    Polarimetric Observations of 15 AGNs at High Frequencies

The VLBA observations are accompanied at many epochs by simultaneous mea- surements of polarization at 1.35/0.85 mm as well as less frequent simultaneous optical polarization measurements. We discuss the similarities and complexities of polarization behavior at different frequencies along with the VLBI properties

    Exaggerated renal fibrosis in P2X4 receptor-deficient mice following unilateral ureteric obstruction

    Background The ATP-sensitive P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) has been shown to contribute to renal injury in nephrotoxic nephritis, a rodent model of acute glomerulonephritis, and in unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO), a rodent model of chronic interstitial inflammation and fibrosis. Renal tubular cells, endothelial cells and macrophages also express the closely related P2X4 receptor (P2X4R), which is chromosomally co-located with P2X7R and has 40% homology; it is also pro-inflammatory and has been shown to interact with P2X7R to modulate its pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory effects. Therefore, we chose to explore the function of P2X4R in the UUO model of renal injury using knockout mice. We hypothesized that UUO-induced tubulointerstitial damage and fibrosis would also be attenuated in P2X4R−/− mice. Method P2X4R−/− and wild-type (WT) mice were subjected to either UUO or sham operation. Kidney samples taken on Days 7 and 14 were evaluated for renal inflammation and fibrosis, and expression of pro-fibrotic factors. Results To our surprise, the obstructed kidney in P2X4R−/− mice showed more severe renal injury, more collagen deposition (picrosirius red staining, increase of 53%; P < 0.05) and more type I collagen staining (increase of 107%; P < 0.01), as well as increased mRNA for TGF-β (increase of 102%, P < 0.0005) and CTGF (increase of 157%; P < 0.05) by Day 14, compared with the UUO WT mice. Conclusion These findings showed that lack of P2X4R expression leads to increased renal fibrosis, and increased expression of TGF-β and CTGF in the UUO mode

    Surface Roughness and Effective Stick-Slip Motion

    The effect of random surface roughness on hydrodynamics of viscous incompressible liquid is discussed. Roughness-driven contributions to hydrodynamic flows, energy dissipation, and friction force are calculated in a wide range of parameters. When the hydrodynamic decay length (the viscous wave penetration depth) is larger than the size of random surface inhomogeneities, it is possible to replace a random rough surface by effective stick-slip boundary conditions on a flat surface with two constants: the stick-slip length and the renormalization of viscosity near the boundary. The stick-slip length and the renormalization coefficient are expressed explicitly via the correlation function of random surface inhomogeneities. The effective stick-slip length is always negative signifying the effective slow-down of the hydrodynamic flows by the rough surface (stick rather than slip motion). A simple hydrodynamic model is presented as an illustration of these general hydrodynamic results. The effective boundary parameters are analyzed numerically for Gaussian, power-law and exponentially decaying correlators with various indices. The maximum on the frequency dependence of the dissipation allows one to extract the correlation radius (characteristic size) of the surface inhomogeneities directly from, for example, experiments with torsional quartz oscillators.Comment: RevTeX4, 14 pages, 3 figure

    Assessing sampling of the fossil record in a geographically and stratigraphically constrained dataset: the Chalk Group of Hampshire, southern UK

    Taphonomic, geological and sampling processes have been cited as biasing richness measurements in the fossil record, and sampling proxies have been widely used to assess this. However, the link between sampling and taxonomic richness is poorly understood, and there has been much debate over the equivalence and relevance of proxies. We approach this question by combining both historical and novel data: a historical fossil occurrence dataset with uniquely high spatial resolution from the Upper Cretaceous Chalk Group of Hampshire, UK, and a newly-compiled 3D geological model which maps subsurface extent. The geological model provides rock volumes, and these are compared with exposure and outcrop area, sampling proxies that have often been conflated in previous studies. The extent to which exposure area (true rock availability) has changed over research time is also tested. We find a trend of low Cenomanian to high Turonian to Campanian raw richness, which correlates with, and is possibly driven by the number of specimens found. After sampling standardisation, an unexpected mid-Turonian peak diversity is recovered, and sampling-standardised genus richness is best predicted by rock volume, suggesting a species-area (or, a “genus-area”) effect. Additionally, total exposure area has changed over time, but relative exposure remains the same

    New constraints on WIMPs from the Canfranc IGEX dark matter search

    The IGEX Collaboration enriched 76Ge double-beta decay detectors are currently operating in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory with an overburden of 2450 m.w.e. A recent upgrade has made it possible to use them in a search for WIMPs. A new exclusion plot has been derived for WIMP-nucleon spin-independent interaction. To obtain this result, 30 days of data from one IGEX detector, which has an energy threshold of ~4 keV, have been considered. These data improve the exclusion limits derived from other germanium diode experiments in the ~50 GeV DAMA region, and show that with a moderate improvement of the background below 10 keV, the DAMA region may be tested with an additional 1 kg-year of exposure.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physics Letter

