    Fatigue and Fracture Library for the Inspection, Evaluation, and Repair of Vehicular Steel Bridges

    Of all the limit states that affect the performance of steel bridges, fatigue and fracture are often misunderstood when it comes to design, inspection, and repair/retrofit. Although there is a wealth of research and case studies of failures related to cracking in the literature, few civil engineering programs offer any courses that spend more than a lecture or two on these topics. There are even fewer courses or credible reference manuals available on the repair and retrofit of steel bridges that are in service. Hence, owners often are left to develop their own strategies when it comes to repair or retrofit. Unfortunately, in some cases, the repair or retrofit selected has been observed to make the condition worse due to a lack of understanding of the problem, lack of available reference materials, and/or lack of experienced personnel. The intent of this document is to provide engineers and inspectors with technical guidance regarding evaluation, repair, and retrofit procedures for both common as well as nonstandard, noncompliant, or failed details commonly encountered on steel bridge structures

    Emergent properties of electrically coupled smooth muscle cells

    Asynchronous and synchronous calcium oscillations occur in a variety of cells. A well-established pathway for intercellular communication is provided by gap junctions which connect adjacent cells and can mediate electrical and chemical coupling. Several experimental studies report that cells presenting only a transient increase when freshly dispersed may oscillate when they are coupled. Such observations suggest that the role of gap junctions is not only to coordinate calcium oscillations of adjacent cells. Gap junctions may also be important to generate oscillations. Here we illustrate the emergent properties of electrically coupled smooth muscle cells using a model that we recently proposed. A bifurcation analysis in the case of two cells reveals that synchronous and asynchronous calcium oscillations can be induced by electrical coupling. In a larger population of smooth muscle cells, electrical coupling may result in the creation of groups of cells presenting synchronous calcium oscillations. The elements of one group may be distant from each other. Moreover, our results highlight a general mechanism by which gap junctional electrical coupling can give rise to out of phase calcium oscillations in smooth muscle cells that are non-oscillating when uncoupled. All these observations remain true in the case of non-identical cells, except that the solution corresponding to synchronous calcium oscillations disappears and that the formation of groups is sensitive to the degree of heterogeneity. © 2005 Society for Mathematical Biology.     Can longitudinal generalized estimating equation models distinguish network influence and homophily? An agent-based modeling approach to measurement characteristics

    Abstract Background Connected individuals (or nodes) in a network are more likely to be similar than two randomly selected nodes due to homophily and/or network influence. Distinguishing between these two influences is an important goal in network analysis, and generalized estimating equation (GEE) analyses of longitudinal dyadic network data are an attractive approach. It is not known to what extent such regressions can accurately extract underlying data generating processes. Therefore our primary objective is to determine to what extent, and under what conditions, does the GEE-approach recreate the actual dynamics in an agent-based model. Methods We generated simulated cohorts with pre-specified network characteristics and attachments in both static and dynamic networks, and we varied the presence of homophily and network influence. We then used statistical regression and examined the GEE model performance in each cohort to determine whether the model was able to detect the presence of homophily and network influence. Results In cohorts with both static and dynamic networks, we find that the GEE models have excellent sensitivity and reasonable specificity for determining the presence or absence of network influence, but little ability to distinguish whether or not homophily is present. Conclusions The GEE models are a valuable tool to examine for the presence of network influence in longitudinal data, but are quite limited with respect to homophily.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/134740/1/12874_2016_Article_274.pd

    A Five-brane Modulus in the Effective N=1 Supergravity of M-Theory

    Five-branes lead in four dimensions to massless N=1 supermultiplets if M-theory is compactified on S1/Z2 x (a Calabi-Yau threefold). One of them describes the modulus associated with the position of the five-brane along the circle S1. We derive the effective four-dimensional supergravity of this multiplet and its coupling to bulk moduli and to Yang-Mills and charged matter multiplets located on Z2 fixed planes. The dynamics of the five-brane modes is obtained by reduction and supersymmetrization of the covariant five-brane bosonic action. Our construction respects all symmetries of M-theory, including the self-duality of the brane antisymmetric tensor. Corrections to gauge couplings are strongly constrained by this self-duality property. The brane contribution to the effective scalar potential is formally similar to a renormalization of the dilaton. The vacuum structure is not modified. Altogether, the impact of the five-brane modulus on the effective supergravity is reminiscent of string one-loop corrections produced by standard compactification moduli.Comment: 34 pages, LaTe

    Ergonomics and sustainability: Towards and embrace of complexity and emergence

    Technology offers a promising route to a sustainable future, and ergonomics can serve a vital role. The argument of this article is that the lasting success of sustainability initiatives in ergonomics hinges on an examination of ergonomics' own epistemology and ethics. The epistemology of ergonomics is fundamentally empiricist and positivist. This places practical constraints on its ability to address important issues such as sustainability, emergence and complexity. The implicit ethical position of ergonomics is one of neutrality, and its positivist epistemology generally puts value-laden questions outside the parameters of what it sees as scientific practice. We argue, by contrast, that a discipline that deals with both technology and human beings cannot avoid engaging with questions of complexity and emergence and seeking innovative ways of addressing these issues.No Full Tex
