Influence of the Compaction Pressure and Sintering Temperature on the Mechanical Properties of Porous Titanium for Biomedical Applications

    Get PDF
In the present work, the use of porous titanium is proposed as a solution to the difference in stiffness between the implant and bone tissue, avoiding the bone resorption. Conventional powder metallurgical technique is an industrially established route for fabrication of this type of material. The results are discussed in terms of the influence of compaction pressure and sintering temperature on the porosity (volumetric fraction, size, and morphology) and the quality of the sintering necks. A very good agreement between the predicted values obtained using a simple 2D finite element model, the experimental uniaxial compression behavior, and the analytical model proposed by Nielsen, has been found for both the Young’s modulus and the yield strength. The porous samples obtained by the loose sintering technique and using temperatures between 1000 °C −1100 °C (about 40% of total porosity) are recommended for achieving a suitable biomechanical behavior for cortical bone partial replacement.Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of the State General Administration of Spain grant MAT2015-71284-

However, the range of physics topics that these instruments can tackle is exceedingly wide and diverse. Neutrinos coming from outside the Earth, in association with othermessengers, can contribute to clarify the question of the mechanisms that power the astrophysical accelerators which are known to exist from the observation of high-energy cosmic and gamma rays. Cosmic neutrinos can also be used to bring relevant information about the nature of dark matter, to study the intrinsic properties of neutrinos and to look for physics beyond the Standard Model. Likewise, atmospheric neutrinos can be used to study an ample variety of particle physics issues, such as neutrino oscillation phenomena, the determination of the neutrino mass ordering, non-standard neutrino interactions, neutrino decays and a diversity of other physics topics. In this article, we review a selected number of these topics, chosen on the basis of their scientific relevance and the involvement in their study of the Spanish physics community working in the KM3NeT and ANTARES neutrino telescopes.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion, Investigacion y Universidades (MCIU) PGC2018-096663-B-C41 A-C42 B-C43 B-C44MCIU/FEDERGeneralitat Valenciana PROMETEO/2020/019GenT CIDEGENT/2018/034 2020/049 2021/023Junta de Andalucia A-FQM-053-UGR1

To access the final edited and published work see: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jpcc.0c00729This work reports a detailed study of the adsorption of thiourea and seven monosubstituted thiourea derivatives on the Au(111) surface based on self-consistent periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We included in our analysis the most stable cis and trans configurations for each considered monosubstituted derivative. Different functional groups have been selected for the derivatives in order to address the electron-donating/withdrawing effect on the strength of the molecule–metal interaction. The comparison of the cis- and trans-derivatives revealed interactions of different nature between the molecules and the Au(111) surface. We have been able to disentangle these interactions analyzing the charge density difference plots, the projected density of states (pDOS) and the Non-Covalent Interactions (NCI). For the non-substituted thiourea and all the studied derivatives, besides the strong S–Au bond, it has been observed an Au···H–N interaction similar to a hydrogen bonding, which is caused by the charge transfer from the molecules to the Au(111) surface inducing a charge counterbalancing: Auδ−Hδ+Nδ−. Furthermore, π–Au interactions between the functional group of the derivatives and the Au(111) surface, mainly observed for the cis-derivatives, were highlighted by the NCI plots. In some particular cases it was also possible to distinguish long-range interactions of the type lone pair–Au. The present results provide insight into a new kind of organic molecule–metal surface interaction, opening the way for the synthesis of potential nanodevices with diverse applications such as sensing (biosensors or atmospheric sensors), optoelectronics, pollution control, or energy conversionThis work was partially supported by the “Proyecto Nacional de Ciencias Básicas”, Cuba Code P223LH001-079 “Absorción de moléculas organosulfuradas en superficies métalicas” and by Project CTQ2016-76061-P of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. MC64-Cluster: Many-Core CPU Cluster Architecture and Performance Analysis in B-Tree Searches

