Azores tourism product perceptions : the Influence of the country of origin

    Get PDF
This study focused on the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ARA), which has some features that are considered favorable to the development of tourism and to the interest in the tourism product. However, the region’s geographical dispersion, its high dependence on transportation and the seasonality of the industry constrain its development. The present research aimed to assess tourists’ perception of certain costs (living, accommodation, plane ticket, and transportation to/from the airport), and whether these differ between tourists of different nationalities. The findings show that tourists, both residents and non-residents, have the perception that the cost of living and of the plane ticket are high, while the cost of accommodation and of transportation to the airport is considered normal by most respondents. We concluded that the models differ when applied to residents and non-residents. For non-residents, living in certain countries induces them to express differences in the perception of the costs studied, when compared to individuals that live in other countries.N/

    ¿…More ‘center’ tan ‘shopping’?

    Get PDF
Shopping centers are one of the most striking elements of the contemporary European city, an indispensable place of consumption itself and, increasingly, one of the key places of daily life. For some theorists, these typologies are places where everything is accessible in a comfortable and secure way. For others, they are the epitome of advanced capitalism, in an era in which consumption pervades all dimensions of contemporary life. If notions such as center and periphery, public and private, or nonplace and place, are now challenged by the hybrid nature of these commercial typologies, that is precisely because the city itself has dramatically changed over the past years. In a context in which the shopping centers gradually accumulate the functions of prime sites of consumption and gravitational centers of the metropolitan condition, this article will explore how this commercial formula is progressively affirmed as both the shopping & center of the contemporary European city

UIDB/00657/2020 UIDP/00657/2020This paper presents an Artificial Intelligence approach to mining context and emotions related to olfactory cultural heritage narratives, particularly to fairy tales. We provide an overview of the role of smell and emotions in literature, as well as highlight the importance of olfactory experience and emotions from psychology and linguistic perspectives. We introduce a methodology for extracting smells and emotions from text, as well as demonstrate the context-based visualizations related to smells and emotions implemented in a novel smell tracker tool. The evaluation is performed using a collection of fairy tales from Grimm and Andersen. We find out that fairy tales often connect smell with the emotional charge of situations. The experimental results show that we can detect smells and emotions in fairy tales with an F1 score of 91.62 and 79.2, respectively.publishersversionpublishe

Improving visual attractiveness to enhance city-river integration - a methodological approach for ongoing evaluation

    Get PDF
The relationship between rivers and cities has evolved from a natural coexistence and interdependence to a progressive relationship of segregation and disintegration. This article uses a planning experiment to explore and discuss some concerns about visual attractiveness of city–river landscapes in promoting spatial integration of cities and rivers. It presents a methodological approach integrating expert opinions and public perception questionnaires. This is a contribution to making operational an ongoing aesthetic assessment of different dimensions and viewpoints at the city scale. This approach is illustrated with a case-study in the Lisbon metropolitan area and its main assessment results are integrated in a city–river profile that can be useful in ongoing evaluation processes of river landscapes and urban planning practice

This research, based on the Erikson’s psychosocial development perspective, has as its fundamental goal to study the relations between developmental psychosocial tasks and anxiety in young people. In this study we used a sample of 511 Portuguese young people, with ages between 17 and 26 years, which attended several higher education courses in the Porto area. Globally, results show that a constructive resolution of psychosocial tasks corresponds to a smaller tendency for anxiety. Results also allow the understanding of the specific contribution each stage has concerning the development of different anxious structures. As for gender, results indicate the presence of significant effects for fears, obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, as well as for psychosocial developmental stages.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Lifestyle Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Rural Areas: The Case of Tourism Entrepreneurs

    Get PDF
Lifestyle entrepreneurs play an important role in innovation and sustainability in rural destinations. Their competitiveness depends largely on how they explore their link to the place and generate innovation. To analyze the relationship between the link to the place and innovation, this article uses survey data from a sample of 221 rural lifestyle entrepreneurs. Using PLS-SEM modeling, the results indicate that place familiarity and relational capital positively influence innovation. Furthermore, place familiarity reveals as an important factor for improving relational capital. In its turn, the degree of relational capital contributes positively to the small firm’s knowledge absorption. The results also reveal that, although there is no direct relation between knowledge absorption and innovation, relational capital mediates the relationship between place familiarity and innovation and that there is an indirect relationship between relational capital and innovation, through the mediating effect of knowledge absorption. These results provides important elements for rural tourism destination decision making on innovation and competitiveness
