Biochemical and quality changes of sweet cherries cv. Regina were assessed over three consecutive years after storage in different modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) liners, with or without hydrocooling, compared to regular atmosphere (RA) storage. All plastic liners used in the experiment resulted in CO2-enrichment and O2-reduction inside packages, with the following impact on fruit quality after five weeks of storage: improved retention of fruit firmness and red color of skin, no significant effect on acidity and total soluble solids, and minimal loss of fruit weight. Fruit decay was absent under both storage conditions (RA and MAP), probably due to rain-protected cultivation of cherry trees. Stalks of MAP-fruits remained fresher than control fruits, obviously due to higher relative humidity condition inside packages. MA-packaged cherries were preferred by the taste panel, while cold-stored fruits were criticized due to flat and slightly bitter taste. The ATP concentration in air stored fruits was higher than in MA-packaged fruits, while ADP level was higher in MA-packaged fruits. Further, MA-packed sweet cherries exhibited higher antioxidant potential and ascorbic acid content than air-stored fruits. Moreover, hydrocooling did not cause any significant effect compared to nontreated fruits

This paper shows the results from my research trajectory and my collaboration in cooperative projects with economically disadvantaged people of the urban periphery of Francisco Beltrão (Brazil). I initially reflect on the relevance of an analysis of urban social movements, asking how current urban conflicts can be understood from a territorial perspective. I will first develop a specific definition of territory, which seeks to become operative in collaboration with diverse subjects and in the analysis of territorial development based on the place. Such a conceptualization of territory provides a territorial analysis furthering transformation towards a fairer, solidary, and ecological society. I show how this fairer society emerges in a multidimensional way, emanating from the processes of territorialization, deterritorialization, and reterritorialization. Finally, by linking these processes with the current processes of territorial development (in research, analysis, and active participation), this study contributes to a more dialogical and counter-hegemonic perspective, especially in relation to Latin America.</p

The main aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of temperatures and oxygen concentrations in controlled atmosphere (CA) storage on the quality, conservation and breakdown of 'Fuji' apples, during storage. Fruits used had already been stored in cold storage during 72 days, and exhibited 17% of internal breakdown. Afterwards they were stored at two different temperatures (1 °C and 2 °C) and in different CA conditions: 0%CO2/1%O2, 0%CO2/ 1.5%O2 and 0%CO2/2%O2. After a six months storage, fruits at 1 °C and at lower oxygen concentrations (0%CO2/ 1%O2 and 0%CO2/1.5%O2) showed less internal and external breakdown and had higher firmness than fruits that had been stored at 2°C or at higher oxygen concentrations (0%CO/2%O2). Tritatable acidity, however, was higher at 2 °C.

Sessões PosterCilantro (Coriandrum sativum L.) has become one of the most widely used fresh herbs worldwide. In addition to its flavorful culinary attributes, cilantro has been promoted by public health authorities as partial replacement of dietary salt intake. The objective of this study was to characterize the postharvest behavior of fresh cilantro to provide recommendations for proper postharvest handling. Freshly harvested cilantro leaves were bunched into 50 g bunches held by a rubber band, wrapped in plastic, cooled to ca. 5 ºC and transported to the laboratory within 2 h after harvest. The leaf bunches were placed at 0º, 10º, and 20 ºC, and assessed for mass loss, ethylene production rate, respiration rate, color, and chlorophyll content. Hedonic assessment of appearance and odor were also performed. Under these experimental conditions, fresh mass declined at a rate of 1.1; 1.5; and 6.3% per day, at 0º, 10º and 20 ºC, respectively. Ethylene production rate remained stable during storage at 0º or 10 ºC, at 0.26 and 1.61 μL kg-1 h-1, respectively. At 20 ºC, the initial ethylene production rate of 4.04 μL kg-1 h-1 increased sharply after 4 days to reach 25.64 μL kg-1 h-1 at day 7 due to fungal development. The initial respiration rate, expressed in mL CO2 kg-1 h-1, was 7.7 at 0 ºC, 27.8 at 10 ºC and 114.1 at 20 ºC, and remained relatively stable during storage at 0 and 10 ºC. However, respiration rate double during 7 days at 20 ºC due to decay. The initial hue angle of cilantro leaflets was 124.7º, a value that remained relatively constant during 30 days at 0 ºC, but decreased slightly (2 to 3%) after 15 days at 10 ºC or 4 days at 20 ºC. The initial SPAD index of 42.2 decreased to 37.7 after 4 days at 20 ºC, to 35.6 after 15 days at 10 ºC and to 39.6 after 30 days at 0 ºC. Total chlorophyll content at harvest was 1.92 mg g-1 with a ratio of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b of 3.2. Chlorophyll content decreased slightly at 10º and 20 ºC, mainly due to the reduction in chlorophyll b but remained unaltered during 30 days at 0 ºC. The duration of postharvest life based on appearance was 1.6; 7.3, and 11 days at 20º, 10º and 0 ºC, respectively. However, odor was judged at the sales limit after 1.0; 2.0; and 9.0 days at 20º, 10º, and 0 ºC, respectively. In conclusion, the main causes of shelf-life termination are odor suppression and fungal development. Wilting can be reduced by packaging and senescence-related chlorophyll loss and yellowing are slower than odor suppression. Freshness is best preserved at 0 ºCinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Rbm24 displays dynamic functions required for myogenic differentiation during muscle regeneration

Skeletal muscle has a remarkable capacity of regeneration after injury, but the regulatory network underlying this repair process remains elusive. RNA-binding proteins play key roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression and the maintenance of tissue homeostasis and plasticity. Rbm24 regulates myogenic differentiation during early development, but its implication in adult muscle is poorly understood. Here we show that it exerts multiple functions in muscle regeneration. Consistent with its dynamic subcellular localization during embryonic muscle development, Rbm24 also displays cytoplasm to nucleus translocation during C2C12 myoblast differentiation. In adult mice, Rbm24 mRNA is enriched in slow-twitch muscles along with myogenin mRNA. The protein displays nuclear localization in both slow and fast myofibers. Upon injury, Rbm24 is rapidly upregulated in regenerating myofibers and accumulates in the myonucleus of nascent myofibers. Through satellite cell transplantation, we demonstrate that Rbm24 functions sequentially to regulate myogenic differentiation and muscle regeneration. It is required for myogenin expression at early stages of muscle injury and for muscle-specific pre-mRNA alternative splicing at late stages of regeneration. These results identify Rbm24 as a multifaceted regulator of myoblast differentiation. They provide insights into the molecular pathway orchestrating the expression of myogenic factors and muscle functional proteins during regeneration
