    Dimensionality-Driven Metal-Insulator Transition in Spin-Orbit-Coupled SrIrO3

    Upon reduction of the film thickness we observe a metal-insulator transition in epitaxially stabilized, spin-orbit-coupled SrIrO3 ultrathin films. By comparison of the experimental electronic dispersions with density functional theory at various levels of complexity we identify the leading microscopic mechanisms, i.e., a dimensionality-induced readjustment of octahedral rotations, magnetism, and electronic correlations. The astonishing resemblance of the band structure in the two-dimensional limit to that of bulk Sr2IrO4 opens new avenues to unconventional superconductivity by "clean" electron doping through electric field gating

    Limit on the Radiative Neutrinoless Double Electron Capture of 36^{36}Ar from GERDA Phase I

    Neutrinoless double electron capture is a process that, if detected, would give evidence of lepton number violation and the Majorana nature of neutrinos. A search for neutrinoless double electron capture of 36^{36}Ar has been performed with germanium detectors installed in liquid argon using data from Phase I of the GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment at the Gran Sasso Laboratory of INFN, Italy. No signal was observed and an experimental lower limit on the half-life of the radiative neutrinoless double electron capture of 36^{36}Ar was established: T1/2>T_{1/2} > 3.6 ×\times 1021^{21} yr at 90 % C.I.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Flux Modulations seen by the Muon Veto of the GERDA Experiment

    The GERDA experiment at LNGS of INFN is equipped with an active muon veto. The main part of the system is a water Cherenkov veto with 66~PMTs in the water tank surrounding the GERDA cryostat. The muon flux recorded by this veto shows a seasonal modulation. Two effects have been identified which are caused by secondary muons from the CNGS neutrino beam (2.2 %) and a temperature modulation of the atmosphere (1.4 %). A mean cosmic muon rate of IÎŒ0=(3.477±0.002stat±0.067sys)×10−4I^0_{\mu} = (3.477 \pm 0.002_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 0.067_{\textrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-4}/(s⋅\cdotm2^2) was found in good agreement with other experiments at LNGS at a depth of 3500~meter water equivalent.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Evidence of a causal and modifiable relationship between kidney function and circulating trimethylamine N-oxide

    The host-microbiota co-metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is linked to increased cardiovascular risk but how its circulating levels are regulated remains unclear. We applied "explainable" machine learning, univariate, multivariate and mediation analyses of fasting plasma TMAO concentration and a multitude of phenotypes in 1,741 adult Europeans of the MetaCardis study. Here we show that next to age, kidney function is the primary variable predicting circulating TMAO, with microbiota composition and diet playing minor, albeit significant, roles. Mediation analysis suggests a causal relationship between TMAO and kidney function that we corroborate in preclinical models where TMAO exposure increases kidney scarring. Consistent with our findings, patients receiving glucose-lowering drugs with reno-protective properties have significantly lower circulating TMAO when compared to propensity-score matched control individuals. Our analyses uncover a bidirectional relationship between kidney function and TMAO that can potentially be modified by reno-protective anti-diabetic drugs and suggest a clinically actionable intervention for decreasing TMAO-associated excess cardiovascular risk

    Replication studies in psychological science sometimes fail to reproduce prior findings. If these studies use methods that are unfaithful to the original study or ineffective in eliciting the phenomenon of interest, then a failure to replicate may be a failure of the protocol rather than a challenge to the original finding. Formal pre-data-collection peer review by experts may address shortcomings and increase replicability rates. We selected 10 replication studies from the Reproducibility Project: Psychology (RP:P; Open Science Collaboration, 2015) for which the original authors had expressed concerns about the replication designs before data collection; only one of these studies had yielded a statistically significant effect (p < .05). Commenters suggested that lack of adherence to expert review and low-powered tests were the reasons that most of these RP:P studies failed to replicate the original effects. We revised the replication protocols and received formal peer review prior to conducting new replication studies. We administered the RP:P and revised protocols in multiple laboratories (median number of laboratories per original study = 6.5, range = 3?9; median total sample = 1,279.5, range = 276?3,512) for high-powered tests of each original finding with both protocols. Overall, following the preregistered analysis plan, we found that the revised protocols produced effect sizes similar to those of the RP:P protocols (?r = .002 or .014, depending on analytic approach). The median effect size for the revised protocols (r = .05) was similar to that of the RP:P protocols (r = .04) and the original RP:P replications (r = .11), and smaller than that of the original studies (r = .37). Analysis of the cumulative evidence across the original studies and the corresponding three replication attempts provided very precise estimates of the 10 tested effects and indicated that their effect sizes (median r = .07, range = .00?.15) were 78% smaller, on average, than the original effect sizes (median r = .37, range = .19?.50)

    Profile of the circulating DNA in apparently healthy individuals

    BACKGROUND: Circulating nucleic acids (CNAs) have been shown to have diagnostic utility in human diseases. The aim of this study was to sequence and organize CNAs to document typical profiles of circulating DNA in apparently healthy individuals. METHODS: Serum DNA from 51 apparently healthy humans was extracted, amplified, sequenced via pyrosequencing (454 Life Sciences/Roche Diagnostics), and categorized by (a) origin (human vs xenogeneic), (b) functionality (repeats, genes, coding or noncoding), and (c) chromosomal localization. CNA results were compared with genomic DNA controls (n = 4) that were subjected to the identical procedure. RESULTS: We obtained 4.5 x 10(5) sequences (7.5 x 10(7) nucleotides), of which 87% were attributable to known database sequences. Of these sequences, 97% were genomic, and 3% were xenogeneic. CNAs and genomic DNA did not differ with respect to sequences attributable to repeats, genes, RNA, and protein-coding DNA sequences. CNA tended to have a higher proportion of short interspersed nuclear element sequences (P = 0.1), of which Alu sequences were significant (P < 0.01). CNAs had a significantly lower proportion of L1 and L2 long interspersed nuclear element sequences (P < 0.01). In addition, hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype F sequences were found in an individual accidentally evaluated as a healthy control. CONCLUSIONS: Comparison of CNAs with genomic DNA suggests that nonspecific DNA release is not the sole origin for CNAs. The CNA profiling of healthy individuals we have described, together with the detailed biometric analysis, provides the basis for future studies of patients with specific diseases. Furthermore, the detection of previously unknown HBV infection suggests the capability of this method to uncover occult infections

    ESPEN Guidelines on Parenteral Nutrition: Hepatology

    Parenteral nutrition (PN) offers the possibility to increase or to ensure nutrient intake in patients, in whom sufficient nutrition by oral or enteral alone is insuf&#64257;cient or impossible. Complementary to the ESPEN guideline on enteral nutrition of liver disease (LD) patients the present guideline is intended to give evidence-based recommendations for the use of PN in LD. For this purpose three paradigm conditions of LD were chosen: alcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH), liver cirrhosis and acute liver failure. The guideline was developed by an interdisciplinary expert group in accordance with of&#64257;cially accepted standards and is based on all relevant publications since 1985. The guideline was presented on the ESPEN website and visitors\u2019 criticism and suggestions were welcome and included in the final revision. PN improves nutritional state and liver function in malnourished patients with ASH. PN is safe and improves mental state in patients with cirrhosis and severe HE. Perioperative (including liver transplantation) PN is safe and reduces the rate of complications. In acute liver failure PN is a safe second-line option to adequately feed patients in whom enteral nutrition is insufficient or impossible
