A rapid preparation technique for studying highly water-swollen membranes with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) supplied with a cryo-unit

    Get PDF
In this study the cryo-unit is introduced as a new and useful instrument to investigate water-containing specimens with the SEM. Often water-containing biological specimens are studied, but in our case we used water-swollen polymer membranes. The results show that application of a cryo-unit permits the study of this material at low temperatures up to magnifications of about 10 000 times, while other techniques failed to give reproducible results

A preparation technique for examination of wet-spun polymer fibers in a scanning electron microscope

    Get PDF
In this paper the technique is discussed of sample preparation for freshly wet-spun polymer fibers, to be examined by scanning electron microscopy.\ud It makes use of cryogenic breaking of the samples, followed by freeze drying or freeze-etching of the specimen and coating it with a charge conducting layer.\ud The method can also be adapted to the investigation of intermediate coagulation structures of the spinning fiber. Results are discussed for nylon-6 and polyurethane wet-spun fibers

Short-term surgical complications after radical hysterectomy—A nationwide cohort study

    Get PDF
Introduction: Centralization has, among other aspects, been argued to have an impact on quality of care in terms of surgical morbidity. Next, monitoring quality of care is essential in identifying areas of improvement. This nationwide cohort study was conducted to determine the rate of short-term surgical complications and to evaluate its possible predictors in women with early-stage cervical cancer. Material and methods: Women diagnosed with early-stage cervical cancer, 2009 FIGO stages IB1 and IIA1, between 2015 and 2017 who underwent radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy in 1 of the 9 specialized medical centers in the Netherlands, were identified from the Netherlands Cancer Registry. Women were excluded if primary treatment consisted of hysterectomy without parametrial dissection or radical trachelectomy. Women in whom radical hysterectomy was aborted during the procedure, were also

Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF. Delft Schieoevers: Connecting (urban) spaces

    No full text
With the coming of the new railway tunnel in Delft there is a great opportunity to renew the Railway zone of delft and connect different city parts that have been seperated by the viaduct. In my vision a lineair citypark on top of the tunnel combined with dwellings and several public buildings will give the city a new impuls. By creating more leasure spaces in the public space the new park will not only be a route from north to south, but also a place where people can relax or come together to do outdoor activities. As part of the assignment I made a design for a new Museum that uses the current Bacinol2 building as entrance. The building can be seen as a complex with different building parts: The old building with office space and studio's, the new building with the museum and attached to that studiodwellings. The complex has a courtyard in the middle that connects all these buildingparts. It is a public courtyard that will be open 24/7 and can be seen as an introvert space with sculptures and plants. Here people can relax and take a step from the more busy city park. The museum houses all sorts of contemporary art. The most striking feature of the museum are the "window boxes" that give a view over the city. They act as orientation points on the route and give the feeling you are standing outside the building. The staircases are fully glazed and are positioned in the courtyard to also act as orientation points and give a view over the courtyard. The main theme of this project was therefor not only orientation, but also "to see and be seen".RMITArchitectur

Radiated Spectrum of Focal Plane Array Antennas with LINCA Array Feeds

    No full text
In this contribution, radiation pattern measurements of a focal plane array antenna are combined with simulated outphasing waveforms to investigate the radiated spectrum. The recombination of the outphasing signals takes place in free-space (LINCA). The dynamic range is calculated and it is discussed whether the spectral masks would be violated with this system. A dynamic range of 24.1dB can be achieved, but the radiated out-of-band spectral components are not mitigated by the directive nature of the reflector

Outphasing Methods for Beyond-5G Millimeter-Wave Base Station Applications

    Get PDF
This paper presents a review of various outphasing methods. Key performance indicators are formulated focusing on reliability, energy consumption and bandwidth and are used to compare state-of-the-art outphasing methods. Outphasing methods which show potential for beyond-5G base station applications are described and relevant advantages, disadvantages and literature gaps are pointed out. Specifically, the recent developments on using antenna elements to be co-designed with an outphasing system will be considered as a promising efficient solution. Findings in this paper show that a co-designed amplifier-antenna outphasing system achieves one of the highest peak power-added efficiencies at millimeter-wave frequencies compared to other PA topologies
