A Study of Activated Processes in Soft Sphere Glass
On the basis of long simulations of a binary mixture of soft spheres just
below the glass transition, we make an exploratory study of the activated
processes that contribute to the dynamics. We concentrate on statistical

A Field Range Bound for General Single-Field Inflation
We explore the consequences of a detection of primordial tensor fluctuations
for general single-field models of inflation. Using the effective theory of
inflation, we propose a generalization of the Lyth bound. Our bound applies to
all single-field models with two-derivative kinetic terms for the scalar
fluctuations and is always stronger than the corresponding bound for slow-roll
models. This shows that non-trivial dynamics can't evade the Lyth bound. We
also present a weaker, but completely universal bound that holds whenever the
Null Energy Condition (NEC) is satisfied at horizon crossing.Comment: 16 page
Measurement of Ultrafine Particles and Other Air Pollutants Emitted by Cooking Activities
Cooking emissions show a strong dependence on cooking styles and parameters. Measurements of the average ultrafine particle (UFP) concentration, PM2.5 and black carbon concentrations emitted by cooking activities ranged from 1.34 Ă— 104 to 6.04 Ă— 105 particles/cm3, 10.0 to 230.9 ÎĽg/m3 and 0.1 to 0.8 ÎĽg/m3, respectively. Lower UFP concentrations were observed during boiling, while higher levels were emitted during frying. The highest UFP concentrations were observed when using a gas stove at high temperature with the kitchen exhaust fan turned off. The observed UFP profiles were similar in the kitchen and in another room, with a lag of approximately 10 min

We have systematically estimated the possible temperatures obtained from an
analysis of recent data on distributions observed at RHIC experiments.
Using the fact that observed distributions cannot be described by the
original Hagedorn formula in the whole range of transverse momenta (in
particular above 6 GeV/c), we propose a modified Hagedorn formula including
temperature fluctuation. We show that by using it we can fit
distributions in the whole range and can estimate consistently the relevant

Lawson Criterion for Ignition Exceeded in an Inertial Fusion Experiment
For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin burn propagation into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While scientific breakeven (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion
MHCII-mediated dialog between group 2 innate lymphoid cells and CD4+ T cells potentiates type 2 immunity and promotes parasitic helminth expulsion
Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) release interleukin-13 (IL-13) during protective immunity to helminth infection and detrimentally during allergy and asthma. Using two mouse models to deplete ILC2s in vivo, we demonstrate that T helper 2 (Th2) cell responses are impaired in the absence of ILC2s. We show that MHCII-expressing ILC2s interact with antigen-specific T cells to instigate a dialog in which IL-2 production from T cells promotes ILC2 proliferation and IL-13 production. Deletion of MHCII renders IL-13-expressing ILC2s incapable of efficiently inducing Nippostrongylus brasiliensis expulsion. Thus, during transition to adaptive T cell-mediated immunity, the ILC2 and T cell crosstalk contributes to their mutual maintenance, expansion and cytokine production. This interaction appears to augment dendritic-cell-induced T cell activation and identifies a previously unappreciated pathway in the regulation of type-2 immunity
Racetrack Inflation
We develop a model of eternal topological inflation using a racetrack
potential within the context of type IIB string theory with KKLT volume
stabilization. The inflaton field is the imaginary part of the K\"ahler
structure modulus, which is an axion-like field in the 4D effective field
theory. This model does not require moving branes, and in this sense it is
simpler than other models of string theory inflation. Contrary to
single-exponential models, the structure of the potential in this example
allows for the existence of saddle points between two degenerate local minima
for which the slow-roll conditions can be satisfied in a particular range of
parameter space. We conjecture that this type of inflation should be present in
more general realizations of the modular landscape. We also consider
`irrational' models having a dense set of minima, and discuss their possible

Estimating the Cost of Executive Stock Options: Evidence from Switzerland
It is often argued that Black-Scholes (1973) values overstate the subjective NEWLINE value of stock options granted to risk-averse and under-diversified executives. NEWLINE We construct a “representative” Swiss executive and extend the certainty- NEWLINE equivalence approach presented by Hall and Murphy (2002) to assess NEWLINE the value-cost wedge of executive stock options. Even with low coefficients NEWLINE of relative risk aversion, the discount can be above 50% compared to the NEWLINE Black-Scholes values. Regression analysis reveals that the equilibrium level NEWLINE of executive compensation is explained by economic determinant variables NEWLINE such as firm size and growth opportunities, whereas the managers’ pay-forperformance NEWLINE sensitivity remains largely unexplained. Firms with larger NEWLINE boards of directors pay higher wages, indicating potentially unresolved NEWLINE agency conflicts. We reject the hypothesis that cross-sectional differences in NEWLINE the amount of executive pay vanish when risk-adjusted values are used as NEWLINE the dependent variable
