Tunable Double Negative Band Structure from Non-Magnetic Coated Rods
A system of periodic poly-disperse coated nano-rods is considered. Both the
coated nano-rods and host material are non-magnetic. The exterior nano-coating
has a frequency dependent dielectric constant and the rod has a high dielectric
constant. A negative effective magnetic permeability is generated near the Mie
resonances of the rods while the coating generates a negative permittivity
through a field resonance controlled by the plasma frequency of the coating and
the geometry of the crystal. The explicit band structure for the system is
calculated in the sub-wavelength limit. Tunable pass bands exhibiting negative
group velocity are generated and correspond to simultaneously negative
effective dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. These can be
explicitly controlled by adjusting the distance between rods, the coating
thickness, and rod diameters
Required Skills for Teachers: Information Literacy at the Top
European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL) 2017: Information Literacy in the Workplace, held in Saint Malo, France, 18-21 SeptemberThis study seeks to contribute to a reflection on teachers’ training and professional development in the field of information literacy, in Portugal. Aspects regarding teacher training and their role as spreaders of knowledge and multipliers of good practices are problematized. UNESCO’s curriculum for teachers and ACRL guidelines are used methodologically as the central thread of this interpretation. From here we seek to explain how a higher education institution – an Institute of Education -, which is devoted to the professional development of educators, including teachers, has engaged in information literacy actions through training interventions, in recent years. The study concludes that through sharing and dialogue within the librarian profession, but also within the sphere of education professionals - teachers and trainers - the best training practices in university libraries can be consolidated. Report of the 2020-2021 Strategic Engagement Standing Committee
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY For the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), strategic engagement is critical to the success of colleges and schools of pharmacy in expanding pharmacy and public health practice, meeting programmatic needs, and fulfilling institutional missions. The 2020-2021 Strategic Engagement Standing Committee was charged with identifying effective strategies to leverage the temporary expansion of pharmacist practice capabilities granted during the COVID-19 pandemic for sustained practice. The group was also tasked with looking at ways to partner with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), our medicine counterparts to develop a plan for collaborating with them to advance interprofessional practice. In this unique year, all standing committees were charged with reading all the reports last year to put President Lin’s charges into perspective with the hopes of carrying over the overall theme and work of the previous years committee. Overall, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been several expansions on the scope of practice for pharmacists and vary by state. We hope to draw out some of those expansions to see how we can build upon efforts to make those permanent

Atmospheric sampling of Supertyphoon Mireille with NASA DC-8 aircraft on September 27,1991, during PEM-West A
The DC-8 mission of September 27, 1991, was designed to sample air flowing into Typhoon Mireille in the boundary layer, air in the upper tropospheric eye region, and air emerging from the typhoon and ahead of the system, also in the upper troposphere. The objective was to find how a typhoon redistributes trace constituents in the West Pacific region and whether any such redistribution is important on the global scale. The boundary layer air (300 m), in a region to the SE of the eye, contained low mixing ratios of the tracer species O3, CO, C2H6, C2H2, C3H8, C6H6and CS2 but high values of dimethylsulfide (DMS). The eye region relative to the boundary layer, showed somewhat elevated levels of CO, substantially increased levels of O3, CS2 and all nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), and somewhat reduced levels of DMS. Ahead of the eye, CO and the NMHCs remained unchanged, O3 and CS2 showed a modest decrease, and DMS showed a substantial decrease. There was no evidence from lidar cross sections of ozone for the downward entrainment of stratospheric air into the eye region; these sections show that low ozone values were measured in the troposphere. The DMS data suggest substantial entrainment of boundary layer air into the system, particularly into the eye wall region. Estimates of the DMS sulphur flux between the boundary layer and the free troposphere, based on computations of velocity potential and divergent winds, gave values of about 69 μg S m−2 d−1 averaged over a 17.5° grid square encompassing the typhoon. A few hours after sampling with the DC-8, Mireille passed over Oki Island, just to the north of Japan, producing surface values of ozone of 5.5 ppbv. These O3 levels are consistent with the low tropospheric values found by lidar and are more typical of equatorial regions. We suggest that the central eye region may act like a Taylor column which has moved poleward from low latitudes. The high-altitude photochemical environment within Typhoon Mireille was found to be quite active as evidenced by significant levels of measured gas phase H2O2 and CH3OOH and model-computed levels of OH
