    Strong coupling of Bloch surface waves and excitons in ZnO up to 430 K

    We report on the investigation and observation of Bloch surface wave polaritons, resulting from the interaction between excitons in ZnO and a Bloch surface wave supported by a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR), for temperatures up to 430 K. The samples were fabricated using pulsed laser deposition and consist of a DBR made of 6.5 layer pairs of yttrica-stabilized zirconia and Al2O3 with a ZnO surface layer. We measured the reflectivity of transverse electric modes using a SiO2 prism in Kretschmann–Raether configuration, giving access to high in-plane momenta. Whereas the lower polariton branch was clearly observable, the upper polariton branch was not visible, due to the strong absorption in ZnO above the excitonic resonance. By employing a coupled oscillator model for the interaction between the bare surface mode and exciton, we derived a corresponding Rabi splitting between 100–192 meV at 294 K, which decreases with increasing temperature

    Pupillometry examinations of the human eye with the eye diagnostic device PEP-2000 - first results

    Pupillometry forms the diagnostic basis for numerous pathologies of the eye. For this reason, fast and accurate diagnostics in the field of ophthalmology are essential. Two examination techniques, full-field ERG and pupillometry were combined in a diagnostic device developed by ICM e.V. to reduce the examination process for both examiners and patients. In this paper, the device is examined for the quality of the pupillometry measurements. A study with 12 healthy subjects (3 f, 9 m, 36.33 ± 11.94 years) was conducted to evaluate the device. The results showed that the minimal pupil diameter is 40 % higher than the literature values. The main reason for the differences is the low light intensity of 15 cd/m2. However, the maximum pupil diameter is within the range of the researched values. The results of the pupillary reaction measurements show that the values obtained (amplitude, contraction time and peak time) are within the range of literature values. The latency time of 690 ms is 40 % too high. The reason for this could be the moderate pupil detection rate of 50-70 %. Nevertheless, plausible and comparable analysis values could be obtained with the eye diagnostic device PEP-2000. Further work will look at improving pupil detection rates

    Full-field electroretinography (full-field ERG) forms the diagnostic basis for numerous pathologies of the eye. For this reason, fast and accurate diagnostics in the field of ophthalmology are essential. Two examination techniques, full-field ERG and pupillometry were combined in a diagnostic device developed by ICM e.V. to reduce the examination process for both examiners and patients. In this paper, the device is examined for the quality of the full-field ERG measurements. A feasibility study with 12 healthy subjects (3 f, 9 m, 36.33 ± 11.94 years) was conducted to evaluate the device. The results showed that the peak times for both light- and dark-adapted measurements were within the range of the researched literature values. However, the amplitudes were markedly lower in both measurements compared to the averaged literature values (dark-adapted about 8.5-fold and light-adapted about 5.5-fold) and are clearly outside the range of values researched. The main reason for this is the use of cup electrodes, which were placed on the skin of the lower eyelid. Nevertheless, plausible and comparable analysis values could be obtained with the eye diagnostic device PEP-2000. Further studies with wire electrodes will be performed

Most will watch or listen. Many will transmit. Some will get in the way of others. And a few will blast it with all they can - for the best of science. We intend to start the discussion to include the public in the unique observation of Apophis, in particular focusing on the radio amateur community and the need for world-wide coordination to avoid mutual interference

    Kinematically complete experimental study of Compton scattering at helium atoms near the ionization threshold

    Compton scattering is one of the fundamental interaction processes of light with matter. Already upon its discovery [1] it was described as a billiard-type collision of a photon kicking a quasi-free electron. With decreasing photon energy, the maximum possible momentum transfer becomes so small that the corresponding energy falls below the binding energy of the electron. Then ionization by Compton scattering becomes an intriguing quantum phenomenon. Here we report a kinematically complete experiment on Compton scattering at helium atoms below that threshold. We determine the momentum correlations of the electron, the recoiling ion, and the scattered photon in a coincidence experiment finding that electrons are not only emitted in the direction of the momentum transfer, but that there is a second peak of ejection to the backward direction. This finding links Compton scattering to processes as ionization by ultrashort optical pulses [2], electron impact ionization [3,4], ion impact ionization [5,6], and neutron scattering [7] where similar momentum patterns occur.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Angular dependence of the Wigner time delay upon tunnel ionization of H2H_{2}

    More than 100 years after its discovery and its explanation in the energy domain, the duration of the photoelectric effect is still heavily studied. The emission time of a photoelectron can be quantified by the Wigner time delay. Experiments addressing this time delay for single-photon ionization became feasible during the last 10 years. A missing piece, which has not been studied, so far, is the Wigner time delay for strong-field ionization of molecules. Here we show experimental data on the Wigner time delay for tunnel ionization of H2H_{2} molecules and demonstrate its dependence on the emission direction of the electron with respect to the molecular axis. We find, that the observed changes in the Wigner time delay can be quantitatively explained by elongated/shortened travel paths of the electrons that are due to spatial shifts of the electron's birth position after tunneling. This introduces an intuitive perspective towards the Wigner time delay in strong-field ionization.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

