Constraining Elko Dark Matter at the LHC with Monophoton Events

A mass dimension one fermion, also known as Elko, constitutes a dark matter candidate which might interact with photons at the tree level in a specific fashion. In this work, we investigate the constraints imposed by unitarity and LHC data on this type of interactions using the search for new physics in monophoton events. We found that Elkos which can explain the dark matter relic abundance mainly through electromagnetic interactions are excluded at the 95\%CL by the 8 TeV LHC data for masses up to 1 TeV.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

This research compares two possible networking methods for connecting all Brazilian Air Force Materiel Command units responsible for support and operation of Brazilian Air Force\u27s weapons systems. The network includes the use of dedicated X.25 links, and the use of a virtual Private Network using the Internet (TCP/IP) as the medium of transmission. The Brazilian Air Force Materiel Command, responsible to support operating units over a very large sparse territory, lacks an efficient media of computer communications, which makes it difficult to control the supply chain channels of materiel present in each unit, depots, and warehouses. We studied the network infrastructure necessary to solve this problem, and proposed two different scenarios. One uses the current level of technology based on dedicated X.25 environment, and the other uses the incipient Virtual Private Networking technology and the Internet as the communication medium. The results suggest that the Brazilian Air Force could be able to use the Internet and VPN technology in a moderated secure environment (C2 Level), and could save more than $100,000 per month in comparison to the implementation of the same level of networking using the present X.25 model. This study concludes that the BAF may benefit from the use of the VPN model in a secure and less costly environment, while maintaining the necessary flexibility and high performance to operate in the newly paradigm of distributed environments. Other implications for the Brazilian Air Force regarding Information Warfare issues and recommendations for further study are discussed

Control of compaction on embankment dam core by nuclear density meter and sand cone test

Soil compaction is an essential stage in the construction of earth dams, through the course of history there have been several reports on dam failures that can be linked to inappropriate compaction. Therefore it is essential to evaluate the state of compaction achieved in the field, two commonly used methods to evaluate it are the conventional and nuclear methodologies. The conventional methodology consists in using the sand cone test to access the wet unit weight and the oven method to determinate the fill water content, in the nuclear methodology these parameters are measured with a nuclear density gauge. However in some countries the accuracy of the nuclear gauge measurement relatively to the conventional methodology has been questioned. The present paper establishes a correlational analysis between the results obtained with the sand cone test and the nuclear density-meter, these tests were executed during the quality control operation employed at the trial embankment of an earth dam.publishe

An assessment of geotubes performance in coastal protection

The Ofir spit is located at the estuary of Cavado River (NW coast of Portugal), and is the natural protection of Esposende city, ensuring also the navigability of the river and preventing from the maritime invasion of its estuary or the flooding of the riverine part of that city. It has been subjected to the actions of nature, especially from the Atlantic Ocean, known for its energetic regime and, more recently, those of human activities. Considering that, in Portugal, the use of geosynthetics on coastal protection is not yet a usual solution, it is relevant to investigate it, especially in this case of high-energy wave agitation. The paper presents a summary on the interventions conducted to the sandbank along time, it refers also the solution implemented as well as the monitoring campaign conducted after December 2015, discussing its results and the viability of the structure itself as a permanent solution.publishersversionpublishe

Pollination ecology of the tropical weed Triumfetta semitriloba Jacq. ( tiliaceae), in the south- eastern Brazil

This work aimed to study the pollination ecology of the tropical weed Triumfetta semitriloba Jacq. (Tiliaceae), in Viçosa, South-eastern Brazil, during the flowering season of 1993 and 1994. Two patches located in pasture (P1 and P2) and one patch in a forest trail (P3) were chosen and ten plants on each patch were sorted. The number of opened flowers were counted during one day, in each flowering month and patch. All observed flower visitors were identified and their behavior while visiting flowers was recorded. Frequency of visits to flowered branches was obtained and some pollinator individuals were captured for analysis of pollen load. Flowers are conspicuously yellow and actinomorphic, with five nectaries around the ovary base, and opened sequentially in the afternoon. Flower phenology followed a modified steady-state Gentry's pattern. The number of opened flowers was higher in P2, but differences between months were not homogeneous between patches. Considering behaviour when collecting pollen or nectar, which permitted impregnation of stigma with pollen, visiting frequency and percent of T. semitriloba pollen on pollen load (100% for all of them, except for Augochlorella michaelis which was 81%) the following species were the mainly pollinators: Augochloropsis cupreola, Augochlorella michaelis, Cressomiella aff. sussurans, Cressomiella sussurans, Cressomiella sp., Pseudocentron paulistana, Ceratinula sp1, Ceratinula sp2 and Ceratinula sp3, Melissodes sexcincta, Apis mellifera, Plebeia cf. nigriceps, Plebeia droryana. Frequency of pollinators visitation was not different between patches and not uniform during anthesis. There was a higher pollinator activity between 15:00 and 17:00 hr.Este trabalho tem por objetivo estudar a ecologia da polinização da planta invasora Triumfetta semitriloba Jacq. A fenologia floral seguiu o padrão "steady-state" modificado de Gentry.

    Parallel

In this paper we present Parallel, a videogame with a powerful story of mystery, suspense and puzzle-solving. Parallel provides an interactive storyline where the actions players take throughout the game will define the course of the story and alter events. The environment created in the game is unique and it was improved from testing with several subjects on a prototype of the tutorial. Parallel’s main potential is the sense of immersion it can provide with its obscure environment, dynamic dialogs using an artificial intelligent agent and its interactive storyline.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
