How do the political constraints of the host country affect the choice of a new geographical market in the construction sector?
MNEs, before taking a decision to internationalize, should analyze the macro environment
factors affecting a foreign market, which avoids/decreases uncertainty. Hence, understanding
the political constraints when choosing the geographical market is imperative. This is true,
especially for the construction industry because it is a regulated industry, which means that
companies need to have a permit from the government in order to operate in this industry.
Furthermore, companies working in the heavy construction industry have the government as
their main client because most of the projects are public. In order to understand the political
factors affecting the choice of a new geographical market we did participant observation and
conduct four interviews to the managers of a Portuguese scaffolder services provider company.
Our findings suggest that the relationships between companies and governments are
particularly important in countries characterized by political instability. In countries with high
policy discretion, in which the ruling body can change the law suddenly according to their
preferences, it is essential to establish close ties with the government. If the company is able to
establish stronger ties, it has competitive advantage, if not, managers are risk averse and tend
to not invest in that country. Companies that invest in a foreign country, without that capability,
may fail due to the institutional distance and the lack of managerial training. Furthermore, the
stability of the country influences the commitment and confidence of a firm in that market.
The science of scientific agendas: insights into the agenda setting process of researchers
Even though research agenda-setting is at the core of modern research and development activities, little is known regarding the process that leads to the definition of an agenda. The literature indirectly suggests that a series of both exogenous and endogenous factors may shape the preference of researchers concerning the research agendas they intend on pursuing – such as formal education, hierarchical position, working environment, incentives, scientific drive, creativity, risk tolerance, and personality. However, no study has been conducted in order to formally test these associations comprehensively. This project aims to identify the mechanisms underlying research agenda-setting through a multi-stage, multi-disciplinary approach. To this end, new instruments were developed – one focusing on evaluating the factors that influence research agenda setting, and another focusing on workplace related organizational aspects in the academia. Following this, Cluster Analysis was employed in order to determine the existence of overarching doctrines in terms of research agenda setting, and afterwards we explore how cognition can influence the process of research agenda setting. This was followed by an exploratory study on how the organizational setting influences these dynamics and how research agendas are also gendered. A second, more holistic, comprehensive and optimal revision of the initial research-agendas instrument concludes this project, resulting from lessons learned and knowledge acquired as the thesis was being developed. The thesis concludes with an overall discussion of the findings and its contribution to knowledge advancement, implications for practice and policymaking, and the limitations of the study, as well as an agenda for future studies.
Further contributions towards the molecular analysis of NIPBL and SMC1A genes in a cohort of patients with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome
Resumo publicado em: European Journal of Human Genetics. 2012 Jun 1;20 Suppl 1: Sec1:298Cornelia de Lange Syndrome [CdLS (MIM#122470)] is a rare multisystemic disorder, characterized by a
typical phenotype that includes distinctive facial dysmorphism, hirsutism, growth and psychomotor
developmental delay, abnormalities of the upper extremities, and relatively frequent gastrointestinal and
congenital heart defects. CdLS is essentially caused by mutations in the NIPBL and SMC1A genes (~50%
and 5% of cases, respectively), but mutations have been also described in other genes (PDS5A, PDS5B,
SMC3) (http://www.lovd.nl/CDLS). This genetic heterogeneity in CdLS can however be explained by a close
functional relationship at the cellular level, since all these proteins are involved in chromatid cohesion.
The molecular and clinical characterization of 42 Portuguese CdLS patients has been previously described
(Oliveira et al., 2010). In this work we conducted the molecular analysis of NIPBL gene and more recently
expanded this study to other 20 patients. Subsequently, all the molecularly unresolved patients were
screened for large deletions and duplications in NIPBL by MLPA, and point mutations in SMC1A by high
resolution melting curve analysis and sequencing.
Preliminary results allowed us to identify 4 previously known mutations (including a case with somatic
mosaicism), 3 novel mutations (c.3316C>T, c.6983C>G and c.7307C>T) and 2 large deletions in the NIPBL
gene. Mutation screening in SMC1A is still ongoing.
Our results, at least for NIPBL gene analysis, suggest that the use of several different techniques is essential
for attaining a high mutation detection rate. CdLS cases with somatic mosaicism are probably
underestimated in the literature and may explain some degree of phenotypical variability
The presented paper focuses on the general geometry criteria of an airport’s infrastructure, particularly on the runway and taxway, assessing its sizing aspects regarding the faced constraints. The research work was directed towards the geometric design standards, their application and sizing restrictions, including the main aspects to consider when working on airport related projects.
The development of the Master’s Final Thesis, allowed for the collection of the main criteria on this field of infrastructures and transportation, followed by a critical analysis of the standards and methodology applied on the execution of a airport runway, in order to select the most relevant conceptual criteria, given the existing constraints and the demands associated to such a project.
In addition to the paper a case study was created with the goal of applying the standards and criteria to a real airport infrastructure project, the enlargement of the taxiway “F” of the Francisco de Sá Carneiro airport, in Oporto. The implementation of concepts was only made possible due to the collaboration on the mention project through a 4 month internship at SENER-ENGIVIA, Consultores de Engenheria, S.A.
