Probing flavor changing interactions in hadron collisions
The subprocess in the two-Higgs-doublet model with
flavor-changing scalar couplings is examined at the one loop level. With
perturbative QCD factorization theorem, the corresponding cross sections for
hadron-hadron collisions are computed numerically. The results are applicable
to the whole mass range of the weakly coupled Higgs bosons. In case we could
efficiently exclude the severe backgrounds of the
production signal, probing the flavor-changing top-charm-scalar vertex at

Vegetation response to invasive Tamarix control in southwestern U.S. rivers: a collaborative study including 416 sites
Most studies assessing vegetation response following control of invasive Tamarix trees along southwestern U.S. rivers have been small in scale (e.g., river reach), or at a regional scale but with poor spatial-temporal replication, and most have not included testing the effects of a now widely used biological control. We monitored plant composition following Tamarix control along hydrologic, soil, and climatic gradients in 244 treated and 172 reference sites across six U.S. states. This represents the largest comprehensive assessment to date on the vegetation response to the four most common Tamarix control treatments. Biocontrol by a defoliating beetle (treatment 1) reduced the abundance of Tamarix less than active removal by mechanically using hand and chain-saws (2), heavy machinery (3) or burning (4). Tamarix abundance also decreased with lower temperatures, higher precipitation, and follow-up treatments for Tamarix resprouting. Native cover generally increased over time in active Tamarix removal sites, however, the increases observed were small and was not consistently increased by active revegetation. Overall, native cover was correlated to permanent stream flow, lower grazing pressure, lower soil salinity and temperatures, and higher precipitation. Species diversity also increased where Tamarix was removed. However, Tamarix treatments, especially those generating the highest disturbance (burning and heavy machinery), also often promoted secondary invasions of exotic forbs. The abundance of hydrophytic species was much lower in treated than in reference sites, suggesting that management of southwestern U.S. rivers has focused too much on weed control, overlooking restoration of fluvial processes that provide habitat for hydrophytic and floodplain vegetation. These results can help inform future management of Tamarix-infested rivers to restore hydrogeomorphic processes, increase native biodiversity and reduce abundance of noxious species

Quality Function Deployment and operational design decisions – A healthcare infrastructure development case study
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how Quality Function Deployment (QFD) can enhance a healthcare organisation’s strategic operational alignment, by synchronising the infrastructure design with the service intention. In this empirical paper, a case study of a £15 million infrastructure development has been used as the unique context to assess and test the experimental findings. QFD was utilised in order to capture and transform the requirements of decision-makers, providers, patients and local communities’ into both service and building design for Project K, a healthcare infrastructure, in the UK. QFD was implemented after the public consultation. The large amount of qualitative data collected from the public consultation was analysed using thematic analysis, which was used as the main QFD inputs. A series of eight facilitated workshops enabled a cross-functional team of 10 high-ranking managers to optimise the future infrastructure features. Two full iterations of the QFD results are presented. Using QFD generated effectiveness and efficiency by creating an information exchange platform and providing the stakeholders with a framework to optimise the decision-making. This paper makes a practical contribution by empirically testing the QFD modelling and providing evidence of its implementation within the complex, dynamic and evolving nature of the healthcare built environment sector. Moreover, from an academic perspective, this study makes a contribution by responding to the call inviting scholars to grow and advance the embryonic and undeveloped research of QFD application in the construction industry (Cudney and Gillis, 2016; Dikmen et al., 2005 and John et al., 2014)
Higgs Boson Bounds in Three and Four Generation Scenarios
In light of recent experimental results, we present updated bounds on the
lightest Higgs boson mass in the Standard Model (SM) and in the Minimal
Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). The vacuum stability
lower bound on the pure SM Higgs boson mass when the SM is taken to be valid up
to the Planck scale lies above the MSSM lightest Higgs boson mass upper bound
for a large amount of SUSY parameter space. If the lightest Higgs boson is
detected with a mass M_{H} < 134 GeV (150 GeV) for a top quark mass M_{top} =
172 GeV (179 GeV), it may indicate the existence of a fourth generation of
fermions. The region of inconsistency is removed and the MSSM is salvagable for
such values of M_{H} if one postulates the existence of a fourth generation of
leptons and quarks with isodoublet degenerate masses M_{L} and M_{Q} such that
60 GeV 170 GeV.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. To be published in Physical Review
Millimeter-wave Signature of Strange Matter Stars
One of the most important questions in the study of compact objects is the
nature of pulsars, including whether they consist of neutron matter or strange
quark matter (SQM). However, few mechanisms for distinguishing between these
two possibilities have been proposed. The purpose of this paper is to show that
a strange star (one made of SQM) will have a vibratory mode with an oscillation
frequency of approximately 250 GHz (millimeter wave). This mode corresponds to
motion of the center of the expected crust of normal matter relative to the
center of the strange quark core, without distortion of either. Radiation from
currents generated in the crust at the mode frequency would be a SQM signature.
We also consider effects of stellar rotation, estimate power emission and
signal-to-noise ratio, and discuss briefly possible mechanisms for exciting the

