Using LUCAS survey and Recurrent Neural Networks to produce LCLU classification based on a Satellite Image time series of Sentinel-2

Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Knowledge Management and Business IntelligenceThe need of timely and accurate information for the territory has increased over the years, making Land Cover Land Use (LCLU) mapping one of the most common application of remote sensing. Recently, the advances in satellite technology and the open access policies for remote sensing data increased the interest in exploring satellite image time series. In addition, the attention of researchers has shifted from standard machine learning algorithms (e.g., Support Vector Machines and Random Forest) to Recurrent Neural Networks due to their ability of exploiting sequential information. However, acquiring reference data to train these algorithms is still a hurdle. This study aims to evaluate the capability of a Gated Recurrent Unit in performing pixel-level LCLU classification of a satellite image time series, using Sentinel-2 imagery and having the LUCAS survey as reference data. To assess the performance of our model we compared it to state-of-the-art classifiers (SVM and RF). Due to the unbalance nature of the LUCAS survey, we applied oversampling to this dataset to increase the performance of our models, testing three different oversampling techniques. The results attained showed that Recurrent Neural Networks did not outperform the other state-of-the-art algorithms, when trained with a limited number of sampling units, and that oversampling the LUCAS survey increased the performance of all the classifiers. Finally, we were able to demonstrate that it is possible to produce LCLU classification of satellite image time series using only open-source data by using Sentinel-2 imagery and the LUCAS survey as refence data

The price of wind power generation in Iberia and the merit-order effect

Renewable energy generation depresses electricity spot prices, which is often used as argument to justify incentives provided to renewables. In the so-called “merit-order effect”, renewable power reduces the load available for conventional power and displaces higher marginal cost generation out of the market.  In this study, we estimate the value of the “merit-order effect” due to wind power generation in the Iberian market, in the period between 1st January 2008 and 31st October 2016. This value, representing consumers’ potential cost savings, is compared with the direct costs of the financial incentives in Portugal and in Spain.The accumulated “merit-order effect” amount is estimated to be 26.1 billion €, whilst the total values for the financial incentives reported is 23.9 billion €. The value of the “merit-order effect” explains the existing lower returns by conventional generation and might have additional impacts on future RES projects, subject to normal electricity market risks

Reflectir e debater : a importância da problemática dos valores e da cultura para o processo de aprendizagem

Relatório da prática de ensino supervisionada, Mestrado em Ensino de Filosofia, Universidade de Lisboa, 2011O relatório relativo à Prática de Ensino Supervisionada é resultado do trabalho desenvolvido na Escola Secundária Manuel Cargaleiro, no âmbito do Mestrado em Ensino da Filosofia. O tema incidirá sobre o segundo ponto da Unidade II - «A acção humana e os valores: Os valores – análise e compreensão da experiência valorativa» - referente ao programa de Filosofia do 10º ano, onde foram leccionadas oito aulas a duas turmas da vertente científica. As planificações e os materiais utilizados para a concretização da subunidade supracitada, serão alvo de uma reflexão que terá como objectivo a análise das estratégias que obtiveram sucesso e das que necessitam de reformulação. Os instrumentos de avaliação seleccionados consistem na realização de exercícios em aula, teste formativo e teste sumativo. Este relatório pretende analisar a importância filosófica e social da subunidade em questão e a enorme potencialidade desta para concretização dos objectivos – presentes no programa da disciplina. Importa igualmente reflectir acerca da problemática dos valores e do diálogo/choque entre culturas. Para isso, é necessário clarificar o complexo conceito de cultura recorrendo a relevantes textos filosóficos. Procurar-se-á ainda reflectir acerca das metodologias mais adequadas para a realização dos objectivos propostos e promoção das competências essenciais. Dar-se-á primazia ao contacto com textos filosóficos e à promoção de competências escrita, reflexiva, crítica e relacional.The report concerning the Supervised Teaching Practice results from the work developed at the Manuel Cargaleiro High School, in the context of the Master in Philosophy Teaching. The topic will be focused on the second point of Unit II - "Human action and values: the values - analysis and understanding of the valorization experience" - of the 10th grade Philosophy program, where eight lessons were taught to two classes of the scientific branch. The plans and materials used for the fulfillment of the above subunit will be subject to a reflection that will aim to analyze the strategies that were successful and those in needs of reformulation. The assessment tools consist of exercises made in class, as well as formative and summative assessment tests. This report aims to analyze the philosophical and social importance of the subunit in question and its enormous potential, in order to accomplish the objectives - present in the discipline’s program. It is also important to reflect on the issue of values and dialogue/clash of cultures. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the complex concept of culture, using relevant philosophical texts. We will also reflect on the most appropriate methodologies to achieve the proposed objectives and the promotion of key competences. We will give preference to the contact with philosophical texts and the promotion of writing, reflective, critical and relational skills

