Provinciality and the Art World: The Midland Group 1961- 1977
This paper takes as its focus the Midland Group Gallery in order to first, make a case for the consideration of the geographies of art galleries. Second, highlight the importance of galleries in the context of cultural geographies of the sixties. Third, discuss the role of provinciality in the operation of art worlds. In so doing it explicates one set of geographies surrounding the gallery
– those of the local, regional and international networks that connected to produce art works and art space. It reveals how the interactions between places and practices outside of metropolitan and regional hierarchies provides a more nuanced insight into how art worlds operated during the
sixties, a period of growing internationalism of art, and how contested definitions of the provincial played an integral role in this. The paper charts the operations of the Midland Group Gallery and the spaces that it occupied to demonstrate how it was representative of a post-war
discourse of provincialism and a corresponding re-evaluation of regional cultural activity
A novel data solution to inform curriculum decolonisation: the case of the Imperial College London Masters of Public Health
There is increasing interest within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to examine curricula for legacies of colonialism or empire that might result in a preponderance of references to research from the global north. Prior attempts to study reading lists for author geographies have employed resource-intensive audit and data collection methods based on manual searching and tagging individual reading list items by characteristics such as author country or place of publication. However, these manual methods are impractical for large reading lists with hundreds of citations that change over instances the course is taught. Laborious manual methods may explain why there is a lack of quantitative evidence to inform this debate and the understanding of geographic distribution of curricula. We describe a novel computational method applied to 568 articles, representing 3166 authors from the Imperial College London Masters in Public Health programme over two time periods (2017–18 and 2019–20). Described with summary statistics, we found a marginal shift away from global north-affiliated authors on the reading lists of one Masters course over two time periods and contextualise the role and limitations of the use of quantitative data in the decolonisation discourse. The method provides opportunities for educators to examine the distribution of course readings at pace and over time, serving as a useful point of departure to engage in decolonisation debates
Computer-aided whole-cell design:taking a holistic approach by integrating synthetic with systems biology
Computer-aided design for synthetic biology promises to accelerate the
rational and robust engineering of biological systems; it requires both
detailed and quantitative mathematical and experimental models of the processes
to (re)design, and software and tools for genetic engineering and DNA assembly.
Ultimately, the increased precision in the design phase will have a dramatic
impact on the production of designer cells and organisms with bespoke functions
and increased modularity. Computer-aided design strategies require quantitative
representations of cells, able to capture multiscale processes and link
genotypes to phenotypes. Here, we present a perspective on how whole-cell,
multiscale models could transform design-build-test-learn cycles in synthetic
biology. We show how these models could significantly aid in the design and
learn phases while reducing experimental testing by presenting case studies
spanning from genome minimization to cell-free systems, and we discuss several
challenges for the realization of our vision. The possibility to describe and
build in silico whole-cells offers an opportunity to develop increasingly
automatized, precise and accessible computer-aided design tools and strategies
throughout novel interdisciplinary collaborations
Perceptions of 'coming out' among British Muslim gay men
The cultural processes of heteronormativity and compulsory heterosexuality are acutely active within Islamic societies. The present study explored perceptions of 'coming out' among a group of British Muslim gay men (BMGM), focussing upon the potential consequences for identity processes and psychological well-being. Ten BMGM of Pakistani descent were interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule. Interview transcripts were subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis and informed by identity process theory. Four superordinate themes are reported, including (1) 'social representational constraints upon "coming out"'; (2) ' "coming out": a source of shame and a threat to distinctiveness'; (3) 'fear of physical violence from ingroup members'; and (4) 'foreseeing the future: "coming out" as a coping strategy'. Data suggest that BMGM face a bi-dimensional homophobia from ethno-religious ingroup members and the general population, which can render the prospect of 'coming out' threatening for identity. Theoretical and practical implications of this research are discussed

Heterogeneous mass distribution of the rubble-pile asteroid (101955) Bennu
The gravity field of a small body provides insight into its internal mass distribution. We used two approaches to measure the gravity field of the rubble-pile asteroid (101955) Bennu: (i) tracking and modeling the spacecraft in orbit about the asteroid and (ii) tracking and modeling pebble-sized particles naturally ejected from Bennu’s surface into sustained orbits. These approaches yield statistically consistent results up to degree and order 3, with the particle-based field being statistically significant up to degree and order 9. Comparisons with a constant-density shape model show that Bennu has a heterogeneous mass distribution. These deviations can be modeled with lower densities at Bennu’s equatorial bulge and center. The lower-density equator is consistent with recent migration and redistribution of material. The lower-density center is consistent with a past period of rapid rotation, either from a previous Yarkovsky-O’Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack cycle or arising during Bennu’s accretion following the disruption of its parent body