With this approach it was possible to conclude that the existing standards available in Portuguese are very scarce and not accessible, which leads to the use of international standards, often difficult to interpret. It is also to be noted that the information is often contradictory, with various differences found when comparing Portuguese written documents with international documents in some parameters, with no corroboration on which parameter to adopt.
In conclusion, the study showed the importance of elaborating a national document with all the information uniformized to be used a search base for standards, even if they are adopted from international standards, to facilitate the comprehension of all the actors, as is the case of the designers of the airport strips.N/

GRASS UTILIZATION IN GROWING FINISHING BÍSARO PIGS (85-107 KG). PERFORMANCE AND CARCASS COMPOSITION
The use of different quantities of vegetables, forages or fresh grass as fodder for growing-finishing pigs is an important factor of the northern Portugal traditional system. The increasing development of swine production in outdoor systems, extensive and organic production, turns to upcoming natural diets, in which grass performs a significant part. With regard to this, some investigation has been made concerning the use of fibre-rich feed ingredients in pig nutrition. Metabolic effects of its ingestion are analysed concerning different sights (economical, social, environmental and physiological ones).
The aim of this work was to study the effects of grass utilization in the diets on performances of finishing Bísaro pigs. A total of 22 pigs (16 castrated males and 6 females) was housed outdoor and fed ad libitum (37 – 85 kg live weight) with a growing diet and then transferred to an indoor system (with free access to an outdoor area) for 49 days, according to 3 different treatments: 100% concentrate (C), 75% concentrate + ad libitum grass (CE75), 50% concentrate + ad libitum grass (CE50). The grass was supplied and its intake registered on a daily basis. Every 14 days, the pigs were weighted and their back fat (P2 in vivo) measured. After slaughter (average weight of 107 kg LW), yield and ½ left carcass characteristics were controlled. During the outdoor growing phase, the ADG was 513 g/day. During the indoor finishing phase, the increase grass intake was proportional to the reduction of concentrate in the diet. The ADG (g) and the fat deposition (P2 cm) were significantly different (P<0,05) in the 3 treatments (ADG: C=641, CE75=467, CE50=356 and: C=11,4, CE75=+9,5, CE50=+6,2). The empty body weight (kg) was also proportional to the intake of concentrate (C=116,2; CE75=107,7; CE50=102,2). Comparatively to the weight of the body parts, pigs that had higher intake of grass and lower of concentrate showed a higher % of shoulder (P<0,05; C=20,4, CE75=21,7, CE50=22,2) and the pH45min of CE carcasses was significantly higher (P<0,05). As a conclusion, concentrate substitution for grass showed a slower growing rate, thinner carcasses and a high technological quality.
Neverthelles variability (CV %) of the productive parameters at the end of this study were higher in the treatments that included grass: live weight (C= 10,5%; C75=10,7%; C50=14,3%), finishing ADG (C=24%; C75=37%, C50=42%), and final fat (C=37%; C75=32%, C50=52%). These values suggest that the utilization of fibrous feeds in growing-finishing swine may be one of the possible explanations of the more heterogeneous products and carcasses found in the traditional or extensive systems, common users of fibrous feeds in the carcass finishing phase
Consegue a
estatístico nas áreas de maior interesseHow can the industrial dynamics approach contribute to the identification of the
continuities and discontinuities in the franchise sector in Portugal? Can the life-cycle
theory of industries explain the evolution of a sophisticated services industry such as
franchise? This Dissertation aims to understand how the movement of births, deaths and
survivals of companies affected the evolution of the franchise sector in the Portuguese
economy between 1996 and 2013. For the effect of the franchising sector analysis in the
Portuguese economy was used the theoretical approach based on industrial dynamics
and focused on theory of industry life cycle and demographics. Additionally, stylized
facts about franchise and industrial dynamics were identified the in existing literature.
The database gathered from the industry itself encompassed 1460 distinct franchise
brands operating in Portugal between 1996 and 2013. At the beginning of this study, the
aim was to contribute to the explanation of the evolutionary behavior of franchise in
Portugal based on theory of industry life cycle. Generally, the results were consistent
with the industrial dynamics theory as well as with the franchising literature. Other
analytical approaches could have been deepened, as for example in terms of the
dimensions of the brands or the development of an econometric model, but we believe
that this study serves as a starting point for future analysis. This thesis also gives clues
to a new interpretation of the franchise business in Portugal and increase relevance to
the statistical survey in the areas of greatest interes
Automatic determination of pauses in speech for classification of stuttering disorder
An algorithm to automatically identify segments of silence or speech is presented. The algorithm was
developed to measure the silence periods in spontaneous and read speech. These silence periods are
one of the parameters used to know the degree of severity of stuttered speech. For this purpose the three
longer disfluent events (pauses or other disfluent events) and also the percentage of silence are useful.
The algorithm is based on the evaluation of the energy and the zero crossing rate of the signal compared
to the threshold values previously determined in silence. One experiment with eight subjects is described
using the Stuttering Severity Instrument for Children and Adults – SSI and the percentage of silence in
speech. It was concluded that the percentage of silence is good enough to separate stuttered from the
normal speech but alone is not capable of measuring the degree of severity of the stuttered speech.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