    On Josephson effects in insulating spin systems

    We discuss an experiment in which two magnetic insulators that both show a field-induced magnetic-ordering transition are weakly coupled to one another and are placed into an ex- ternal magnetic field. If the respective magnetic states can be interpreted as phase coherent Bose-Einstein condensates of magnetic bosonic quasiparticles, one expects the occurrence of Josephson effects. For two identical systems, the resulting d.c. Josephson effect formally represents a constant quasiparticle Josephson current across the weak link, which turns out to be unobservable in an experiment. For magnetic insulators with different critical fields, a spontaneous alternating quasiparticle current develops with a leading oscillation frequency {\omega}a.c. that is determined by the difference between the critical fields. As a result of the coupling, additional sidebands appear in the energy spectrum of the coupled device that would be absent without phase coherence. We discuss the primary conditions for such an effect to take place and conclude that its detection can be feasible for a proper choice of compounds with suitable and realistic material parameters.Comment: This version has been adapted to Elsevier style. The interpretation of the d.c. Josephson effect is more explicit. The role of the phase of the triplon-BEC-wavefunction is precisely defined to address a possible ambiguity with respect to the in-plane angle of the transverse magnetic moments.     Applying the Optimized CO Rebreathing Method for Measuring Blood Volumes and Hemoglobin Mass in Heart Failure Patients

    Introduction: Determination of blood volume, red cell volume, and plasma volume contributes to the understanding of the pathophysiology in heart failure, especially concerning anemia and volume load. The optimized carbon monoxide (CO)-rebreathing method (oCORM) is used to determine these parameters and hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) in exercise physiology. The applicability of oCORM to determine the intravascular volumes and Hbmass in heart failure patients is currently undetermined because assumptions concerning CO kinetics with oCORM rely on healthy subjects with a normal ejection fraction. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to determine the applicability and the systematic error of oCORM arising from a reduced EF when oCORM is used for measurement of intravascular volumes and Hbmass in heart failure patients.Methods: oCORM was performed in 21 patients with heart failure and a reduced ejection fraction (EF) of < 30% (EFsev) and 25 controls (CONT). CO kinetics in capillary blood was studied 3–15 min after commencement of CO rebreathing. Differences in CO kinetics between the groups were assessed using a generalized linear model. The systematic error for determination of Hbmass with oCORM arising from differences in CO kinetics was assessed using the Monte Carlo method.Results: The CO kinetics was significantly different between EFsev and CONT. In both groups, exposure to CO led to a COHb increase to 6.0 ± 1.0% 3 min after CO rebreathing. There were no CO related side effects or any clinical symptoms. Monte Carlo simulation quantifies the systematic error for determination of Hbmass arising from an impaired ejection fraction to be −0.88%.Conclusion: Our results indicate an impaired vascular mixing of CO when EF is severely reduced. When Hbmass is determined using the original oCORM protocol in heart failure patients with a reduced EF, the systematic underestimation of about 1% should be considered. However, the error arising from this impaired vascular mixing appears small and clinically negligible. Furthermore, application of oCORM was safe and not related to any side effects resulting from CO exposure. In conclusion, oCORM can be used for assessing intravascular volumes and Hbmass in patients with a reduced EF

    MicroRNA-132/212 family enhances arteriogenesis after hindlimb ischaemia through modulation of the Ras-MAPK pathway

    Arteriogenesis is a complicated process induced by increased local shear-and radial wall-stress, leading to an increase in arterial diameter. This process is enhanced by growth factors secreted by both inflammatory and endothelial cells in response to physical stress. Although therapeutic promotion of arteriogenesis is of great interest for ischaemic diseases, little is known about the modulation of the signalling cascades via microRNAs. We observed that miR-132/212 expression was significantly upregulated after occlusion of the femoral artery. miR-132/212 knockout (KO) mice display a slower perfusion recovery after hind-limb ischaemia compared to wildtype (WT) mice. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrates a clear trend towards smaller collateral arteries in KO mice. Although Ex vivo aortic ring assays score similar number of branches in miR-132/212 KO mice compared to WT, it can be stimulated with exogenous miR-132, a dominant member of the miR-132/212 family. Moreover, in in vitro pericyte-endothelial co-culture cell assays, overexpression of miR-132 and mir-212 in endothelial cells results in enhanced vascularization, as shown by an increase in tubular structures and junctions. Our results suggested that miR-132/212 may exert their effects by enhancing the Ras-Mitogen-activated protein kinases MAPK signalling pathway through direct inhibition of Rasa1, and Spred1. The miR-132/212 cluster promotes arteriogenesis by modulating Ras-MAPK signalling via direct targeting of its inhibitors Rasa1 and Spred1

    German evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of Psoriasis vulgaris (short version)

    Psoriasis vulgaris is a common and chronic inflammatory skin disease which has the potential to significantly reduce the quality of life in severely affected patients. The incidence of psoriasis in Western industrialized countries ranges from 1.5 to 2%. Despite the large variety of treatment options available, patient surveys have revealed insufficient satisfaction with the efficacy of available treatments and a high rate of medication non-compliance. To optimize the treatment of psoriasis in Germany, the Deutsche Dermatologische Gesellschaft and the Berufsverband Deutscher Dermatologen (BVDD) have initiated a project to develop evidence-based guidelines for the management of psoriasis. The guidelines focus on induction therapy in cases of mild, moderate, and severe plaque-type psoriasis in adults. The short version of the guidelines reported here consist of a series of therapeutic recommendations that are based on a systematic literature search and subsequent discussion with experts in the field; they have been approved by a team of dermatology experts. In addition to the therapeutic recommendations provided in this short version, the full version of the guidelines includes information on contraindications, adverse events, drug interactions, practicality, and costs as well as detailed information on how best to apply the treatments described (for full version, please see Nast et al., JDDG, Suppl 2:S1–S126, 2006; or http://www.psoriasis-leitlinie.de)
