Growth of Listeria Monocytogenes in ready to eat salads at different storage temperatures and valuation of virulence genes expression
BACKGROUND:
Vegetables are major components of a healthy and balanced diet. However, 25% of foodborne diseases are linked to the consumption of vegetables.
STUDY DESIGN:
The aim of this work was to assess the microbiological risks associated with consumption of ready to eat salads (RTE).
METHODS:
Microbiological challenge tests were carried out for the evaluation of the L. monocytogenes growth potential in RTE salads stored at different temperatures.
RESULTS:
The results indicate that L.monocytogenes was able to grow (δ ≥ 0.5) in all storage conditions considered at the end of shelf life. In order to evaluate the virulence role of L. monocytogenes, the temperature-dependent transcription of major virulence genes was also investigated by RT-PCR.
CONCLUSIONS:
The microbiological challenge test allowed us to confirm, as also demonstrated by other authors, that RTE salads are able to support the growth of L. monocytogenes strains (d δ≥ 0.5) stored under different temperatures
Analytical representation of architectural built heritage. A Sketch-to-Bim approach
HBIM methodology is increasingly used for the management of all aspects of architectural heritage, from survey and analysis to
conservation, management and restoration issues.
Application of HBIM are the so-called Scan-to-BIM processes in which the artifact is surveyed with digital techniques of laser
scanning and photogrammetry. These techniques result in point clouds, the basis of the subsequent process of informative and
geometric modelling of the artifact. The resulting "smart models" are composed of parametric objects rich in information that can be
easily updated at any time.
The proposed methodology aims at integrating a study of architectural orders, whose results become preparatory to the subsequent
phases of survey and modeling, to the classic Scan-to-BIM workflows. In particular, in the modeling these results have allowed a
more targeted choice of techniques used.
The method has been applied to the atrium of the former Jesuit College of Santa Croce in Cagliari, which today hosts one of the seats
of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Cagliari; in particular, the atrium of the east body of the former
Jesuit College, designed by the Piedmontese architect Antonio Felice De Vincenti, has been modelled
The newer opioid agonist treatment with lower substitutive opiate doses is associated with better toxicology outcome than the older harm reduction treatment
Background: Charge-free heroin use disorder treatment in Italy follows two main approaches, i.e., harm reduction treatment (HRT) strategy in community low-threshold facilities for drug addiction and opioid agonist treatment (OAT) in high-threshold facilities for opioid addiction, focusing on pharmacological maintenance according to the Dole and Nyswander strategy. We aimed to compare the impact of HRT and OAT on patient outcome, as assessed through negativity for drugs on about 1-year urinalyses. Methods: We examined retrospectively the urinalyses of HRT and OAT patients for which at least four randomly sampled urinalyses per month were available for about 1 year, during which patients were undergoing methadone or buprenorphine maintenance; urinalyses focused on heroin, cocaine, cannabinoids, and their metabolites. Results: Included were 189 HRT and 58 OAT patients. The latter were observed for a significantly longer period. There was a higher proportion of heroin- and cocaine-clean urinalyses in OAT patients, with cocaine-clean urinalyses discriminating best between the two groups. OAT patients were older, with longer dependence duration, more severe addiction history, and received lower methadone doses. Buprenorphine maintenance was more often associated with heroin-clean urinalyses. The higher the methadone doses, the lower were the percentage of heroin-clean urinalyses in HRT patients (negative correlation). Conclusions: The OAT approach was related to higher recovery and polyabuse abstinence rates compared to the HRT approach, despite greater severity of substance use, psychiatric and physical comorbidities. Our results are consistent with the possibility to use lower maintenance opiate doses (after induction and stabilization in methadone treatment according to Dole and Nyswander methodology) in treating heroin addiction. This seemed to be impossible adopting the currently accepted HRT model
Singling out the effect of quenched disorder in the phase diagram of cuprates
We investigate the specific influence of structural disorder on the
suppression of antiferromagnetic order and on the emergence of cuprate
superconductivity. We single out pure disorder, by focusing on a series of
YEuBaCuO samples at fixed oxygen content
