Rheology attempts to define a relationship between the stress acting on a given material and the resulting deformation and/or flow that takes place. Thus, the knowledge of rheological properties of fluid materials such as vegetable oils generates auxiliary data that can be used in its storage and application. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the rheological behavior of vegetable oils (cotton, canola, sunflower, corn and soybean) at different temperatures, using four rheological models (Ostwald- de-Waelle, Herschel-Bulkley, Newton and Bingham). The rheological properties were determined using a Thermo Haake rheometer with concentric cylinder geometry. Measurements were taken at 30, 45 and 60 °C by controlling the temperature using a thermostatic bath coupled to the equipment. The software Rheowin Pro Job Manager was used for process control and data record. The rheograms were obtained by measuring the values of shear stress varying the shear rate from 100 to 600 s-1 within 250 seconds. For the analysis of the apparent viscosity at different shear rates was applied simple linear regression until 2nd degree with the aid of SAS (SAS/Stat 9.2) program. The apparent viscosity data were submitted to analysis of variance and the averages were compared by Tukey test at 5% of probability. Higher temperatures of the samples were correlated to lower shear stress values, hence lower values for viscosity and consistency index were obtained, since it is known that the density and viscosity are highly sensitive to temperature and that the increase in temperature results in reduction of viscosity, benefiting the fluid flow. The models of Newton and Ostwald-de-Waelle were chosen to evaluate the rheological behavior of the samples, showing a good fit for the rheological data

This study assessed the acid-adaptation of pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli in orange juice and the microbial resistance to the subsequent UV-C radiation treatment. Nine Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and one strain of a non-pathogenic surrogate E. coli were used in this study. Each E. coli strain was inoculated in orange juice, following pre-exposure during 0, 1, 2, and 3 h at 10 ◦C. Then, the inoculated juices with the ten different strains separately were exposed to 0 and 2 J/cm2 of UV-C radiation. The D value (i.e., the UV-C dose in J/cm2 required to cause a one-log reduction in the target microorganism) was calculated. Further, the resistance coefficient [RC; i.e., the ratio between the D-values for the control condition (D0h) and each preexposure tested time (D1h, D2h, D3h)] were determined. The results indicated that the resistance of E. coli was influenced by the pre-exposure period in the orange juice, with increased resistance to UV-C observed for periods >2 h. Furthermore, the sensitivity of cells to subsequent UV-C treatment was found to be strain-dependent. The results may allow the development of more reliable UV-C radiation processes for orange juice processing aiming the inactivation of pathogenic E. coli.

Automated equipment, whose use is established in hematology of domestic animals, is not yet routinely used in blood cells count of wildlife, due to lack of studies that validate its use. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the automated technique for blood cells count of ocelots (Leopardus pardalis), comparing it with the manual technique. Blood samples were collected from eight ocelots, which were submitted to counting of erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets and packed cell volume by the standard manual method and by the device VET ® 2800 BC with the configuration for domestic cats. The results were evaluated using the t test for paired data and the techniques submitted to Pearson correlation. The automated technique showed statistically similar results to erythrocytes and leukocytes. Significant difference was found only for packed cell volume between the manual and automated techniques, but the correlation was high. Although there was no significant difference between the techniques for platelets, the correlation was low. We concluded that the 2800 BC VET ® device with the configuration for domestic cats is a reliable technique in performing the erythrocyte and leukocyte counts for ocelots. The device may be used to determine packed cell volume, provided the correction is made. The manual technique is recommended for the platelet count

The blood group system recognized for cats is AB. Antibodies against other blood types occur naturally in cats, which makes the compatibility tests and blood typing important for preventing transfusion reactions. Wild felids need blood transfusions in cases of diseases and when run over on highways. The aim of this study was to perform blood typing of eight jaguarundies (Puma yagouaroundi), eight ocelots (Leopardus pardalis), seven pampas cats (Leopardus colocolo), seven domestic cats (Felis catus) of Persian breed and eight non-pedigree domestic cats (Felis catus), and test compatibility among the different species with the same blood types, to evaluate the possibility of performing interspecific blood transfusions. We conducted the study from August to December. We used haemagglutination in test tubes for typing. The occurrence of blood type A was 100% among ocelots, pampas cats and domestic cats of Persian breed, while non-pedigree domestic cats showed 85.72%. The occurrence of type B was 100% for jaguarundis and 14.28% for non-pedigree domestic cats. Regarding blood compatibility tests, 87.5% (n= 4) of the ocelots were incompatible with domestic cats; 100% (n=6) of the pampas cats were compatible with domestic cats, while 100% (n=4) of the jaguarundis were incompatible with type B domestic cats

Hands and feet of dogs are commonly affected by neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. These lesions may commonly present poor clinical or histopathological prognosis and amputation tends to be the treatment of choice. Previous studies regarding the prevalence and the clinicopathological aspects of digital changes in dogs have been performed abroad, with no similar investigations in Brazil. The aim of this manuscript was to perform a histopathological study to characterize hands and feet lesions of dogs from Brazil.Tissue samples from 105 tumor-like lesions of dogs hands and feet were used in this study. The samples came from three Brazilian veterinary diagnostic laboratories and were collected between 2003 and 2016. All specimens were fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and routinely processed for paraffin embedding and hematoxylin-eosin staining. Additionally, toluidine blue, Brown and Breen, periodic acid Schiff (PAS), Grocott Methenamine Silver (GMS) and Ziehl Neelsen were used in selected cases. Immunohistochemistry using anti-Leishmania spp., anti-CD117, anti-CD79, anti-CD3, anti-Melan A, anti-lysozyme, anti-Pancytokeratin AE1/AE3, and anti-vimentin antibodies were also performed. Neoplasia (62.9%) was the most frequently found lesion, followed by inflammation (19%), and other changes (18.1%). Among the neoplasms, 40.9% were mesenchymal, 39.4% epithelial, and 19.7% round cells. All round cells and most of the epithelial and mesenchymal neoplasms were malignant. There was no difference between males and females regarding neoplasia prevalence. Labrador Retriever, Schnauzer, Teckel, mongrel, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, and Pit Bull were the most frequently affected breeds. Fila Brasileiro (aka Brazilian Mastiff), Pit Bull and Schnauzer had higher incidence of mesenchymal, epithelial, and round cells neoplasms, respectively. Inflammation was more commonly observed in the Labrador Retriever and other changes were more commonly in Teckel, Labrador Retriever, and mongrel dogs. Medium age and weight were 8.4 years and 28.5 kg, respectively. Medium diameter of the tumor-like lesions was 2.5 cm and the neoplastic lesions presented higher averages. Lesions were mainly in yellow-coated dogs. Incisional biopsy samples (56.4%) and amputations (85.3%) were mostly from neoplastic cases. Right forelimb was the most affected limb, and digits were the main injured anatomic structures. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most (14.2%) commonly diagnosed neoplasm, followed by mast cell tumor (7.6%), melanoma (7.6%), and undifferentiated sarcoma (7.6%). In half of the inflammatory cases, the lesion was centered in hair follicle and surrounding dermis. The inflammatory infiltrate was predominantly piogranulomatous or lymphoplasmacytic. Follicular cyst, calcinosis circumscripta, and acrochordons were the main non neoplastic and non-inflammatory changes