Estimates of Methane Release From Gas Seeps at the Southern Hikurangi Margin, New Zealand
The highest concentration of cold seep sites worldwide has been observed along convergent margins, where fluid migration through sedimentary sequences is enhanced by tectonic deformation and dewatering of marine sediments. In these regions, gas seeps support thriving chemosynthetic ecosystems increasing productivity and biodiversity along the margin. In this paper, we combine seismic reflection, multibeam and split-beam hydroacoustic data to identify, map and characterize five known sites of active gas seepage. The study area, on the southern Hikurangi Margin off the North Island of Aotearoa/New Zealand, is a well-established gas hydrate province and has widespread evidence for methane seepage. The combination of seismic and hydroacoustic data enable us to investigate the geological structures underlying the seep sites, the origin of the gas in the subsurface and the associated distribution of gas flares emanating from the seabed. Using multi-frequency split-beam echosounder (EK60) data we constrain the volume of gas released at the targeted seep sites that lie between 1,110 and 2,060 m deep. We estimate the total deep-water seeps in the study area emission between 8.66 and 27.21 × 10 6 kg of methane gas per year. Moreover, we extrpolate methane fluxes for the whole Hikurangi Margin based on an existing gas seep database, that range between 2.77 × 10 8 and 9.32 × 10 8 kg of methane released each year. These estimates can result in a potential decrease of regional pH of 0.015–0.166 relative to the background value of 7.962. This study provides the most quantitative assessment to date of total methane release on the Hikurangi Margin. The results have implications for understanding what drives variation in seafloor biological communities and ocean biogeochemistry in subduction margin cold seep sites
The Expression of VEGF-A Is Down Regulated in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells of Patients with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis
BACKGROUND: Most patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) eventually enter a secondary progressive (SPMS) phase, characterized by increasing neurological disability. The mechanisms underlying transition to SPMS are unknown and effective treatments and biomarkers are lacking. Vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) is an angiogenic factor with neuroprotective effects that has been associated with neurodegenerative diseases. SPMS has a prominent neurodegenerative facet and we investigated a possible role for VEGF-A during transition from RRMS to SPMS. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: VEGF-A mRNA expression in peripheral blood mononuclear (PBMC) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cells from RRMS (n = 128), SPMS (n = 55) and controls (n = 116) were analyzed using real time PCR. We demonstrate reduced expression of VEGF-A mRNA in MS CSF cells compared to controls (p<0.001) irrespective of disease course and expression levels are restored by natalizumab treatment(p<0.001). VEGF-A was primarily expressed in monocytes and our CSF findings in part may be explained by effects on relative monocyte proportions. However, VEGF-A mRNA expression was also down regulated in the peripheral compartment of SPMS (p<0.001), despite unchanged monocyte counts, demonstrating a particular phenotype differentiating SPMS from RRMS and controls. A possible association of allelic variability in the VEGF-A gene to risk of MS was also studied by genotyping for six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in MS (n = 1114) and controls (n = 1234), which, however, did not demonstrate any significant association between VEGF-A alleles and risk of MS. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Expression of VEGF-A in CSF cells is reduced in MS patients compared to controls irrespective of disease course. In addition, SPMS patients display reduced VEGF-A mRNA expression in PBMC, which distinguish them from RRMS and controls. This indicates a possible role for VEGF-A in the mechanisms regulating transition to SPMS. Decreased levels of PBMC VEGF-A mRNA expression should be further evaluated as a biomarker for SPMS

Hemispherical differences in the shape and topography of asteroid (101955) Bennu
We investigate the shape of near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu by constructing a high-resolution (20 cm) global digital terrain model from laser altimeter data. By modeling the northern and southern hemispheres separately, we find that longitudinal ridges previously identified in the north extend into the south but are obscured there by surface material. In the south, more numerous large boulders effectively retain surface materials and imply a higher average strength at depth to support them. The north has fewer large boulders and more evidence of boulder dynamics (toppling and downslope movement) and surface flow. These factors result in Bennu’s southern hemisphere being rounder and smoother, whereas its northern hemisphere has higher slopes and a less regular shape. We infer an originally asymmetric distribution of large boulders followed by a partial disruption, leading to wedge formation in Bennu’s history
On deciding to have a lobotomy:either lobotomies were justified or decisions under risk should not always seek to maximise expected utility
In the 1940s and 1950s thousands of lobotomies were performed on people with mental disorders. These operations were known to be dangerous, but thought to offer great hope. Nowadays, the lobotomies of the 1940s and 1950s are widely condemned. The consensus is that the practitioners who employed them were, at best, misguided enthusiasts, or, at worst, evil. In this paper I employ standard decision theory to understand and assess shifts in the evaluation of lobotomy. Textbooks of medical decision making generally recommend that decisions under risk are made so as to maximise expected utility (MEU) I show that using this procedure suggests that the 1940s and 1950s practice of psychosurgery was justifiable. In making sense of this finding we have a choice: Either we can accept that psychosurgery was justified, in which case condemnation of the lobotomists is misplaced. Or, we can conclude that the use of formal decision procedures, such as MEU, is problematic