, in the range . The gradual Y/Eu isovalent substitution
smoothly drives the system through the Mott-insulator to superconductor
transition from a full antiferromagnet with N\'eel transition K at
to a bulk superconductor with superconducting critical temperature
K at , YBaCuO. The electronic properties are
finely tuned by gradual lattice deformations induced by the different cationic
radii of the two lanthanides, inducing a continuous change of the basal Cu(1)-O
chain length, as well as a controlled amount of disorder in the active
Cu(2)O bilayers. We check that internal charge transfer from the basal to
the active plane is entirely responsible for the doping of the latter and we
show that superconductivity emerges with orthorhombicity. By comparing
transition temperatures with those of the isoelectronic clean system we
deterime the influence of pure structural disorder connected with the Y/Eu
alloy.Comment: 10 pages 11 figures, submitted to Journal of Physics: Condensed

Effect of external pressure on the magnetic properties of CoAsO ( = La, Pr, Sm): a SR study
We report on a detailed investigation of the itinerant ferromagnets LaCoAsO,
PrCoAsO and SmCoAsO performed by means of muon spin spectroscopy upon the
application of external hydrostatic pressures up to GPa. These
materials are shown to be magnetically hard in view of the weak dependence of
both critical temperatures and internal fields at the muon site on .
In the cases = La and Sm, the behaviour of the internal field is
substantially unaltered up to GPa. A much richer phenomenology is
detected in PrCoAsO instead, possibly associated with a strong dependence
of the statistical population of the two different crystallographic sites for
the muon. Surprisingly, results are notably different from what is observed in
the case of the isostructural compounds CoPO, where the full As/P
substitution is already inducing a strong chemical pressure within the lattice
but is still very effective in further affecting the magnetic properties.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

Protostellar Outflows at the EarliesT Stages (POETS). I. Radio thermal jets at high resolution nearby HO maser sources
Abridged. Methods. We made use of the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA)
in the B configuration at K band, and in the A configuration at both Ku and C
bands, in order to image the radio continuum emission towards 25 HO maser
sites with an angular resolution and thermal rms of the order of and 10
Jy beam, respectively. These targets add to our pilot study of 11
maser sites presented in Moscadelli et al. (2016). The sample of HO maser
sites was selected among those regions having an accurate distance measurement,
obtained through maser trigonometric parallaxes, and HO maser luminosities
in excess of 10 L. Results. We present high-resolution radio
continuum images of 33 sources belonging to 25 star-forming regions. In each
region, we detect radio continuum emission within a few 1000 au of the HO
masers' position; 50% of the radio continuum sources are associated with
bolometric luminosities exceeding 5 10 L, including
W33A and G240.320.07. We provide a detailed spectral index analysis for each
radio continuum source, based on the integrated fluxes at each frequency, and
produce spectral index maps with the multi-frequency-synthesis deconvolution
algorithm of CASA. The radio continuum emission traces thermal bremsstrahlung
in (proto)stellar winds and jets, with flux densities at 22 GHz below 3 mJy,
and spectral index values between and 1.3. We prove a strong correlation
(0.8) between the radio continuum luminosity (L) and the HO
maser luminosity (L) of (. Since HO masers are
excited through shocks driven by (proto)stellar winds and jets, these results
provide support to the idea that the radio continuum emission around young
stars is dominated by shock-ionization.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic
Analysis of Parametric Oscillatory Instability in Power Recycled LIGO Interferometer
We present the analysis of a nonlinear effect of parametric oscillatory
instability in power recycled LIGO interferometer with the Fabry-Perot (FP)
cavities in the arms. The basis for this effect is the excitation of the
additional (Stokes) optical mode and the mirror elastic mode, when the optical
energy stored in the main FP cavity main mode exceeds the certain threshold and
the frequencies are related so that sum of frequencies of Stokes and elastic
modes are approximately equal to frequencyof main mode. The presence of
anti-Stokes modes (with frequency approximately equal to sum of frequencies of
main and elastic modes) can depress parametric instability. However, it is very
likely that the anti-Stokes modes will not compensate the parametric
instability completely.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. submitted to Physics Letters
