Evaluation of the Handshake Turing Test for anthropomorphic Robots
Handshakes are fundamental and common greeting and parting gestures among
humans. They are important in shaping first impressions as people tend to
associate character traits with a person's handshake. To widen the social
acceptability of robots and make a lasting first impression, a good handshaking
ability is an important skill for social robots. Therefore, to test the
human-likeness of a robot handshake, we propose an initial Turing-like test,
primarily for the hardware interface to future AI agents. We evaluate the test
on an android robot's hand to determine if it can pass for a human hand. This
is an important aspect of Turing tests for motor intelligence where humans have
to interact with a physical device rather than a virtual one. We also propose
some modifications to the definition of a Turing test for such scenarios taking

Epigenetic Regulation of p21cip1/waf1 in Human Cancer
p21cip1/waf1 is a central regulator of cell cycle control and survival. While mutations are rare, it is commonly dysregulated in several human cancers due to epigenetic mechanisms influencing its transcriptional control. These mechanisms include promoter hypermethylation as well as additional pathways such as histone acetylation or methylation. The epigenetic regulators include writers, such as DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs); histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone lysine methyltransferases; erasers, such as histone deacetylases (HDACs); histone lysine demethylases [e.g., the Lysine Demethylase (KDM) family]; DNA hydroxylases; readers, such as the methyl-CpG-binding proteins (MBPs); and bromodomain-containing proteins, including the bromo- and extraterminal domain (BET) family. We further discuss the roles that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) play in the epigenetic control of p21cip1/waf1 expression and its function in human cancers

Resolving the terrestrial planet forming regions of HD113766 and HD172555 with MIDI
We present new MIDI interferometric and VISIR spectroscopic observations of
HD113766 and HD172555. Additionally we present VISIR 11um and 18um imaging
observations of HD113766. These sources represent the youngest (16Myr and 12Myr
old respectively) debris disc hosts with emission on <<10AU scales. We find
that the disc of HD113766 is partially resolved on baselines of 42-102m, with
variations in resolution with baseline length consistent with a Gaussian model
for the disc with FWHM of 1.2-1.6AU (9-12mas). This is consistent with the
VISIR observations which place an upper limit of 0."14 (17AU) on the emission,
with no evidence for extended emission at larger distances. For HD172555 the
MIDI observations are consistent with complete resolution of the disc emission
on all baselines of lengths 56-93m, putting the dust at a distance of >1AU
(>35mas). When combined with limits from TReCS imaging the dust at ~10um is
constrained to lie somewhere in the region 1-8AU. Observations at ~18um reveal
extended disc emission which could originate from the outer edge of a broad
disc, the inner parts of which are also detected but not resolved at 10um, or
from a spatially distinct component. These observations provide the most
accurate direct measurements of the location of dust at 1-8AU that might
originate from the collisions expected during terrestrial planet formation.
These observations provide valuable constraints for models of the composition
of discs at this epoch and provide a foundation for future studies to examine

The Na+/H+ exchanger NHE1 is required for directional migration stimulated via PDGFR-α in the primary cilium
We previously demonstrated that the primary cilium coordinates platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptor (PDGFR) α–mediated migration in growth-arrested fibroblasts. In this study, we investigate the functional relationship between ciliary PDGFR-α and the Na+/H+ exchanger NHE1 in directional cell migration. NHE1 messenger RNA and protein levels are up-regulated in NIH3T3 cells and mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) during growth arrest, which is concomitant with cilium formation. NHE1 up-regulation is unaffected in Tg737orpk MEFs, which have no or very short primary cilia. In growth-arrested NIH3T3 cells, NHE1 is activated by the specific PDGFR-α ligand PDGF-AA. In wound-healing assays on growth-arrested NIH3T3 cells and wild-type MEFs, NHE1 inhibition by 5′-(N-ethyl-N-isopropyl) amiloride potently reduces PDGF-AA–mediated directional migration. These effects are strongly attenuated in interphase NIH3T3 cells, which are devoid of primary cilia, and in Tg737orpk MEFs. PDGF-AA failed to stimulate migration in NHE1-null fibroblasts. In conclusion, stimulation of directional migration in response to ciliary PDGFR-α signals is specifically dependent on NHE1 activity, indicating that NHE1 activation is a critical event in the physiological response to PDGFR-α stimulation
Solvolyses of diarylmethyl chlorides. A comprehensive stability scale for diarylcarbenium ions
Eleven donor substituted diarylmethyl chlorides have been solvolyzed in ethanol. The rate constants, determined at 25°C, and additional ethanolysis data taken from the literature have been connected with solvolvsis rate constants, determined in other solvents, to construct a stability scale for 74 diarylcarbenium ions, covering a rate range of> 1012. Correlation equations are given which allow the calculation of solvolysis rates in other solvents, of equilibrium constants, and of rate constants for reactions involving diarylcarbenium ions
New Oleoyl Hybrids of Natural Antioxidants: Synthesis and In Vitro Evaluation as Inducers of Apoptosis in Colorectal Cancer Cells
Nowadays, the beneficial role of a healthy lifestyle, particularly emphasizing the quality of foods and cancer management, is accepted worldwide. Polyphenols and oleic acid play a key role in this context, but are still scarcely used as anti-cancer agents due to their bio-accessibility limits. Therefore, we aimed to synthesize a set of new oleoyl-hybrids of quercetin, morin, pinocembrin, and catechin to overcome the low bioavailability of polyphenols, throughout a bio-catalytic approach using pancreatic porcine lipase as a catalyst. The in vitro assays, using a wide panel of human cancer cell lines showed, mainly for two novel regioisomer oleoyl-hybrids of quercetin, a remarkable increase in apoptotic cell populations. We suggested that the DNA damage shown as ɣH2AX signals might be the major cause of apoptotic cell death. Finally, we demonstrated convincing data about two novel polyphenol-based hybrids displaying a highly selective anti-cancer cytotoxicity and being superior compared to their reference/parental compounds
