Local Visual Microphones: Improved Sound Extraction from Silent Video

Sound waves cause small vibrations in nearby objects. A few techniques exist in the literature that can extract sound from video. In this paper we study local vibration patterns at different image locations. We show that different locations in the image vibrate differently. We carefully aggregate local vibrations and produce a sound quality that improves state-of-the-art. We show that local vibrations could have a time delay because sound waves take time to travel through the air. We use this phenomenon to estimate sound direction. We also present a novel algorithm that speeds up sound extraction by two to three orders of magnitude and reaches real-time performance in a 20KHz video.Comment: Accepted to BMVC 201

Computer Simulation of the Effects of Muscle Co-activation and Joint Stiffness on Postural Stability

    Get PDF
Postural stability is affected by several biomechanical factors including posture, foot placement, intrinsic muscle stiffness, and joint stiffness due to muscle co-activation. Increasing natural postural stability could make balance control easier for individuals with diminished postural responses. However, it is not clear which biomechanical factors most significantly contribute to the natural postural stability. The objective of this thesis is to simulate the effect of intrinsic muscle stiffness and muscle co-activation on the postural stability using a musculoskeletal computer model subjected to support-platform perturbations. We developed a customized static-optimization method to encourage co-activation using joint stiffness as an intermediate variable to improve postural stability. To this end, we also implemented a short-range stiffness muscle model and compared its stabilizing effects to a standard Hill-type muscle model. Our result showed that co-activation of muscles resulted in higher joint stiffness and higher postural stability and that intrinsic muscle short-range stiffness contributed significantly to postural stability

In this thesis, we propose a new framework for Knowledge Distillation by introducing a Layer-wise Progressive Teacher. In this regard, we propose a method to create soft targets in different levels of complexity by obtaining the probabilities from the intermediate layers of the teacher network. Our method is specially designed for the cases that there is a large gap between the teacher and the student which makes it harder for the student to mimic the teacher. In addition, we proposed focalized teacher as a method to train a better teacher for the student. The experimental results show that our method gets significantly better results in comparison with existing knowledge distillation methods.1 Introduction 1 1.1 Background. 1 1.2 Motivation 3 1.3 ProposedMethod 4 1.4 Datasets. 5 2 Related Work 7 2.1 Theory of Transfer Learning 7 2.2 Applications. 8 3 Focalized Teacher 10 3.1 Overview 10 3.2 LabelCorrection 11 3.3 FocalizedTeacher 12 3.4 Experimental Results 13 4 Layer-wise Progressive Knowledge Distillation 16 4.1 BackgroundandNotations . 16 4.2 Layer-wiseKnowledgeDistillation. 17 4.3 ProgressiveTeacher. 19 4.4 Experimental Results 20 4.4.1 TemperatureAnalysis . 21 4.4.2 DistanceMetric. 23 4.4.3 Distilled Knowledge from an intermediate layer . . . . . . . . 24 4.4.4 ProgressiveTeacher 27 4.4.5 ComparisonwithotherKDmethods 29 5 Conclusion 5.1 SummaryoftheThesis . 32 5.2 FutureWorks 32 5.2.1 Progressive Teacher Assistant based Knowledge Distillation . 33Maste

Technical Overview of the Net Metering in Lebanon

    Get PDF
In order to realize the best practices to allow the individuals participate in renewable energy production, a collection of legislation was ratified, and a set of decisions was introduced to encourage the prosumer concept. This notion, which is called Net Metering (NEM), is a billing mechanism that credits PV solar system owners for the energy injected to the grid. Lebanon adopts the NEM policy to reduce the demand and boost the grid through increasing the generation capacity. The decline of solar equipment cost encourages people to subscribe to the NEM service by utilizing the PV solar systems. The implementation of the NEM service provides the customers with leverage over their electricity bills. However, connecting the home micro grid into the vast grid is not easy. It imposes many technical challenges which are discussed in this article

A Content Analysis of Colour-term Conceptual Metaphors in Modern Persian Poetry

    Get PDF
This study sought answers related to the distribution of colour terms in Persian poems and their metaphoric reflection in poets' beliefs, ideas, or values. In so doing, 137 Persian verses from two poetry books with colour terms in content were considered for the analysis. Four raters who studied literature of Persian scrutinized the verses for the evaluation of the colour metaphoric conceptualizations. To validate the raters' suggestions, a focus group of sixteen commented on the recommended connotations. Results indicated that colours are not similarly distributed in Persian poems, are used with different conceptualizations and stood for both positive and negative connotations. Therefore, since colours are part of the authors' and speakers' daily lives to express information, knowledge of metaphoric expressions is suggested to be an inseparable part of language classes

Man, God and their relationship with each other is one of the most fundamental topics in mystical literature. Mystical poets, as the possessors of the gentle and sensitive divine spirit, have included the relationship between God and man in the form of grace and pleasantness, which has become one of the deepest phrases of their works. This study has examined the relationship between God and man in a library and in a comparative way in the tragedy of Attar Neyshabouri and Divan Jami. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between God and man based on the basic human principles of help, guidance and love ... which shows that the relationship between God and man is one of the important concerns of these two mystics and they have different ways and factors to achieve It has provided; The most important results obtained from this research are that the works of Attar and Jami are full of the manifestation of the relationship between God and man, and this relationship is sometimes quoted from the language of the poet and sometimes from the language of fictional characters. The recklessness, boldness and intimacy that exist in the poems of these two have given a special depth to their verses that give the reader a feeling of tenderness and the peak of servitude, while the loving relationship of God has been the highest type of relationship

Mix Design Effects on the Durability of Alkali-Activated Slag Concrete in a Hydrochloric Acid Environment

    Get PDF
Because of its high strength, energy reduction, and low environmental impact, researchers have encouraged considering alkali-activated slag concrete (AASC) as a potential alternative to conventional concrete. In this study, the impact of mix design parameters on the durability of AASC, made with ground granulated blast furnace slag and activated with different alkaline solutions (NaOH, KOH, and Na2SiO3 ) immersed up to six months in a hydrochloric acid bath with pH = 3, has been investigated. A total of 13 mix designs were made in a way that, in addition to the type of alkaline solution, considered three other parameters, namely the molarity of alkaline solutions, the weight ratio of alkaline solutions to slag, and the weight ratio of alkaline solutions to sodium silicate. Visual inspections displayed that the AASC samples almost remained intact after exposure to an HCl acid solution with pH = 3 for up to 6 months, while the OPC sample experienced deleterious deterioration. The results clearly show that AASC outperformed OPC concrete when it comes to durability in an HCl acid solution. The strength reduction and weight loss of AASC compared with OPC concrete were approximately one-tenth and one-fifth, respectively. The AASC samples containing potassium hydroxide showed a higher strength reduction and weight loss in the HCl acid solution than the samples made with sodium hydroxide
