Mousetrapping: the ordeals of interpretation
Tese de doutoramento, Estudos Literários (Teoria da Literatura), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Letras, 2012The assumption that interpretation is widespread and must be tamed is illustrated in the ambition for a touchstone capable of showing the authenticity, or veracity, of certain entities. Such touchstone would have the capacity to help us distinguish friends from enemies, of identifying the quality of particular lines, and of bringing the truth to light. This touchstone, used for the comprehension of others, may be an object, a form of test, or a person. It will, however, be seen that accurate judgments do not derive from the use of the touchstone itself, but from a technical understanding of interpretation conducted by accomplished individuals. Precise forms of judgment are, thus, the result of a combination of factors that include good intuition, or conviction, the ability to learn a specific method or technique, to show something, detect errors and ask questions.
Traditional beliefs and access to modern medicine: demand for maternal and child health care in rural Guinea Bissau
This Work Projectwasborn and builtinthecontextoftheBelief Systems and Health Behaviors in Guinea-Bissau project. This dissertation explores the relationship between access to healthcare and traditional beliefs as drivers of modern medical care demand. Access to health facilities is a widespread barrier to the adoption of preventive and treatment health measures. In addition, traditional beliefs and consequent cultural behaviors are also a barrier to medical care seeking behavior. This thesis explores how the magnitude of believing in traditional theories evolves has the distance to the nearest health facility increases
Transition from endemic behavior to eradication of malaria due to combined drug therapies: an agent-model approach
We introduce an agent-based model describing a
susceptible-infectious-susceptible (SIS) system of humans and mosquitoes to
predict malaria epidemiological scenarios in realistic biological conditions.
Emphasis is given to the transition from endemic behavior to eradication of
malaria transmission induced by combined drug therapies acting on both the
gametocytemia reduction and on the selective mosquito mortality during parasite
development in the mosquito. Our mathematical framework enables to uncover the
critical values of the parameters characterizing the effect of each drug
therapy. Moreover, our results provide quantitative evidence of what is
empirically known: interventions combining gametocytemia reduction through the
use of gametocidal drugs, with the selective action of ivermectin during
parasite development in the mosquito, may actively promote disease eradication
in the long run. In the agent model, the main properties of human-mosquito
interactions are implemented as parameters and the model is validated by
comparing simulations with real data of malaria incidence collected in the
endemic malaria region of Chimoio in Mozambique. Finally, we discuss our
findings in light of current drug administration strategies for malaria
prevention, that may interfere with human-to-mosquito transmission process.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Genome architecture: from linear organisation of chromatin to the 3D assembly in the nucleus
The genetic information is stored in the eukaryotic nucleus in the form of chromatin. This is a macromolecular entity that includes genomic DNA and histone proteins that form nucleosomes, plus a large variety of chromatin-associated non-histone proteins. Chromatin is structurally and functionally organised at various levels. One reveals the linear topography of DNA, histones and their post-translational modifications and non-histone proteins along each chromosome. This level provides regulatory information about the association of genomic elements with particular signatures that have been used to define chromatin states. Importantly, these chromatin states correlate with structural and functional genomic features. Another regulatory layer is established at the level of the 3D organisation of chromatin within the nucleus, which has been revealed clearly as non-random. Instead, a variety of intra- and inter-chromosomal genomic domains with specific epigenetic and functional properties has been identified. In this review, we discuss how the recent advances in genomic approaches have contributed to our understanding of these two levels of genome architecture. We have emphasised our analysis with the aim of integrating information available for yeast, Arabidopsis, Drosophila, and mammalian cells. We consider that this comparative study helps define common and unique features in each system, providing a basis to better understand the complexity of genome organisation.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (grant BFU2012–34821) and an institutional grant of Fundación Ramón Areces to the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa.Peer Reviewe
One of the central ideas of this thesis is that there are sentences, such as «I am x», that cannot have a contractual value, because their meaning depends on the definition of the different groups which try to explain them. For example, if we change this sentence into «I am a twenty five year old man named John» we understand that such a statement looks like a simple fact and not like the beginning of various interpretation problems. Nevertheless, when we exchange «x» for a word like «woman» the question is no longer simple, and the images of an elegant middle aged lady, a challenging-looking English suffragette, a she robot indistinguishable from any other human being, or a pair of women in love walking through a park, will come to mind. To each of these characters correspond different versions of what for most people is supposed to be a woman, or a group of women and, if some of these definitions are of what most people think a woman should be, other belong only to minority groups. In this thesis we try and propose to describe a language problem, related to the way different people attempt to explain the same sentence. In the first and second chapters two different minority descriptions are discussed by the authors Donna Haraway and Judith Butler, in order to try to understand how they view the sentence «I am x». The way in which such a statement is inseparable from the expression «You make me x» will be the object of analysis in the third chapter, which concludes the thesis.Fundação M. Sampaio, F. A model for assessing the quantitative effects of heterogeneous affinity in malaria transmission along with Ivermectin mass administration
Using an agent-based model of malaria, we present numerical evidence that in communities of individuals having an affinity varying within a broad range of values, disease transmission may increase up to 300%. Moreover, our findings provide new insight into how to combine different strategies for the prevention of malaria transmission. In particular, we uncover a relationship between the level of heterogeneity and the level of conventional and unconventional anti-malarial drug administration (ivermectin and gametocidal agents), which, when taken together, will define a control parameter, tuning between disease persistence and elimination. Finally, we also provide evidence that the entomological inoculation rate, as well as the product between parasite and sporozoite rates are both good indicators of malaria incidence in the presence of heterogeneity in disease transmission and may configure a possible improvement in that setting, upon classical standard measures such as the basic reproductive number.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A promising future would be reserved for Mértola through the local development project
outlined by Serrão Martins, 1st mayor of the post-25th of April era, combined with the
mastery of scientific work developed by Professor Cláudio Torres aiming the protection,
valorization and disclosure of the cultural and natural heritage of the county.
Mértola patrimonial was born, therefore, with Serrão Martins and Cláudio Torres, but grew
with all who joined them in the same way. These archaeologists, historians, geographers
and technicians of various metiers who have spent seasons helping uncovering or
preserving treasures and others who settled down and started a new stage of life making
«Mértola Vila Museum» of Portugal.
The Mértola «project» traced its master line and evolved from 1978, mainly through the
action of CAM, Mértola Archaeological Field – directed by Claudio Torres – but also with
different entities like the Municipal Council, logically, ADPM, ALSUD, FSM, citing the
most important of the local ones.
Considering the level of what has already been written, we’ll not dwell on deep
descriptions about the project «Mértola vila Museum».We will present a summary of
CAM's scientific work, rehearsing a critical analysis of the past and present with a view to
understanding the future development path.
The core of our study rests in the legal mechanisms’ analysis that, in the current - national,
community and international - legislative framework, allow institutions and individuals to
materialize projects which, centering on heritage, lead to endogenous and sustainable
development of localities.
We will end in a way of reflection on the future path, one that can consistently earn and
perpetuate wealth in favor of the municipality of Mértola and its people
