Fast Key-Value Lookups with Node Tracker

Lookup operations for in-memory databases are heavily memory bound, because they often rely on pointer-chasing linked data structure traversals. They also have many branches that are hard-to-predict due to random key lookups. In this study, we show that although cache misses are the primary bottleneck for these applications, without a method for eliminating the branch mispredictions only a small fraction of the performance benefit is achieved through prefetching alone. We propose the Node Tracker (NT), a novel programmable prefetcher/pre-execution unit that is highly effective in exploiting inter key-lookup parallelism to improve single-thread performance. We extend NT with branch outcome streaming (BOS) to reduce branch mispredictions and show that this achieves an extra 3× speedup. Finally, we evaluate the NT as a pre-execution unit and demonstrate that we can further improve the performance in both single- and multi-threaded execution modes. Our results show that, on average, NT improves single-thread performance by 4.1× when used as a prefetcher; 11.9× as a prefetcher with BOS; 14.9× as a pre-execution unit and 18.8× as a pre-execution unit with BOS. Finally, with 24 cores of the latter version, we achieve a speedup of 203× and 11× over the single-core and 24-core baselines, respectively

State violence and human rights: the European human rights court cases submitted against Turkey on detention

Turkey gave its citizens the right to individual petition to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in 1987. In the same year, via legislative decree, State of Emergency Rule which excluded the acts of the administration or responsibility of public servants in the field of emergency issues from judicial review was declared in seven provinces located in the Kurdish region. At the juncture of these two critical shifts that envisaged significant changes in the legal status of millions of people, the human rights violations committed predominantly against Kurds during the state of emergency period were carried to the ECtHR in the absence of an effective and accessible domestic judicial mechanism. In the years that followed, the ECtHR was bombarded with thousands of individual applications from southeast Turkey, whereby the narratives of violence taking place in the 1990s were for the first time heard in a public forum. Yet, despite the thousands of the judgments of the Court finding Turkey guilty of breaching the Convention requirements, the effect of these judgments remained limited at the domestic level as a result of the development of the official narrative of security and counter-terrorism alongside the human rights narratives and reforms. What I propose to do in this thesis is to delve into the dynamics of this dual development of seemingly contradictory narratives – whereby rights given by one hand were taken away by the other – by looking at the cases on alleged incidents of state killings or deaths in detention, submitted to the ECtHR against Turkey prior to May 2009. By looking at the ways of attribution of responsibility to the state and the transformation of the scopes of the cases by the Court in these proceedings, I try to understand the limitations of human rights law in denouncing state violence through locating the silences, exceptions and exclusions in the Court's reasoning

Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine the presence of deep infiltrative endometriosis (DIE) in the surgical management of endometriosis. Material and methods: Operation notes and histopathological reports of women with endometriosis were retrospectively analyzed in the Ege University Hospital between 2008 and 2018. A total of 191 women with suspicious of endometriosis but without clinical signs of DIE were enrolled in the study. Laparoscopic diagnosis of DIE was compared with histopathological reports. There was no histopathology before surgery. Endometriosis was suspected only based on symptoms. Results: A total of 213 lesions that were thought to be DIE were removed from 191 women with endometriosis. Among these 213 lesions, 179 specimens were reported as endometriosis and 34 lesions as fibro-adipose tissue. Forty-nine right uterosacral ligaments were excised, and endometriosis was detected in 44 out of 49 specimens. Histopathological examination of 45 left uterosacral ligaments revealed endometriosis in 35 specimens. Finally, 25 endometriotic nodules were removed from the recto-vaginal space, and 22 of these were verified as endometriosis by a pathologist. The positive predictive value of laparoscopic visualization for DIE in the group suspected of endometriosis but without any clinical findings of DIE was 84%. Conclusions: Women with the suspicious of endometriosis, qualified to surgery, because of infertility or pain, should be prudently investigated to confirm or to exclude coexistence of DIE even if no preoperative sign of DIE was observed to provide complete resection. Otherwise, DIE continues to grow, causes pain postoperatively, and complicates subsequent surgery

The objective of this study was to use automated activity, lying, and rumination monitors to characterize prepartum behavior and predict calving in dairy cattle. Data were collected from 20 primiparous and 33 multiparous Holstein dairy cattle from September 2011 to May 2013 at the University of Kentucky Coldstream Dairy. The HR Tag (SCR Engineers Ltd., Netanya, Israel) automatically collected neck activity and rumination data in 2-h increments. The IceQube (IceRobotics Ltd., South Queensferry, United Kingdom) automatically collected number of steps, lying time, standing time, number of transitions from standing to lying (ly-. ing bouts), and total motion, summed in 15-min increments. IceQube data were summed in 2-h increments to match HR Tag data. All behavioral data were collected for 14 d before the predicted calving date. Retrospective data analysis was performed using mixed linear models to examine behavioral changes by day in the 14 d before calving. Bihourly behavioral differences from baseline values over the 14 d before calving were also evaluated using mixed linear models. Changes in daily rumination time, total motion, lying time, and lying bouts occurred in the 14 d before calving. In the bihourly analysis, extreme values for all behaviors occurred in the final 24 h, indicating that the monitored behaviors may be useful in calving prediction. To determine whether technologies were useful at predicting calving, random forest, linear discriminant analysis, and neural network machine -learning techniques were constructed and implemented using R version 3.1.0 (R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria). These methods were used on variables from each technology and all combined variables from both technologies. A neural network analysis that combined variables from both technologies at the daily level yielded 100.0% sen-sitivity and 86.8% specificity. A neural network analysis that combined variables from both technologies in bihourly increments was used to identify 2-h periods in the 8 h before calving with 82.8% sensitivity and 80.4% specificity. Changes in behavior and machine-learning alerts indicate that commercially marketed behavioral monitors may have calving prediction potential

OBJECTIVES: As the world population ages, psychiatrists will increasingly need instruments for measuring constructs of psychopathology that are generalizable to diverse elders. The study tested whether syndromes of co-occurring problems derived from self-ratings of psychopathology by US elders would fit self-ratings by elders in 19 other societies. METHODS/DESIGN: The Older Adult Self-Report (OASR) was completed by 12,826 60- to 102-year-olds in 19 societies from North and South America, Asia, and Eastern, Northern, Southern, and Western Europe, plus the US. Individual and multi-group confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) tested the fit of the 7-syndrome OASR model, consisting of the Anxious/Depressed, Worries, Somatic Complaints, Functional Impairment, Memory/Cognition Problems, Thought Problems, and Irritable/Disinhibited syndromes. RESULTS: In individual CFAs, the primary model fit index showed good fit for all societies, while the secondary model fit indices showed acceptable to good fit. The items loaded strongly on their respective factors, with a median item loading of .63 across the 20 societies; and 98.7% of the loadings were statistically significant. In multi-group CFAs, 98% of items demonstrated approximate or full metric invariance. Fifteen percent of items demonstrated approximate or full scalar invariance and another 59% demonstrated scalar invariance across more than half of societies. CONCLUSIONS: The findings supported the generalizability of OASR syndromes across societies. The seven syndromes offer empirically-based clinical constructs that are relevant for elders of different backgrounds. They can be used to assess diverse elders, and as a taxonomic framework to facilitate communication, services, research and training in geriatric psychiatry. This article is protected by copyright.