    Get PDF
The MC64-Cluster computer platform was designed, based on many-core CPU microprocessors: Tile64. MC64-Cluster architecture was outlined in terms of both hardware and software, including commands available to manage jobs and provided application programming interfaces to communicate and synchronize tiles, making this system easy to use. Massively, concurrent-searches of keys in B-trees, which are used in many applications, including bioinformatics, were used. Remarkable performance improvements were obtained when the cluster resources were combined with those available in host machine (hybrid or heterogeneous environments). These results were even more outstanding when analyzed in terms of performance-per-watt, highlighting their green-computing advantages. Together with the cluster architecture, they represent the main contributions of this work. To our knowledge, this is the first cluster implementation of this kind being developed

Synergy effects in heavy metal Ion chelation with aryl- and aroyl-substituted thiourea derivatives

Detection and removal of metal ion contaminants have attracted great interest due to the health risks that they represent for humans and wildlife. Among the proposed compounds developed for these purposes, thiourea derivatives have been shown as quite efficient chelating agents of metal cations and have been proposed for heavy metal ion removal and for components of high-selectivity sensors. Understanding the nature of metal-ionophore activity for these compounds is thus of high relevance. We present a theoretical study on the interaction between substituted thioureas and metal cations, namely, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+. Two substituent groups have been chosen: 2-furoyl and m-trifluoromethylphenyl. Combining density functional theory simulations with wave function analysis techniques, we study the nature of the metal-thiourea interaction and characterize the bonding properties. Here, it is shown how the N,N′-disubstituted derivative has a strong affinity for Hg2+, through cation-hydrogen interactions, due to its greater oxidizing capacityR.B. acknowledges Fundación Carolina, Spain, for a Ph.D. fellowship. MC64-ClustalWP2: A Highly-Parallel Hybrid Strategy to Align Multiple Sequences in Many-Core Architectures

    Get PDF
We have developed the MC64-ClustalWP2 as a new implementation of the Clustal W algorithm, integrating a novel parallelization strategy and significantly increasing the performance when aligning long sequences in architectures with many cores. It must be stressed that in such a process, the detailed analysis of both the software and hardware features and peculiarities is of paramount importance to reveal key points to exploit and optimize the full potential of parallelism in many-core CPU systems. The new parallelization approach has focused into the most time-consuming stages of this algorithm. In particular, the so-called progressive alignment has drastically improved the performance, due to a fine-grained approach where the forward and backward loops were unrolled and parallelized. Another key approach has been the implementation of the new algorithm in a hybrid-computing system, integrating both an Intel Xeon multi-core CPU and a Tilera Tile64 many-core card. A comparison with other Clustal W implementations reveals the high-performance of the new algorithm and strategy in many-core CPU architectures, in a scenario where the sequences to align are relatively long (more than 10 kb) and, hence, a many-core GPU hardware cannot be used. Thus, the MC64-ClustalWP2 runs multiple alignments more than 18x than the original Clustal W algorithm, and more than 7x than the best x86 parallel implementation to date, being publicly available through a web service. Besides, these developments have been deployed in cost-effective personal computers and should be useful for life-science researchers, including the identification of identities and differences for mutation/polymorphism analyses, biodiversity and evolutionary studies and for the development of molecular markers for paternity testing, germplasm management and protection, to assist breeding, illegal traffic control, fraud prevention and for the protection of the intellectual property (identification/traceability), including the protected designation of origin, among other applications

This research article will talk about the symptom of stress currently experienced by higher education students. Stress is nowadays an issue present in the lives of higher education students (however, academic stress has not received the sufficient attention it needs or deserves). Stress is the way in which the human body reacts to stressful or tiring situations that cause psychopathic reactions or psychological disorders of varying severity. Therefore, it is intended to expose or propose a viable and functional solution for the management of stress control. To this end, we have taken the initiative to analyze an estimated university group of 26 students in order to identify the variables or characteristics that they have and, based on this, to design a tool to reduce anti-stress that also complies with the profile of a university student. As students of the Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Huauchinango, currently in their fifth semester, we will design a project with a tool that can help combat or control the symptom of stress. Its mission or main objective is to help or control the stress of students and enhance or improve their academic performance, in addition to improving their skills and mental state.
