Recent progress of coherent beam combining Kumgang Laser (0.4J@10kHz/10ns)

A coherent beam combining is the most promising technique to achieve a high output energy and a high repetition rate laser system with a good beam quality [1]. It has been demonstrated experimentally that the coherent beam combination using self-phase-controlled stimulated Brillouin scattering phase conjugate mirror (SC-SBS-PCM) is the simplest coherent beam combination method [2-3]. For an average output power of a kW range, the experimental verification of coherent beam combination is now underway by the Kumgang laser [4-5]..

The Ship Detection Using Airborne and In-situ Measurements Based on Hyperspectral Remote Sensing

International audienceMaritime accidents around the Korean Peninsula are increasing, and the ship detection research using remote sensing data is consequently becoming increasingly important. This study presented a new ship detection algorithm using hyperspectral images that provide the spectral information of several hundred channels in the ship detection field, which depends on high resolution optical imagery. We applied a spectral matching algorithm between the reflection spectrum of the ship deck obtained from two field observations and the ship and seawater spectrum of the hyperspectral sensor of an airborne visible/infrared imaging spectrometer. A total of five detection algorithms were used, namely spectral distance similarity (SDS), spectral correlation similarity (SCS), spectral similarity value (SSV), spectral angle mapper (SAM), and spectral information divergence (SID). SDS showed an error in the detection of seawater inside the ship, and SAM showed a clear classification result with a difference between ship and seawater of approximately 1.8 times. Additionally, the present study classified the vessels included in hyperspectral images by presenting the adaptive thresholds of each technique. As a result, SAM and SID showed superior ship detection abilities compared to those of other detection algorithms

Social Pressure-Induced Craving in Patients with Alcohol Dependence: Application of Virtual Reality to Coping Skill Training

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to assess the interaction between alcohol cues and social pressure in the induction of alcohol craving. METHODS: Fourteen male patients with alcohol dependence and 14 age-matched social drinkers completed a virtual reality coping skill training program composed of four blocks according to the presence of alcohol cues (x2) and social pressure (x2). Before and after each block, the craving levels were measured using a visual analogue scale. RESULTS: Patients with alcohol dependence reported extremely high levels of craving immediately upon exposure to a virtual environment with alcohol cues, regardless of social pressure. In contrast, the craving levels of social drinkers were influenced by social pressure from virtual avatars. CONCLUSION: Our findings imply that an alcohol cue-laden environment should interfere with the ability to use coping skills against social pressure in real-life situations.ope

Structural insights into the novel ARM-repeat protein CTNNBL1 and its association with the hPrp19-CDC5L complex

The hPrp19-CDC5L complex plays a crucial role during human pre-mRNA splicing by catalytic activation of the spliceosome. In order to elucidate the molecular architecture of the hPrp19-CDC5L complex, the crystal structure of CTNNBL1, one of the major components of this complex, was determined. Unlike canonical ARM-repeat proteins such as beta-catenin and importin-alpha, CTNNBL1 was found to contain a twisted and extended ARM-repeat structure at the C-terminal domain and, more importantly, the protein formed a stable dimer. A highly negatively charged patch formed in the N-terminal ARM-repeat domain of CTNNBL1 provides a binding site for CDC5L, a binding partner of the protein in the hPrp19-CDC5L complex, and these two proteins form a complex with a stoichiometry of 2:2. These findings not only present the crystal structure of a novel ARM-repeat protein, CTNNBL1, but also provide insights into the detailed molecular architecture of the hPrp19-CDC5L complex.open0

Heat map of TLR4-dependent gene expression changes induced by cotreatment with palmitate and mmLDL (A). J774 cells were stimulated with palmitate for 16h and incubated with or without mmLDL and LPS. Profiles of mRNA were determined by RNA-seq analysis (B-top). To validate RNA-seq results, independent real time PCRs were used to assess the expression of Ccr5, Il-6, Csf-3, Il-1β, and β–actin (B-bottom). The combination of palmitate and mmLDL caused an increase of mRNA expression of Il-6, Csf-3, and Il-1β genes (normalized to that of Actb). The real time PCR was conducted with technical duplicates, and the data shown represent three independent replicate experiments. *p <0.05 and **p <0.01 compared to LPS treatment without palmitate or mmLDL.</p

Crystal structure of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Rv2606c: A pyridoxal biosynthesis lyase

    No full text
Tuberculosis is a lethal infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We determined the crystal structure of Rv2606c, a potential pyridoxal biosynthesis lyase (PdxS), from M. tuberculosis H37Rv at 1.8Å resolution. The overall structure of the protein, composed of a (??/??)8-barrel and two small 310-helices, was quite similar to those of other PdxS proteins. A glycerol molecule was observed to be bound at the active site of the Rv2606c structure through interactions with the conserved residues of Asp29 and Lys86, providing information regarding the potential active site and the substrate-binding environment of the protein. The interface for Rv2606c dodecamerization, which is primarily mediated by salt bridges and hydrophobic interactions, was quite different from those of other PdxS proteins. Furthermore, we observed that the Rv2606c and Rv2604c form a stable complex, suggesting that these proteins might function as PdxS and PdxT in M. tuberculosis.close
