Superadiabatic spin-preserving control of a single-spin qubit in a double quantum dot with spin–orbit interaction
A protocol for controlling the localization of an electron with a fixed projection of spin between two quantum dots in a material with spin-orbit (SO) interaction is studied. Due to SO coupling, the manipulation of the electron shuttling between both quantum dots also leads to a mixing between spin projections near to the avoided crossing of levels. We use a transitionless quantum driving approach, neglecting SO interaction, to analytically design simple electric and magnetic pulses able to rapidly drive the electron along an adiabatic Landau–Zener manifold. We show that the same fields in the presence of SO interaction can also give a fast high-fidelity transition between the qubit states. The performance of the proposed protocol is assessed in the presence of SO interactions of typical semiconductor materials. It is shown that it provides a fast and efficient spin-conserving method for controlling the electron position in a double quantum dot.Fil: Gomez, Sergio Santiago. Deputized Brokers: A Technique for a Case Study of Conservative Think Tanks in 1990s Welfare Reform
This study proposes a novel analytical technique in a case study of think tank brokerage. As brokers, think tanks structurally link foundations and media, yet they do so as representatives of a policy network consisting of corporate funders and affiliated think tanks. Print media sought their policy analysis regarding the welfare system and prescriptions for reform. Network and content methods are the bases for the presentation of the technique. The coupling of results from each of the technique\u27s components shows how resources tie actors, as well as how their conversion from one form to another is the basis for a newfound understanding of structural brokerage. Taken together, the findings demonstrate the significance of representative brokerage that deepens the meaning of the policy advocacy mission of these organizations
Cosmic web alignments with the shape, angular momentum and peculiar velocities of dark matter haloes
We study the alignment of dark matter haloes with the cosmic web
characterized by the tidal and velocity shear fields. We focus on the alignment
of their shape, angular momentum and peculiar velocities. We use a cosmological
N-body simulation that allows to study dark matter halos spanning almost five
orders of magnitude in mass (-) and
spatial scales of - Mpc to define the cosmic web. We find
that the halo shape presents the strongest alignment along the smallest tidal
eigenvector, e.g. along filaments and walls, with a signal that gets stronger
as the halo mass increases. In the case of the velocity shear field only
massive halos tend to have their shapes aligned
along the largest tidal eigenvector; that is, perpendicular to filaments and
walls. For the angular momentum we find alignment signals only for halos more
massive than both in the tidal and velocity shear
webs where the preferences are for it to be parallel to the middle eigenvector;
perpendicular to filaments and parallel to walls. Finally, the peculiar
velocities show a strong alignment along the smallest tidal eigenvector for all
halo masses; halos move along filaments and walls. In the velocity shear the
same alignment is present but weaker and only for haloes less massive than
. Our results clearly show that the two different
algorithms we used to define the cosmic web describe different physical aspects
of non-linear collapse and should be used in a complementary way to understand
the effect of the cosmic web on galaxy evolution.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS accepte
The incidence of the host galaxy in microvariability observations of quasars
The incidence of a host galaxy in aperture photometry of active galactic nuclei is studied by means of actual and simulated CCD observations. Our goal is to evaluate the importance of spurious variations, introduced by seeing fluctuations during the observations, in the differential light curves used to study optical microvariability. Repeated CCD observations during two consecutive nights were used to obtain time-resolved aperture photometry for the BL Lac object PKS 2316-423, which is located at the center of a conspicuous elliptical galaxy, and for several field stars. The blazar seems to be variable according to standard variability criteria; however we show that the observed differential magnitude variations are strongly correlated with seeing fluctuations during the nights. Moreover, another galaxy within the same CCD field shows nearly identical variations, clearly indicating that such variations are artifacts of the aperture photometry. Simulated observations of quasars within host galaxies of different morphologies and spanning a wide range of luminosities were also used to evaluate the effects of changing seeing conditions. The results show that spurious differential magnitude variations due to seeing fluctuations are larger for active nuclei within brighter hosts, particularly when small photometric apertures (about the seeing FWHM in radius) are used. According to our results, several recommendations are given to future observers.Fil: Cellone, Sergio Aldo.
Systematic uncertainties from halo asphericity in dark matter searches
Although commonly assumed to be spherical, dark matter halos are predicted to
be non-spherical by N-body simulations and their asphericity has a potential
impact on the systematic uncertainties in dark matter searches. The evaluation
of these uncertainties is the main aim of this work, where we study the impact
of aspherical dark matter density distributions in Milky-Way-like halos on
direct and indirect searches. Using data from the large N-body cosmological
simulation Bolshoi, we perform a statistical analysis and quantify the
systematic uncertainties on the determination of local dark matter density and
the so-called factors for dark matter annihilations and decays from the
galactic center. We find that, due to our ignorance about the extent of the
non-sphericity of the Milky Way dark matter halo, systematic uncertainties can
be as large as 35%, within the 95% most probable region, for a spherically
averaged value for the local density of 0.3-0.4 GeV/cm. Similarly,
systematic uncertainties on the factors evaluated around the galactic
center can be as large as 10% and 15%, within the 95% most probable region, for
dark matter annihilations and decays, respectively.Comment: 29 pages, 6 artistic figures, version accepted for publication in

Extreme photo-polarimetric behaviour of the blazar AO 0235+164
We present optical photo-polarimetric observations with high temporal
resolution of the blazar AO 0235+164. Our data, the first to test the
photo-polarimetric behaviour of this object at very short time-scales, show
significant micro-variability in total flux, colour index, linear polarization
degree, and position angle. Strong inter-night variations are also detected for
these parameters. Although no correlation between colour index and total flux
was found, our data seem to support the general bluer-when-brighter trend
already known for this object. The polarization degree, in turn, shows no
correlation with total flux, but a clear trend in the sense that colour index
is redder (the spectrum is softer) when the measured polarization is higher.Comment: Accepted by MNRAS (Letters), 5 page