    Pulse Shape Discrimination in the IGEX Experiment

    The IGEX experiment has been operating enriched germanium detectors in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (Spain) in a search for the neutrinoless double decay of 76Ge. The implementation of Pulse Shape Discrimination techniques to reduce the radioactive background is described in detail. This analysis has been applied to a fraction of the IGEX data, leading to a rejection of ~60 % of their background, in the region of interest (from 2 to 2.5 MeV), down to ~0.09 c/(keV kg y).Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure

    A reversible theory of entanglement and its relation to the second law

    We consider the manipulation of multipartite entangled states in the limit of many copies under quantum operations that asymptotically cannot generate entanglement. As announced in [Brandao and Plenio, Nature Physics 4, 8 (2008)], and in stark contrast to the manipulation of entanglement under local operations and classical communication, the entanglement shared by two or more parties can be reversibly interconverted in this setting. The unique entanglement measure is identified as the regularized relative entropy of entanglement, which is shown to be equal to a regularized and smoothed version of the logarithmic robustness of entanglement. Here we give a rigorous proof of this result, which is fundamentally based on a certain recent extension of quantum Stein's Lemma proved in [Brandao and Plenio, Commun. Math. 295, 791 (2010)], giving the best measurement strategy for discriminating several copies of an entangled state from an arbitrary sequence of non-entangled states, with an optimal distinguishability rate equal to the regularized relative entropy of entanglement.     Associations between daily sitting time and the combinations of lifestyle risk factors in men

    Background: Understanding the reciprocal role that multiple problematic behaviours play in men's health is important for intervention delivery and for reducing the healthcare burden. Data regarding the concurrence of problematic health behaviours is currently limited but offers insights into risk profiles, and should now include total time spent sitting/day. Methods: Self-reported data on lifestyle health behaviours was collected from 232 men aged ≥18 years who engaged in a men's health promotion programme delivered by 16 English Premier League Clubs. Results: Men at risk due to high sitting display multiple concurrent lifestyle risk factors, 88.6% displayed at least two ancillary risk factors and were three times more likely to report ≥2 lifestyle risk factors (OR. =3.13, 95% confidence interval (CI). =1.52-6.42) than those with low sitting risk. Significant differences in the mean number of risk factors reported between those participants in the higher risk (2.43. ±. 0.90) and lower risk (2.13. ±. 0.96) sitting categories were also found (P=0.015). Conclusions: Hard-to-reach men displayed multiple problematic concurrent behaviours, strongly linked to total sitting time. © 2012 WPMH GmbH

    Modeling DNA Structure, Elasticity and Deformations at the Base-pair Level

    We present a generic model for DNA at the base-pair level. We use a variant of the Gay-Berne potential to represent the stacking energy between neighboring base-pairs. The sugar-phosphate backbones are taken into account by semi-rigid harmonic springs with a non-zero spring length. The competition of these two interactions and the introduction of a simple geometrical constraint leads to a stacked right-handed B-DNA-like conformation. The mapping of the presented model to the Marko-Siggia and the Stack-of-Plates model enables us to optimize the free model parameters so as to reproduce the experimentally known observables such as persistence lengths, mean and mean squared base-pair step parameters. For the optimized model parameters we measured the critical force where the transition from B- to S-DNA occurs to be approximately 140pN140{pN}. We observe an overstretched S-DNA conformation with highly inclined bases that partially preserves the stacking of successive base-pairs.Comment: 15 pages, 25 figures. submitted to PR

    Reasons for hormonal contraceptive use in a cohort of African-American women living in the Detroit area

    Objectives: To characterize reasons for hormonal contraceptive (HC) use in 1,455 African-American women, aged 23–35 years. Study design: The community-based cohort members were recruited from the Detroit, Michigan area in 2010–2012. HC history was collected via telephone interview. Results: Seven percent reported HC use exclusively for non-contraceptive purposes, and 49% reported non-contraceptive reasons in addition to contraception. Non-contraceptive reasons were reported for all HC types, but were most common for combined oral contraceptives. Primary reasons were for irregular cycles, heavy bleeding, and pain. Conclusions: In this large cohort of Black women, HC use to treat menstrual problems was common. Implications: HCs were commonly used for both pregnancy prevention and management of menstrual symptoms, but some women used HCs exclusively for menstrual symptom relief. The importance for women of non-contraceptive reasons for HC use may not be adequately recognized, and published data on Black women's reasons for HC use remain limited
