST exhibits a performance comparable to the one achieved by human experts

    A hybrid semantic approach to building dynamic maps of research communities

    In the last ten years, ontology-based recommender systems have been shown to be effective tools for predicting user preferences and suggesting items. There are however some issues associated with the ontologies adopted by these approaches, such as: 1) their crafting is not a cheap process, being time consuming and calling for specialist expertise; 2) they may not represent accurately the viewpoint of the targeted user community; 3) they tend to provide rather static models, which fail to keep track of evolving user perspectives. To address these issues, we propose Klink UM, an approach for extracting emergent semantics from user feedbacks, with the aim of tailoring the ontology to the users and improving the recommendations accuracy. Klink UM uses statistical and machine learning techniques for finding hierarchical and similarity relationships between keywords associated with rated items and can be used for: 1) building a conceptual taxonomy from scratch, 2) enriching and correcting an existing ontology, 3) providing a numerical estimate of the intensity of semantic relationships according to the users. The evaluation shows that Klink UM performs well with respect to handcrafted ontologies and can significantly increase the accuracy of suggestions in content-based recommender systems

    Protection from T cell-dependent colitis by the helminth-derived immunomodulatory mimic of transforming growth factor-ß, Hp-TGM

    In animal models of inflammatory colitis, pathology can be ameliorated by several intestinal helminth parasites, including the mouse nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus. To identify parasite products that may exert anti-inflammatory effects in vivo, we tested H. polygyrus excretory-secretory (HES) products, as well as a recombinantly-expressed parasite protein, TGM, that functionally mimics the mammalian immunomodulatory cytokine TGF-β. HES and TGM showed a degree of protection in DSS-induced colitis, with a reduction in inflammatory cytokines, but did not fully block the development of pathology. HES also showed little benefit in a similar acute TNBS-induced model. However, in a T cell transfer-mediated model with RAG-deficient mice, HES reduced disease scores if administered throughout the first 2 or 4 weeks following transfer but was less effective if treatment was delayed until 14 days after T cell transfer. Recombinant TGM similarly dampened colitis in RAG-deficient recipients of effector T cells, and was effective even if introduced only once symptoms had begun to be manifest. These results are a promising indication that TGM may replicate, and even surpass, the modulatory properties of native parasite HES

    Cheeky Witnessing

    Feminists witness legal worlds as they observe, document, and share nothing less than the reproduction of life itself. The world of the abortion trail, where people and things move across borders to change life’s reproduction, has generated a rich plurality of feminist witnessing. In observing how feminist activists improvise with sources, figures and objects of legal consciousness on the abortion trail, this paper seeks to contribute to critical understanding of that plurality, particularly as it emerges in diaspora space. Focusing on Murphy’s concept of immodest witnessing, with its attention to bodies, protocols and apparatuses as constituents of knowledge, the paper thinks with the diasporic feminist activist performance group, Speaking of I.M.E.L.D.A., about how they used self-examination, collective collaboration, and knowledge-sharing on the trail to repeal of Ireland’s Eighth Amendment. The paper argues that their improvisation with legal consciousness of reproductive choice enacts ‘cheeky witnessing’. Cheeky witnessing has three dynamics as a method of observation. First, it is messy and irreverent in innovating with names to display the mixed genealogies of sources of feminist knowledge. Second, cheeky witnessing generates novel subject-figures, such as migrant cleaners, who make knowing connections between different reproductive labourers as observers of the trail in diaspora space. Third, cheeky witnessing places funny objects, knickers in this instance, so as to join up particular public locations and make them more, if unevenly, comfortable for sexual and reproductive bodies. Cheeky witnessing show us how committed and partial practices play a role in speaking across interests and experiences, in stretching the legal imagination, and in sustaining the everyday grind of making a better world

    Global sensitivity analysis of stochastic computer models with joint metamodels

    The global sensitivity analysis method used to quantify the influence of uncertain input variables on the variability in numerical model responses has already been applied to deterministic computer codes; deterministic means here that the same set of input variables gives always the same output value. This paper proposes a global sensitivity analysis methodology for stochastic computer codes, for which the result of each code run is itself random. The framework of the joint modeling of the mean and dispersion of heteroscedastic data is used. To deal with the complexity of computer experiment outputs, nonparametric joint models are discussed and a new Gaussian process-based joint model is proposed. The relevance of these models is analyzed based upon two case studies. Results show that the joint modeling approach yields accurate sensitivity index estimatiors even when heteroscedasticity is strong

    `What is a Thing?': Topos Theory in the Foundations of Physics

    The goal of this paper is to summarise the first steps in developing a fundamentally new way of constructing theories of physics. The motivation comes from a desire to address certain deep issues that arise when contemplating quantum theories of space and time. In doing so we provide a new answer to Heidegger's timeless question ``What is a thing?''. Our basic contention is that constructing a theory of physics is equivalent to finding a representation in a topos of a certain formal language that is attached to the system. Classical physics uses the topos of sets. Other theories involve a different topos. For the types of theory discussed in this paper, a key goal is to represent any physical quantity AA with an arrow \breve{A}_\phi:\Si_\phi\map\R_\phi where \Si_\phi and Rϕ\R_\phi are two special objects (the `state-object' and `quantity-value object') in the appropriate topos, τϕ\tau_\phi. We discuss two different types of language that can be attached to a system, SS. The first, \PL{S}, is a propositional language; the second, \L{S}, is a higher-order, typed language. Both languages provide deductive systems with an intuitionistic logic. With the aid of \PL{S} we expand and develop some of the earlier work (By CJI and collaborators.) on topos theory and quantum physics. A key step is a process we term `daseinisation' by which a projection operator is mapped to a sub-object of the spectral presheaf \Sig--the topos quantum analogue of a classical state space. The topos concerned is \SetH{}: the category of contravariant set-valued functors on the category (partially ordered set) \V{} of commutative sub-algebras of the algebra of bounded operators on the quantum Hilbert space \Hi.Comment: To appear in ``New Structures in Physics'' ed R.
