Parallel lives? Ethnic segregation in schools and neighbourhoods

    Get PDF
We provide evidence on the extent of ethnic segregation experienced by children across secondary schools and neighbourhoods (wards). Using 2001 Schools Census and Population Census data we employ the indices of dissimilarity and isolation and compare patterns of segregation across nine ethnic groups, and across Local Education Authorities in England. Looking at both schools and neighbourhoods, we find high levels of segregation for the different groups, along with considerable variation across England. We find consistently higher segregation for South Asian pupils than for Black pupils. For most ethnic groups children are more segregated at school than in their neighbourhood. We analyse the relative degree of segregation and show that high population density is associated with high relative school segregation.education, sorting

Demographic Variables as Predictors of First Year Undergraduates’ Use of the Library in the University of Calabar: Counselling Implications

    Get PDF
This study was situated in the University of Calabar, Nigeria. It sought to determine demographic variables as predictors of first year undergraduates’ use of the library. The outcome of the study is expected to be invaluable to the guidance counsellors and other stakeholders as it should guide them to predict the first year undergraduates’ inclination to library use based on their demographic variables. Such accurate prediction will facilitate the design of appropriate programmes that would aid the first year undergraduates to make the best use of the library and attain academic success. The study was guided by four research questions and three hypotheses tested at .05 level of significance. A researchers’ developed instrument tagged Predictors of Usage Questionnaire (PUQ) was used in gathering data. The data generated was analysed using mean, standard deviation, t-test and ANOVA. The results of the study indicated that extent of use of the library by the first year undergraduates is high. The results also indicated age and area of specialization as predictors of first year undergraduates’ use of the library; while gender is not a predictor of the first year undergraduates’ use of the library. The study therefore outlines the counselling implications of these results and recommends that counsellors should consider these variables while designing interventions to help the students to acquire good reading culture and effective study habits. Role of FGFRL1 and other FGF signaling proteins in early kidney development

The mammalian kidney develops from the ureteric bud and the metanephric mesenchyme. In mice, the ureteric bud invades the metanephric mesenchyme at day E10.5 and begins to branch. The tips of the ureteric bud induce the metanephric mesenchyme to condense and form the cap mesenchyme. Some cells of this cap mesenchyme undergo a mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition and differentiate into renal vesicles, which further develop into nephrons. The developing kidney expresses Fibroblast growth factor (Fgf)1, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 20 and Fgf receptors Fgfr1 and Fgfr2. Fgf7 and Fgf10, mainly secreted by the metanephric mesenchyme, bind to Fgfr2b of the ureteric bud and induce branching. Fgfr1 and Fgfr2c are required for formation of the metanephric mesenchyme, however the two receptors can substitute for one another. Fgf8, secreted by renal vesicles, binds to Fgfr1 and supports survival of cells in the nascent nephrons. Fgf9 and Fgf20, expressed in the metanephric mesenchyme, are necessary to maintain survival of progenitor cells in the cortical region of the kidney. FgfrL1 is a novel member of the Fgfr family that lacks the intracellular tyrosine kinase domain. It is expressed in the ureteric bud and all nephrogenic structures. Targeted deletion of FgfrL1 leads to severe kidney dysgenesis due to the lack of renal vesicles. FgfrL1 is known to interact mainly with Fgf8. It is therefore conceivable that FgfrL1 restricts signaling of Fgf8 to the precise location of the nascent nephrons. It might also promote tight adhesion of cells in the condensed metanephric mesenchyme as required for the mesenchymal-to-epithelial transitio

Lifshitz flows in IIB and dual field theories

    Get PDF
We construct solutions describing flows between AdS and Lifshitz spacetimes in IIB supergravity. We find that flows from AdS5 can approach either AdS3 or Lifshitz3 in the IR depending on the values of the deformation from AdS5. Surprisingly, the choice between AdS and Lifshitz IR depends only on the value of the deformation, not on its character; the breaking of the Lorentz symmetry in the flows with Lifshitz IR is spontaneous. We find that the values of the deformation which lead to flows to Lifshitz make the UV field theory dual to the AdS5 geometry unstable, so that these flows do not offer an approach to defining the field theory dual to the Lifshitz spacetime
