Fluorinated halon replacement agents in explosion inerting
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) observed during explosion tests that at a low concentration of agent, some candidate halon replacement agents increased the explosion severity instead of mitigating the event. At UTC Aerospace Systems a test program was developed to assess the behaviour of alternative agents at values below inerting concentration. Two agents were selected, C2HF5 (Penta- fluoroethane, HFC-125) and C6F12O (FK-5-1-12, Novec™1230). Baseline tests were performed with unsuppressed C3H8 (propane)/air mixtures and C3H8/air mixtures with CF3Br (Halon 1301) and N2 (nitrogen). Using CF3Br or N2 at below inerting concentrations mitigated the explosion. C2HF5 was tested against C3H8 at stoichiometric (4 vol%) and lower explosion limit (LEL) (2 vol%). Against 4 vol% C3H8 the combustion was mitigated, proportional to agent concentration; however, low concentrations of C2HF5 with 2 vol% C3H8 enhanced the explosion. Tests with N2 against a volatile mixture of C3H8 with C2HF5 showed that N2 mitigated the events. Final tests were performed with low concentrations of C6F12O against C3H8/air mixtures. This showed similar behaviour to that observed with the C2HF5 tests. Normally during qualification tests for new agents the stoichiometric concentration of a fuel is deemed to be the worst case scenario and the baseline against which agents are tested. The above described test results show that this assumption may need to be reconsidered. This work shows that contrary to common assumption the agents investigated are unlikely to have acted chemically at the flame front, but most likely, mainly cooled the flame and changed the stoichiometry, i.e. the ratio of components of the flammable mixture
Survey of Period Variations of Superhumps in SU UMa-Type Dwarf Novae. VIII: The Eighth Year (2015-2016)
Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, arXiv:0905.1757), we
collected times of superhump maxima for 128 SU UMa-type dwarf novae observed
mainly during the 2015-2016 season and characterized these objects. The data
have improved the distribution of orbital periods, the relation between the
orbital period and the variation of superhumps, the relation between period
variations and the rebrightening type in WZ Sge-type objects. Coupled with new
measurements of mass ratios using growing stages of superhumps, we now have a
clearer and statistically greatly improved evolutionary path near the terminal
stage of evolution of cataclysmic variables. Three objects (V452 Cas, KK Tel,
ASASSN-15cl) appear to have slowly growing superhumps, which is proposed to
reflect the slow growth of the 3:1 resonance near the stability border.
ASASSN-15sl, ASASSN-15ux, SDSS J074859.55+312512.6 and CRTS J200331.3-284941
are newly identified eclipsing SU UMa-type (or WZ Sge-type) dwarf novae.
ASASSN-15cy has a short (~0.050 d) superhump period and appears to belong to EI
Psc-type objects with compact secondaries having an evolved core. ASASSN-15gn,
ASASSN-15hn, ASASSN-15kh and ASASSN-16bu are candidate period bouncers with
superhump periods longer than 0.06 d. We have newly obtained superhump periods
for 79 objects and 13 orbital periods, including periods from early superhumps.
In order that the future observations will be more astrophysically beneficial
and rewarding to observers, we propose guidelines how to organize observations

SN 2008S: an electron capture SN from a super-AGB progenitor?
We present comprehensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of the
faint transient SN 2008S discovered in NGC 6946. SN 2008S exhibited slow
photometric evolution and almost no spectral variability during the first nine
months, implying a high density CS medium. The light curve is similar in shape
to that of SN 1998S and SN 1979C, although significantly fainter at maximum
light. Our quasi-bolometric lightcurve extends to 300 days and shows a tail
phase decay rate consistent with that of ^{56}Co. We propose that this is
evidence for an explosion and formation of ^{56}Ni (0.0015 +/- 0.0004 M_Sun).
The large MIR flux detected shortly after explosion can be explained by a light
echo from pre-exisiting dust. The late NIR flux excess is plausibly due to a
combination of warm newly-formed ejecta dust together with shock-heated dust in
the CS environment. We reassess the progenitor object detected previously in
Spitzer archive images, supplementing this discussion with a model of the MIR
spectral energy distribution. This supports the idea of a dusty, optically
thick shell around SN 2008S with an inner radius of nearly 90AU and outer
radius of 450AU, and an inferred heating source of 3000 K and luminosity of L ~
10^{4.6} L_Sun. The combination of our monitoring data and the evidence from
the progenitor analysis leads us to support the scenario of a weak electron
capture supernova explosion in a super-AGB progenitor star (of initial mass 6-8
M_sun) embedded within a thick CS gaseous envelope. We suggest that all of main
properties of the electron capture SN phenomenon are observed in SN 2008S and

Increasing Support for Contraception as HIV Prevention: Stakeholder Mapping to Identify Influential Individuals and Their Perceptions
BACKGROUND: Voluntary contraceptive use by HIV-positive women currently prevents more HIV-positive births, at a lower cost, than anti-retroviral drug (ARV) regimens. Despite this evidence, most prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programs focus solely on providing ARV prophylaxis to pregnant women and rarely include the prevention of unintended pregnancies among HIV-positive women. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To strengthen support for family planning as HIV prevention, we systematically identified key individuals in the field of international HIV/AIDS-those who could potentially influence the issue-and sought to determine their perceptions of barriers to and facilitators for implementing this PMTCT strategy. We used a criteria-based approach to determine which HIV/AIDS stakeholders have the most significant impact on HIV/AIDS research, programs, funding and policy and stratified purposive sampling to conduct interviews with a subset of these individuals. The interview findings pointed to obstacles to strengthening linkages between family planning and HIV/AIDS, including the need for: resources to integrate family planning and HIV services, infrastructure or capacity to provide integrated services at the facility level, national leadership and coordination, and targeted advocacy to key decision-makers. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The individuals we identified as having regional or international influence in the field of HIV/AIDS have the ability to leverage an increasingly conducive funding environment and a growing evidence base to address the policy, programmatic and operational challenges to integrating family planning with HIV/AIDS. Fostering greater support for implementing contraception for HIV prevention will require the dedication, collaboration and coordination of many such actors.