Is youth unemployment really the major worry? (AOM)
Youth unemployment is neither the only nor the basic problem of the European labour market. The comparative analysis of unemployment data demonstrates that the unemployment of older people is even more serious. The article proves that the weight of young people in total unemployment has as a tendency been declining in the “inner periphery” of the EU, among them in Central and Eastern European member states (CEECs). The trend is just the opposite in the developed or “core” countries of the Union where youngsters took a higher share in total unemployment in 2012 than 10-12 years ago. In Europe there are millions of young people beyond the active unemployed who do not want to work or think they cannot find a job that fulfils their expectations and refuse to take part in any kind of education or training (NEETs-“Not in Employment, Education or Training”). By estimating the rate of NEETs in the adult population the article claims that the NEETs-phenomenon is not the differentia specifica of the youth. At the end the article details two suggestions for the mitigation of the problem. It concludes that the joblessness in Europe is an old and tendencially worsening problem that cannot be solved by particular policies

Low Incidence of Chest Wall Pain with a Risk-Adapted Lung Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy Approach Using Three or Five Fractions Based on Chest Wall Dosimetry
Purpose To examine the frequency and potential of dose-volume predictors for chest wall (CW) toxicity (pain and/or rib fracture) for patients receiving lung stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) using treatment planning methods to minimize CW dose and a risk-adapted fractionation scheme. Methods: We reviewed data from 72 treatment plans, from 69 lung SBRT patients with at least one year of follow-up or CW toxicity, who were treated at our center between 2010 and 2013. Treatment plans were optimized to reduce CW dose and patients received a risk-adapted fractionation of 18 Gy×3 fractions (54 Gy total) if the CW V30 was less than 30 mL or 10–12 Gy×5 fractions (50–60 Gy total) otherwise. The association between CW toxicity and patient characteristics, treatment parameters and dose metrics, including biologically equivalent dose, were analyzed using logistic regression. Results: With a median follow-up of 20 months, 6 (8.3%) patients developed CW pain including three (4.2%) grade 1, two (2.8%) grade 2 and one (1.4%) grade 3. Five (6.9%) patients developed rib fractures, one of which was symptomatic. No significant associations between CW toxicity and patient and dosimetric variables were identified on univariate nor multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Optimization of treatment plans to reduce CW dose and a risk-adapted fractionation strategy of three or five fractions based on the CW V30 resulted in a low incidence of CW toxicity. Under these conditions, none of the patient characteristics or dose metrics we examined appeared to be predictive of CW pain
Bacterially mediated removal of phosphorus and cycling of nitrate and sulfate in the waste stream of a "zero-discharge" recirculating mariculture system
Simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus by microbial biofilters has been used in a variety of water treatment systems including treatment systems in aquaculture. In this study, phosphorus, nitrate and sulfate cycling in the anaerobic loop of a zero-discharge, recirculating mariculture system was investigated using detailed geochemical measurements in the sludge layer of the digestion basin. High concentrations of nitrate and sulfate, circulating in the overlying water (~15 mM), were removed by microbial respiration in the sludge resulting in a sulfide accumulation of up to 3 mM. Modelling of the observed S and O isotopic ratios in the surface sludge suggested that, with time, major respiration processes shifted from heterotrophic nitrate and sulfate reduction to autotrophic nitrate reduction. The much higher inorganic P content of the sludge relative to the fish feces is attributed to conversion of organic P to authigenic apatite. This conclusion is supported by: (a) X-ray diffraction analyses, which pointed to an accumulation of a calcium phosphate mineral phase that was different from P phases found in the feces, (b) the calculation that the pore waters of the sludge were highly oversaturated with respect to hydroxyapatite (saturation index = 4.87) and (c) there was a decrease in phosphate (and in the Ca/Na molar ratio) in the pore waters simultaneous with an increase in ammonia showing there had to be an additional P removal process at the same time as the heterotrophic breakdown of organic matter
