Surface Estimation of Site Structure and Content, Dolores Project
In a program with a regional focus such as the Dolores Project, it is clearly impossible to excavate all the known sites, or even a very large sample of them, and, inevitably much of our inference concerning distributions of artifacts and human populations must be based on surface collection. A major emphasis of the Dolores Archaeological Program is to develop and test models for the relationship of surface materials and patterns to subsurface materials and features in order to eventually use surface information for the estimation of human population size. The progress of the investigation of these questions in the Dolores area to date has been hindered by the small sample of sites with analyzed excavated data. This situation has changed so recently that much of what follows here is more a program for study than an enumeration of accomplished results