Discovery of water vapour in the carbon star V Cygni from observations with Herschel/HIFI
We report the discovery of water vapour toward the carbon star V Cygni. We
have used Herschel's HIFI instrument, in dual beam switch mode, to observe the
1(11) - 0(00) para-water transition at 1113.3430 GHz in the upper sideband of
the Band 4b receiver. The observed spectral line profile is nearly parabolic,
but with a slight asymmetry associated with blueshifted absorption, and the
integrated antenna temperature is 1.69 \pm 0.17 K km/s. This detection of
thermal water vapour emission, carried out as part of a small survey of water
in carbon-rich stars, is only the second such detection toward a carbon-rich
AGB star, the first having been obtained by the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy
Satellite toward IRC+10216. For an assumed ortho-to-para ratio of 3 for water,
the observed line intensity implies a water outflow rate ~ (3 - 6) E-5 Earth
masses per year and a water abundance relative to H2 of ~ (2-5) E-6. This value
is a factor of at least 1E+4 larger than the expected photospheric abundance in
a carbon-rich environment, and - as in IRC+10216 - raises the intriguing
possibility that the observed water is produced by the vapourisation of
orbiting comets or dwarf planets. However, observations of the single line
observed to date do not permit us to place strong constraints upon the spatial
distribution or origin of the observed water, but future observations of
additional transitions will allow us to determine the inner radius of the
H2O-emitting zone, and the H2O ortho-to-para ratio, and thereby to place

Symptoms and quality of life in late stage Parkinson syndromes: a longitudinal community study of predictive factors
BACKGROUND
Palliative care is increasingly offered earlier in the cancer trajectory but rarely in Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease(IPD), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy(PSP) or Multiple System Atrophy(MSA). There is little longitudinal data of people with late stage disease to understand levels of need. We aimed to determine how symptoms and quality of life of these patients change over time; and what demographic and clinical factors predicted changes.
METHODS
We recruited 82 patients into a longitudinal study, consenting patients with a diagnosis of IPD, MSA or PSP, stages 3-5 Hoehn and Yahr(H&Y). At baseline and then on up to 3 occasions over one year, we collected self-reported demographic, clinical, symptom, palliative and quality of life data, using Parkinson's specific and generic validated scales, including the Palliative care Outcome Scale (POS). We tested for predictors using multivariable analysis, adjusting for confounders.
FINDINGS
Over two thirds of patients had severe disability, over one third being wheelchair-bound/bedridden. Symptoms were highly prevalent in all conditions - mean (SD) of 10.6(4.0) symptoms. More than 50% of the MSA and PSP patients died over the year. Over the year, half of the patients showed either an upward (worsening, 24/60) or fluctuant (8/60) trajectory for POS and symptoms. The strongest predictors of higher levels of symptoms at the end of follow-up were initial scores on POS (AOR 1.30; 95%CI:1.05-1.60) and being male (AOR 5.18; 95% CI 1.17 to 22.92), both were more predictive than initial H&Y scores.
INTERPRETATION
The findings point to profound and complex mix of non-motor and motor symptoms in patients with late stage IPD, MSA and PSP. Symptoms are not resolved and half of the patients deteriorate. Palliative problems are predictive of future symptoms, suggesting that an early palliative assessment might help screen for those in need of earlier intervention
Hydrides in Young Stellar Objects: Radiation tracers in a protostar-disk-outflow system
Context: Hydrides of the most abundant heavier elements are fundamental
molecules in cosmic chemistry. Some of them trace gas irradiated by UV or
X-rays. Aims: We explore the abundances of major hydrides in W3 IRS5, a
prototypical region of high-mass star formation. Methods: W3 IRS5 was observed
by HIFI on the Herschel Space Observatory with deep integration (about 2500 s)
in 8 spectral regions. Results: The target lines including CH, NH, H3O+, and
the new molecules SH+, H2O+, and OH+ are detected. The H2O+ and OH+ J=1-0 lines
are found mostly in absorption, but also appear to exhibit weak emission
(P-Cyg-like). Emission requires high density, thus originates most likely near
the protostar. This is corroborated by the absence of line shifts relative to
the young stellar object (YSO). In addition, H2O+ and OH+ also contain strong
absorption components at a velocity shifted relative to W3 IRS5, which are
attributed to foreground clouds. Conclusions: The molecular column densities
derived from observations correlate well with the predictions of a model that
assumes the main emission region is in outflow walls, heated and irradiated by
