A concept of water usage efficiency to support water reduction in manufacturing industry
Increasing pressures on freshwater supplies, continuity of supply uncertainties, and costs linked to legislative compliance, such as for wastewater treatment, are driving water use reduction up the agenda of manufacturing businesses. A survey is presented of current analysis methods and tools generally available to industry to analyze environmental impact of, and to manage, water use. These include life cycle analysis, water footprinting, strategic planning, water auditing, and process integration. It is identified that the methods surveyed do not provide insight into the operational requirements from individual process steps for water, instead taking such requirements as a given. We argue that such understanding is required for a proactive approach to long-term water usage reduction, in which sustainability is taken into account at the design stage for both process and product. As a first step to achieving this, we propose a concept of water usage efficiency which can be used to evaluate current and proposed processes and products. Three measures of efficiency are defined, supported by a framework of a detailed categorization and representation of water flows within a production system. The calculation of the efficiency measures is illustrated using the example of a tomato sauce production line. Finally, the elements required to create a useable tool based on the efficiency measures are discussed
AdS/CFT correspondence via R-current correlation functions revisited
Motivated by realizing open/closed string duality in the work by Gopakumar
[Phys. Rev. D70:025009,2004], we study two and three-point correlation
functions of R-current vector fields in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. These
correlation functions in free field limit can be derived from the worldline
formalism and written as heat kernel integrals in the position space. We show
that reparametrizing these integrals converts them to the expected AdS
supergravity results which are known in terms of bulk to boundary propagator.
We expect that this reparametrization corresponds to transforming open string

Prediction of long and short time rheological behavior in soft glassy materials
We present an effective time approach to predict long and short time
rheological behavior of soft glassy materials from experiments carried out over
practical time scales. Effective time approach takes advantage of relaxation
time dependence on aging time that allows time-aging time superposition even
when aging occurs over the experimental timescales. Interestingly experiments
on variety of soft materials demonstrate that the effective time approach
successfully predicts superposition for diverse aging regimes ranging from
sub-aging to hyper-aging behaviors. This approach can also be used to predict
behavior of any response function in molecular as well as spin glasses.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Predictors of suboptimal CD4 response among women achieving virologic suppression in a randomized antiretroviral treatment trial, Africa
Background: A subset of HIV-1 infected patients starting highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) experience suboptimal CD4 response (SCR) despite virologic suppression. We studied the rate of and risk factors for SCR among women starting HAART in the ACTG A5208 study conducted in 7 African countries. 741 HAART-naive women with screening CD4 count <200 cells/μL were randomized to start HAART with Tenofovir/Emtricitabine plus either Nevirapine or Lopinavir/Ritonavir. Methods: This analysis includes the 625 women who remained on-study through 48 weeks without experiencing protocol-defined virologic failure. We defined SCR as < 100 CD4 cells/μL increase from baseline and absolute CD4 cell count < 350 cells/μL, both at 48 weeks after HAART initiation. Results: The baseline characteristics for the 625 women prior to HAART initiation were: median age 33 years, screening CD4 count 134 cells/μL, and HIV-1 RNA 5.1 log10 copies/mL; 184 (29%) were WHO Stage 3 or 4. Seventy one (11%) of these 625 women experienced SCR. Baseline factors independently associated with increased odds of SCR included older age, lower HIV-1 RNA, positive Hepatitis B surface antigen, and site location. At 96 weeks, only 6% of the SCR group had CD4 ≥ 350 cells/μL compared with 67% in the non SCR group. Conclusion: After starting HAART, 11% of women with virologic suppression through 48 weeks experienced SCR. These patients were also less likely to achieve CD4 ≥ 350 cells/μL by 96 weeks. The underlying causes and long term clinical implications of SCR deserve further investigation. Trial registration Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT0008950
Morphological properties of slender Ca II H fibrils observed by SUNRISE II
We use seeing-free high spatial resolution Ca II H data obtained by the
SUNRISE observatory to determine properties of slender fibrils in the lower
solar chromosphere. In this work we use intensity images taken with the SUFI
instrument in the Ca II H line during the second scientific flight of the
SUNRISE observatory to identify and track elongated bright structures. After
the identification, we analyze theses structures in order to extract their
morphological properties. We identify 598 slender Ca II H fibrils (SCFs) with
an average width of around 180 km, a length between 500 km and 4000 km, an
average lifetime of ~400 s, and an average curvature of 0.002 arcsec^-1. The
maximum lifetime of the SCFs within our time series of 57 minutes is ~2000 s.
We discuss similarities and differences of the SCFs with other small-scale,
chromospheric structures such as spicules of type I and II, or Ca II K fibrils.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement

Kinematics of Magnetic Bright Features in the Solar Photosphere
Convective flows are known as the prime means of transporting magnetic fields
on the solar surface. Thus, small magnetic structures are good tracers of the
turbulent flows. We study the migration and dispersal of magnetic bright
features (MBFs) in intergranular areas observed at high spatial resolution with
Sunrise/IMaX. We describe the flux dispersal of individual MBFs as a diffusion
process whose parameters are computed for various areas in the quiet Sun and
the vicinity of active regions from seeing-free data. We find that magnetic
concentrations are best described as random walkers close to network areas
(diffusion index, gamma=1.0), travelers with constant speeds over a
supergranule (gamma=1.9-2.0), and decelerating movers in the vicinity of flux
emergence and/or within active regions (gamma=1.4-1.5). The three types of
regions host MBFs with mean diffusion coefficients of 130 km^2/s, 80-90 km^2/s,
and 25-70 km^2/s, respectively. The MBFs in these three types of regions are
found to display a distinct kinematic behavior at a confidence level in excess

IMPaCT - Integration of Missions, Programs, and Core Technologies
IMPaCT enables comprehensive information on current NASA missions, prospective future missions, and the technologies that NASA is investing in, or considering investing in, to be accessed from a common Web-based interface. It allows dependencies to be established between missions and technology, and from this, the benefits of investing in individual technologies can be determined. The software also allows various scenarios for future missions to be explored against resource constraints, and the nominal cost and schedule of each mission to be modified in an effort to fit within a prescribed budget
Cotrimoxazole Prophylaxis and Risk of Severe Anemia or Severe Neutropenia in HAART-Exposed, HIV-Uninfected Infants
Background: Prophylactic cotrimoxazole is recommended for infants born to HIV-infected mothers. However, cotrimoxazole may increase the risk of severe anemia or neutropenia. Methods: We compared the proportion of HIV-exposed uninfected (HIV-EU) infants experiencing incident severe anemia (and separately, severe neutropenia) between a prospective cohort receiving prophylactic cotrimoxazole from 1 to 6 months vs. infants from two prior trials who did not receive cotrimoxazole. Infants were from rural and urban communities in southern Botswana. Results: A total of 1705 HIV-EU infants were included. Among these 645 (37.8%) were fed with iron-supplemented formula from birth. Severe anemia developed in 87 (5.1%) infants, and severe neutropenia in 164 (9.6%) infants. In an analysis stratified by infant feeding method, there were no significant differences in the risk of severe anemia by prophylactic cotrimoxazole exposure–risk difference, −0.69% (95% confidence interval [CI] −2.1 to 0.76%). Findings were similar in multivariable analysis, adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 0.35 (95% CI 0.07 to 1.65). There were also no significant differences observed for severe neutropenia by cotrimoxazole exposure, risk difference 2.0% (95% CI −1.3 to 5.2%) and aOR 0.80 (95% CI 0.33 to 1.93). Conclusions: Severe anemia and severe neutropenia were infrequent among HIV-exposed uninfected infants receiving cotrimoxazole from 1–6 months of age. Concerns regarding hematologic toxicity should not limit the use of prophylactic cotrimoxazole in HIV-exposed uninfected infants.