Julgamentos profissionais no SNC e seus efeitos em sede de IRC

Mestrado em ContabilidadeA internacionalização dos mercados intensificou a necessidade de gerar um único sistema contabilístico que fosse admitido internacionalmente e que simplificasse o acesso aos mercados de capitais internacionais. O normativo contabilístico nacional sofreu uma profunda reforma com a entrada em vigor, em 2010, do SNC, que tem a sua base no normativo internacional, mais precisamente nas IAS/IFRS. O SNC é um modelo que coloca ênfase na teoria da contabilidade em detrimento de regras contabilísticas mecanizadas. É um sistema contabilístico assente em princípios que dá relevo ao julgamento profissional na preparação da informação financeira. A adoção do SNC implica uma alteração na forma de pensar a contabilidade e do relato financeiro. É um modelo contabilístico que incorpora juízos de valor, onde a estrutura conceptual deverá ser considerada a base teórica fundamental e de suporte à aplicação das NCRF incluídas no SNC. Esta dissertação pretende dar destaque aos julgamentos profissionais subjacentes no SNC, sendo nosso objetivo identificar situações onde estão implícitos juízos de valor e analisar os seus impactos fiscais em sede de IRC.The internationalization of markets has intensified the need to generate a single accounting system that is internationally accepted and simplify access to international capital markets. The national accounting framework has undergone a profound reform with the entry into force in 2010, the SNC, which has its base in international normative, more precisely in the IAS/IFRS. The SNC is a model that places emphasis on accounting theory rather than mechanized accounting rules. It is a principles-based accounting system that gives prominence to professional judgment in preparing financial information. The adoption the SNC requires a change in thinking accounting and financial reporting. It is an accounting model that incorporates value judgments, where the conceptual framework should be considered a fundamental theoretical base to support the application of NCRF included in the SNC. This paper aims to highlight the professional judgments underlying the SNC, our objective is to identify situations where value judgments are implicit and analyze their tax impacts for IRC

Visualização em tempo real de um modelo esparso de mistura paramétrica para síntese da BTF

As funções de textura bidirecionais (Bidirectional Texture Functions - BTF) permitem visualizações de alta qualidade de materiais reais, que exibem detalhes complexos na sua aparência, e que não podem ser fielmente representados por funções paramétricas mais simples. Representações fíeis deste tipo de materiais requerem grandes quantidades de dados, dificultando a sua visualização em tempo real. A compressão de BTFs constitui um compromisso entre qualidade visual e tempo de síntese. Este artigo apresenta um visualizador a correr integralmente no GPU, usando um motor de ray tracing, de uma representação recente para BTFs, o Modelo Esparso de Mistura Paramétrica (Sparse Parametric Mixture Model - SPMM). O caso da Esquadrilha de Submarinos

O modo como as mulheres e os homens conseguem encontrar um equilíbrio entre a esfera da família e do trabalho, tem sido considerado um dos maiores desafios da nossa sociedade. Neste sentido, o presente estudo incide sobre o conflito trabalho família nos militares da Esquadrilha de Submarinos da Marinha Portuguesa, avaliando os efeitos que o ambiente de trabalho de suporte à família e o suporte do líder podem ter na redução da perceção do conflito trabalho-família. Foi efetuado um estudo quantitativo com uma amostra de 105 militares, considerando o local onde prestam serviço, a sua categoria, posto, idade e género. Os resultados obtidos revelam que a interferência do trabalho na família correlaciona-se negativamente com o suporte do líder e que o ambiente de trabalho de suporte à família está relacionado positivamente com o conflito trabalho-família. Rejeita-se ainda que o suporte do líder medeia a relação entre o ambiente de trabalho de suporte à família e o conflito trabalho-família. Por fim, efetuou-se análises que visaram a determinação de variáveis com o intuito de encontrar um conjunto de fatores explicativos inerentes ao conjunto de 39 itens do questionário.The way man and woman afford to find the balance between their family domain and their work domain has been one of the main challenges faced by modern society. In this way, this work aims to the work-family conflict in the Portuguese Submarine Squadron, assessing the effects on their family work supportive environment and the leader support that may decline their work-family conflict. It has been conducted a study with a 105 samples of the militaries, having the variables of their job place, category, rank, age and gender. The results revealed the Work-tofamily interference is negatively correlate with the leader support and that the family work supportive environment is positively correlate with the work-family conflict. It’s declined that the leader support mediates the relation between family work supportive environment and work-family conflict. Finally, it has been conducted several analyses, with the main purpose to find a set of explaining factors associated to all 39 items questionnair
